The Washington, DC Neighborhood Heritage Trails showcases Washington’s diverse neighborhoods for residents and visitors alike. A self-guided walking trail will be marked with poster-sized signs with text and pictures that tells our neighborhoods’ stories. A trail typically takes 90 minutes to walk, and begins and ends at a Metro station.
Please help us discover the most interesting historic events that happened here,
and the fascinating people who lived, played, and worked here.
Longtime residents, newcomers, and former residents are all encouraged and welcome to attend.
You can see Neighborhood Heritage Trails in Greater U St, Downtown, Southwest, Barracks Row, Shaw, Adams Morgan, Tenleytown, and Mount Pleasant. Trails are underway in Brightwood, Deanwood, Columbia Heights, Anacostia, Georgia Ave/Pleasant Plains and others.

Family Movie Night Season Coming to Florida Avenue Park
The District’s Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) brings "Fun Family Films Under The Stars,” to south Bloomingdale at Florida Avenue Park at 1st and Florida Avenue across from the great Big Bear Café. This movie festival offers residents of all ages and families of all sizes the opportunity to enjoy viewing free, family-oriented films in DPR’s outdoor settings. As in previous years, viewers are invited to bring their own snacks, chairs and blankets.
Movies will be shown from 8:45 pm to 11 pm.
At select locations throughout the summer, community members who arrive early enough for each screening will have the opportunity to place a vote between two movies that may be shown that evening. For example, one night, those attending the Columbia Heights Recreation Center screening were asked to choose between the 2005 comedy “Are We There Yet?” starring Nia Long and Ice Cube or the 2006 drama “Akeelah and the Bee” with Angela Bassett, Laurence Fishburne and Keke Palmer. The movie which receives the most votes will be shown.
So come on out this Sunday evening at 8:45 pm to Florida Avenue Park !
And come out next Thursday, the 24th when Family Movie Night comes to the Harry Thomas Rec Center on Lincoln Road NE.

Join us for a WEEDFEST THIS Saturday in Crispus Attucks Park. Your neighbors will be out in the Memory Garden, with backup from a professional landscaping team, with the goal of GETTING RID OF ALL THE WEEDS IN THE MEMORY GARDEN! Just imagine the transformation. Or better yet come see it for yourself and help make it happen.
It's going to be hot this weekend, so we're starting early -- 8:30am, and will probably go until at least Noon. We'll also make sure we have ways to stay cool, including cold drinks and maybe a makeshift misting station. And if we're still working at noon we can even order lunch.

The fireworks are done and the summer heat is here. Gas prices are up. The BFM offers local produce that is worth the walk. Ted says: If you want a real local treat pick up some Trickling Springs Dairy heavy cream from Timor Bodega, whip it up and flavor it with lemon zest and vanilla.
Then pick your choice of fresh berries or peaches from Reid's Orchard. Find a clear pint glass and build a cream and fruit parfait. Garnish with a sprig of mint from the 7th street garden. Ok that's desert now for the rest of a perfect summer meal..........
Start your prefect summer meal by not heating up your home with the stove or oven. Create a cool tasty salad from their great choice of salad greens and fresh herbs: lettuce, arugula, mesclun, purslane, radishes, and mint, oregano, sage, chives, basil. Then try some AppleWurst from Truck Patch Farm cooked on the grill..
Truck Patch: Try some Lemon verbena which makes a great herbal tea. Purslane. A pretty succulent also called Portulaca, it is filled to the tip of every little leaf with omega 3 fatty acids. It has a lemony flavor and a nice crunch which makes it the perfect salad veggie. Baby squash with their blossoms,

1/2 cup of fresh mint leaves (not the stems, they're bitter), rinsed, lightly packed (about 20 leaves)
1/2 cup of fresh lemon verbena leaves, rinsed, lightly packed (about 10-15 leaves)
2 cups of water
METHOD
Bring a pot of fresh water almost, but not quite to a boil. Put the mint and verbena leaves in a teapot. Pour the hot water over the leaves. Let sit for 3-5 minutes. Strain into tea cups.
Makes 2 cups.
Ice it down for a great summer refresher!

Reid: There will be buckets of dark sweet and sour cherries and they won't be in season much longer. Lots of berries -- red and black raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, currants, gooseberries. Methley sugar plums (purple and juicy), shiro plums(yellow and sweet) plums, tart Lodi sauce apples, white and yellow peaches. Herbs by popular demand- basil, cilantro, thyme, rosemary, oregano and lavender
Fruit Salad Tip: sprinkle a little sugar at the bottom of a bowl. Grind chopped basil and mint leaves into the sugar to a paste, then add your cut up fruit and sprinkle with lemon juice. The sugar-herb paste is wonderful and the lemon heightens the flavor of the summer berries and fruits. Try it!.
Add to your perfect summer meal with a wide choice of Garner veggies to grill or cut into salads.
Garner: Make a cucumber and yogurt salad with slices of their sweet onions and mint. Crush some garlic and it turns into a great relish for meat or beans. Grate the cucumbers . Add some crushed walnuts and thin it down with more yogurt and it is a cool, pretty cucumber soup. Grill corn on the cob and rub it with lime and cayenne pepper -- or butter. Or all three.
TIP: Slice up tomatoes and sprinkle them with salt, add some shredded basil leaves. Drizzle on the olive oil but hold the vinegar. The tomato juice makes the perfect vinaigrette. After you eat the slices, mop up that basil= infused juice with some Breadline bread. That's heaven.
Grill their peppers(green bell, king arthur, blushing beauty,lilac), sweet peppers(sweet bananas, yummy mix,)jalepeno peppers. Add some cubed cantaloupes and sugar babies watermelon to your fruit salad. Don't forget the okra and the potato salad.

The film will be shown outdoors at the intersection of Florida and New York Avenues, N.E. The site is located directly across Florida Avenue from the New York Avenue Metro station on the Red Line and the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) headquarters. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and walk, bike, or take Metro. Nearly 200 people attended the most recent film showing.
On July 10 and August 7, the BID has teamed with the Washington Area Bicyclist Association to sponsor Bike-In Movie Nights, with WABA volunteer bike valets parking filmgoers’ bikes for free. WABA also will have an information table with the latest edition of the DC Bike Map, a pocket guide to DC bike law, and safe cycling guides, and will offer special $25 discounted WABA memberships. WABA also is providing free bike racks for all the James Bond movie nights for the rest of the summer.
The James Bond Film Festival will be held each Thursday night through August 28, rain or shine, with each film showing preceded by an Odd-job and other Bond character look-alike contest. The film series will take place on the future site of MRP Realty’s Washington Gateway project, a one million square foot mixed-use project that will begin construction later this year. Cucumbers, new potatoes in shades of red,white,yellow (think Potato salad spiced up with their hot peppers), Valentino Green Beans, squash (yellow, zucchini, eightball, one-ball, sunburst, and whites squash), cabbages to make your holiday cole slaw and....bushels of small, sweet cantaloup.
They grow great corn. Brush thick slices of their eggplant with some olive oil, then slap them on the grill. When they are done, sprinkle them with some chopped fresh basil and oregano and a splash of balsamic vinegar. You can do the same thing with their summer squash
Add some sides of sliced tomatoes, julienned radishes with lime juice and cilantro.
Chef Ted plans to do more off- the -grill cooking demos. Last week was Truck Patch sausages and pork shoulder BBQ. This week will be everything veggie for those of you who swing that way....

Caitlin is going to have lots of Bing dark sweet cherries, Queen Anne blush sweet cherries, Spanish white cherries, and a nice supply of Sour Pie Cherries for everyone's pie & jam needs (the pie cherries tend to have a very short season). She'll also have apricots, their delicious yellow peaches (Rich May & Sweet Scarlet varieties), white peaches (Spring Snow), nectarines, blueberries, and red raspberries. Fruit salad time. And cobblers. Fruit cobblers are VERY easy to make:

Slice the fruit into a baking dish and sweeten it slightly. You can add warm spices such as cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg to either the fruit or the topping. Scatter the crumb mixture over the top and bake at 350 degrees until the topping is crisp and brown and the fruit is juicy and fragrant. (Thanks to Russ Parsons of the LA Times for this simple recipe!)
Breadline will have all the good bread you want to wrap around a sausage or grilled veggies or dip into ratatouille, rolls for hamburgers, muffins, cookies, loaves....

"We've had some pretty serious rainfall in recent weeks and the Bloomingdale Civic Association would like to know how neighbors fared. Please let us know if your home was affected by flooding or water seepage of any consequence that was NOT caused by something you could have controlled, i.e., clogged drains, damaged or missing drains or pipes. We will report these incidents to WASA and follow up to assure that they are doing all than can be done to control storm water run off in this neighborhood.

In the coming days the District of Columbia will be implementing new rules
and regulations regarding the Supreme Court decision in the District of
Columbia v. Heller (handgun) case. The Supreme Court ruled that residents
will be allowed to possess handguns in their homes. It is critical that all
Metropolitan Police Department members know the immediate impact of this
ruling:
* All Firearms including handguns must be registered with the
Metropolitan Police Department's Firearms Registration Section before they
may be legally possessed.
* Automatic and semi-automatic handguns remain ineligible for
registration.
* The Supreme Court's ruling is limited to handguns in the home and

disassembled or secured with a locking device (not a current legal

What Happens Now?
The Supreme Court will formally issue its mandate within the next month,
possibly as early as July 17, 2008. The U.S. Court of Appeals will then
send the case to the U.S. District Court to enter an injunction. The
injunction is the court order that will officially prevent the District
government from enforcing the handgun ban. That process may take a few
months. Within 21 days, the Metropolitan Police Department will promulgate
regulations to accommodate the process of registering handguns for lawful
possession.

Can people go out and get handguns right now?
If not, when will they be able to do it?
No. Residents may not go out and get handguns, though they will soon be
able to do so. There is further court action before the Supreme Court's
decision is implemented and the handgun ban is officially lifted, though
that should happen within the next few months. It should be emphasized that
even after the handgun ban is lifted, those who wish to possess handguns
will first be required to register them with the Metropolitan Police
Department, as they must do with all firearms, in order for the possession
to be legal. Furthermore, under the Supreme Court's decision, possession of
properly registered handguns will still be legal only in one's own home.

Yes, under District law that the Supreme Court did not disturb, someone who
seeks to register any firearm must meet certain requirements. Among these
are that the would-be registrant must be 21 years of age and cannot have
been convicted of a felony or other crime of violence or weapons crime, or
have been committed to a mental hospital within the past five years.
Registrants also must be fingerprinted and pass a test regarding knowledge
of District gun laws.

The new rules will allow handgun possession in the home only, and only by
those who properly register their handguns with the Metropolitan Police
Department. The Supreme Court has not altered the legality of carrying
handguns outside the home. Given the potentially tragic consequences of

What Happens Now?
The Supreme Court will formally issue its mandate within the next month,
possibly as early as July 17, 2008. The U.S. Court of Appeals will then
send the case to the U.S. District Court to enter an injunction. The
injunction is the court order that will officially prevent the District
government from enforcing the handgun ban. That process may take a few
months. Within 21 days, the Metropolitan Police Department will promulgate
regulations to accommodate the process of registering handguns for lawful
possession.

Can people go out and get handguns right now?
If not, when will they be able to do it?
No. Residents may not go out and get handguns, though they will soon be
able to do so. There is further court action before the Supreme Court's
decision is implemented and the handgun ban is officially lifted, though
that should happen within the next few months. It should be emphasized that
even after the handgun ban is lifted, those who wish to possess handguns
will first be required to register them with the Metropolitan Police
Department, as they must do with all firearms, in order for the possession
to be legal. Furthermore, under the Supreme Court's decision, possession of
properly registered handguns will still be legal only in one's own home.

Yes, under District law that the Supreme Court did not disturb, someone who
seeks to register any firearm must meet certain requirements. Among these
are that the would-be registrant must be 21 years of age and cannot have
been convicted of a felony or other crime of violence or weapons crime, or
have been committed to a mental hospital within the past five years.
Registrants also must be fingerprinted and pass a test regarding knowledge
of District gun laws.

The new rules will allow handgun possession in the home only, and only by
those who properly register their handguns with the Metropolitan Police
Department. The Supreme Court has not altered the legality of carrying
handguns outside the home. Given the potentially tragic consequences of
storing a firearm without a trigger lock, residents are strongly urged to
utilize such locks which may be obtained free of charge from the

The District government will establish an amnesty program under which they
can register their handguns without fear of prosecution for having possessed
