Councilmember McDuffie and Dignitaries Celebrate First Day of New G9 Bus Route on Rhode Island Avenue with Inaugural Ride

Washington, D.C. – On Monday, March 20, 2017, Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie (D-Ward 5) will join dignitaries, neighbors, and community leaders on an Inaugural Ride of the new G9 MetroExtra Bus Route. After a brief speaking program, the public is invited to board the bus and ride downtown with Councilmember McDuffie.

The new G9 MetroExtra Bus Route begins service after Councilmember McDuffie secured the funds to start the route in the fiscal year 2017 District of Columbia budget that the Council approved in June 2016. After the funds became available on October 1, 2016, the G9 route was then approved by the WMATA Finance and Revenue Committee, and the full Board of Directors in January.

This new bus route will – for the first time in memory – allow passengers to travel from one side of Ward 5 to the other along Rhode Island Avenue, without requiring a transfer. This new bus route will also help alleviate overcrowding on the current G8 line in Bloomingdale, Eckington, and Edgewood.

The G9 MetroExtra Bus Route is expected to carry approximately 1,100 passengers per day while serving the Ward 5 neighborhoods of Bloomingdale, Eckington, Edgewood, Brentwood, Brookland, Woodridge, and Langdon Park. The G9 will operate weekdays 6 - 9 AM, 3-7 PM.
