bloomingdale farmers market/ EC-12

i've been away most of the month so i've been slow on the postings. what have i missed?


I saw this message from Stu Davenport, of Big Bear Cafe and ANC fame, concerning the Bloomingdale Farmers Market.



1. We have sent applications to farmers in the area of Gettysburg,
Richmond, and Middleburg, and we are working now on getting R street
closed once a week between 1st and Florida, NW. What was most
important a few weeks ago was to get community input from our surveys
on when the market should open, and then we could write the
applications stating the day the Farmers would show. Now that we have
such a strong response pushing for saturday as the market day, we can
work to get the permit from DDOT to close the street down. We can
then get formal commitment letters from the farmers so that things
will definitely start up in June...

2. In order to close the street down we need signatures from the
neighbors on R street, a letter of support from the ANC, and a traffic
control plan. We met with the ANC last week, and they will vote at the
next meeting to write the letter of support. We have also started
getting signatures from the residents on R by going door to door, and
we met with the head of DDOT who is walking us through thttp://www2.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifhe remainder
of the street closing process. I asked for a meeting with Sharlene
Reed, and when I meet with her on Wednesday I will ask her to help
draft the traffic control plan, and give basic information on DDOT
issues we have to be aware of.



The awaited news from Brian Brown about the firehouse on north capitol wasn't very telling. Basically, its still moving forward. they still expect the XM portion to happen. No ETA.

here is a list of NCMS accomplishments:

-Made substantial physical improvements to two previously neglected public parks on North Capitol Street, including purchasing and installing trees and wrought iron fencing at both parks

-Provided interior design assistance to Windows Café and Market, including selecting a contemporary and exciting color palette for the interior of the café, and decorating the café to create a warm and inviting atmosphere

- Awarded technical assistance services from ReStore DC-a economic improvement program in the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development-to assist NCMS, Inc. with work plan development, identifying funding opportunities, and developing a communications strategy

-Awarded a $4,500 grant from ANC 5C to fund the completion of the beautification of the two public parks on North Capitol Street


-Sponsored a grand opening celebration for a neighborhood retail business in October 2004, and issued a press release about the event. Ward Five Councilman Vincent Orange and over 70 neighborhood residents attended the grand opening celebration

Life in Mount Vernon Square made mention of this .

i'm sure they're nice on the inside and they look great for natrual light.While they are nicer than many new buildings being put up in our fair city do they really deserve an award of merit?

Saint Martins Zoning Variance Hearing.

st. Martin's Apartments Zoning Variance Hearing Tomorrow Night, Monday, 1/29/2007


Tomorrow night at 6:30 pm is the zoning hearing for the upzoning of the large lot in Eckington across from McKinley Tech from R-4 to R-5-B.

The zoning classifications are described here:

It is likely that no official decision will be made at the end of the hearing because there is some opposition towards the zoning variance request.

there has been a lot of discussion on the community boards and blogs about brick sidewalks. r street nw is getting them. s street nw just got them. r ne is supposed to get them. some residents are thrilled, others a bit smug. personally i love the brick sidewalks but am a bit indifferent about fighting to get them. i agree with many that our efforts might be put to better use. I wonder though about the budgetary lines and if getting brick sidewalks really means not getting something else.

i'd like to start a pro/con list about brick sidewalks. this is assuming the brick vs concrete argument. i know there are other choices too.
please comment with your points.

Pro's
1. very attractive.
2. allows water to reach root system of trees.
3. ease to repair
4. befitting of the old character/materials of the neighborhood.
5. the whole broken windows theory.



Con's
1. Money
2. hard to shovel snow
3. hard to clean
4. bad for the handicapped
5. bad for high heels
6. Spalting
7. roots can easily cause uneveness in sidewalk
9 provokes tension over "gentrification" and appearance over people argument.
10. would expel a lot of community effort to get them
11. upheaval time to do the work.
