Snowy alleys pose challenge for DC woman in wheelchair

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A local woman who relies on a wheelchair to get around has a difficult challenge— every time it snows.
D.C.'s Department of Public Works takes care of plowing the streets and residents shovel their sidewalks. But back alleys are ignored.
So when snow starts to fall, political consultant and event planner Melissa Ortiz is trapped.
"My dilemma is I can't leave my house. I can get in my backyard. But if the house were to catch on fire, I can't get in my alley," she said.

Neighbors shovel for woman using wheelchair

WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA9) -- A DC woman in a wheelchair is now able to get out of her home after WUSA9 reported on her being snowed in. Her only access in and out of her home is an alley which the Department of Public Works does not clear, which is a major concern for Melissa Ortiz.
