Alley Pavement Repair, TBM Naming Process, Tunnel Forum Information and Reminder about the installation of Tunnel Monitoring Equipment in First Street
Greeting First Street Tunnel Stakeholder:
This note is to alert you of four important actions that will take place over the next several days regarding the First Street Tunnel Project:
1) Alley Work: We will temporarily limit access to the alleyway immediately adjacent to the Adams Street NW CSA to “local traffic” only (See attached map for location details). The alleyway will be closed to all other traffic from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm from March 23 through March 27. This action is necessary to allow the FST construction team to make repairs to portions of the alley. Workers will remove and replace broken asphalt.
Directional signs will be posted to assist and to guide motorists to alternate entrances during daytime hours of work. If it becomes necessary, flaggers will also be employed to help with directing traffic. The alley will be restored nightly and will be completely open from 7PM-7AM.
2) TBM Naming: Our list of candidates for naming the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) has been pared down to three exceptional finalists and the TBM survey is ready to go. You can cast your vote at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/TBMName. The TBM will be named in honor of the finalist who receives the most votes. The winner will be announced at the Naming Ceremony on Tuesday, April 14. The finalists are:
Anna, in honor of Anna J. Cooper (1858-1964): The fourth African American woman to receive a doctoral degree, Cooper was an author, educator, feminist and scholar. Cooper lived in LeDroit Park and a traffic circle at Third and T streets NW is named for her.
Lucy, in honor of Lucy Diggs Slowe (1885-1937): Slowe was the first dean of women at Howard University and is a founding member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the first black Greek lettered sorority. In 1919, Slowe founded Shaw Junior High School, the first junior high school in the DC school system.
Mary, in honor of Mary Church Terrell (1863-1964): Terrell was one of the first African American women to receive a doctoral degree and was a founding member of the NAACP. She lived at 326 T Street NW, which is now a national historic landmark.
3) We will be changing the agenda for the upcoming March 26 Tunnel Forum Meeting to discuss “Construction Updates” and will reschedule the “Landscaping and Restoration of Disturbed Areas” for a later meeting
4) The FST Contractor, SKJD is currently installing instrumentation in the roadway along First Street. The work involves a Drill Rig about the size of a car, which will be moved north to south. We are currently working from W Street South to V Street. We expect to be in the area of V Street South to Rhode Island Avenue in the next few weeks. “No Parking” signs will be removed as soon as the work is done.
We appreciate your patience as we move closer to our completion date. As always, if you have any questions or would like more information, please call the FST Hotline (844) FST–INFO/ (844) 378-4636.
Regards,
Tom
