Council hearing and go-go performance TONIGHT to make go-go the official music of DC


Hearing on Councilmember McDuffie's Go-Go Official Music of the District of Columbia Designation Act of 2019 to be followed by a performance by Black Passion Experience Band


Washington, D.C. -- Today, Wednesday, October 30, 2019, the D.C. Council Committee of the Whole will hold a hearing on the Go-Go Official Music of the District of Columbia Designation Act of 2019 [B23-0317]. The legislation was introduced on June 4, 2019, led by Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie and co-introduced by every member of the D.C. Council.

  • HEARING START TIME: 4:00 pm
  • PERFORMANCE START TIME: 6:00 pm (approximate)
  • WHERE: John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
In addition to amending the official D.C. code to enshrine go-go music as a part of the fabric of the District, the legislation also requires the Mayor to design and implement a program to support, preserve, and archive go-go music and its related documents and recordings.

Immediately following the hearing, or at 6:00 PM, Black Passion Experience Band will perform in the first-floor atrium of the John A. Wilson Building.

The hearing will feature many go-go artists and leaders including:

  • Natalie Hopkinson, Author of Go-Go Live: The Musical Life and Death of a Chocolate City

  • Cam Poles, Manager, Black Alley Band
  • Tony Lewis, Jr., advocate for native Washingtonians, #DCorNothing
