remembering Sylvester Randolph Burrows Sr.. father of Bloomingdale resident and ANC 5E Commissioner Wanda Foster

Date: Fri, 31 Jan 2014 11:36:51 -0500
Subject: Fwd: Remembering Sylvester Randolph Burrows Sr.
From: terijanine@gmail.com

Please share with neighbors the announcements below of the passing of Mr. Sylvester Burrows, father of Commissioner Wanda Foster and our Bloomingdale neighbor. Mr. Burrows was a life long Washingtonian and a well loved long time resident of the 100 block of Randolph Place, NW. He was also a member of the Bloomingdale Civic Association. Mr. Burrows and his wife could often be found "stoop sitting" on their block, in fact, they were stoop sitting the day they became the first Bloomingdale residents I met when I was deciding whether to buy my house. Mr. Burrows' presence and wisdom will be missed but his spirit will live on through his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

During this difficult time, if you have pressing neighborhood related concerns that would normally require a response from Commissioner Foster, please understand that she may require additional time to respond. You may also cc me or one of the other Bloomingdale Commissioners (Dianne Barnes and Mark Mueller) for assistance.

Best,

OF
SYLVESTER RANDOLPH BURROWS SR.
5/21/21 - 1/26/14
The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and He delights in his way.
(Psalm 37:23)

At 92 years of age, our faithful brother-in-Christ, Sylvester Burrows, peacefully transitioned from his earthly tabernacle to his Heavenly Home into the Divine Presence of his Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. Sylvester has lived a long and satisfying life as was promised in Psalm 91:16, "With long life did God satisfy him, and show him His salvation." At age 90, Sylvester was awarded in June 2012 with the Congressional Medal of Honor for the First African American U. S. Marine of Montfort Point.
Sylvester leaves to cherish their precious memories his loving wife Lynell Burrows and children. Psalm 127:3-5 reads, "Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, The fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one’s youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them;" Please keep the Burrows family lifted in prayer

Mat Bader: 2006 McMillan solicitation/RFP attachments‏

See this 01-30-2014 message from Bloomingdale resident Mat Bader:

Given all of the chatter recently about the solicitation and bid process surrounding McMillan, I went ahead and uploaded attachments to the solicitation. These are 24 documents from a companion CD-ROM which contain supplemental information on the McMillan Sand Filtration Site. These documents were to assist developers in responding to the solicitation and the District in selecting a Land Development partner for the project.

I have not yet read through all of the documents but, for those interested in community input, please see attachment 24: Summary of Recommendations for Site Revitalization February 1, 2001.   See pages 36, 39 and 40 for a list of conclusions and recommendations from the Office of Planning which follow multiple discussions between the community, councilmembers, technical advisors, District departments, consultants, and others.

Anyone can find the attachments on the MAG website.

McMillan indoor vertical agriculture

Daniel Goldon  Wolkoff  comments on Kojo Namdi show today on Development in DC and saving open space:

Kojo managed again to avoid any real discussion of the social justice, as well as city planning issues at McMillan, thanks a lot Kojo, consistently distoriting the public debate on McMillan.

We have a case here at McMillan of successive DC administrations who placed no value on our history, NO VALUE on the residents of an entire section of their city. Since 1986 the DC government fenced this land off, blocking peoples access to their needed outdoor recreation, with absolutely no concern for community health. Kojo, would this park be fenced off had it been located in Friendship Heights or Georgetown?

To understand the historic importance please read our  Office of Historic Preservation, Kim Williams',  excellent nomination for McMillan to the National Register of Historic Places
 (
http://www.nps.gov/nr/feature/places/13000022.htm ) .
You will quickly understand that McMillan is an amazing resource of NATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE, and that it is in surprisingly good condition. Ironically its preservation, is in the DC govternment's incompetent, ignorant hands, who is by law, charged with McMillans preservation not paving over. McMillan is a Registered DC and National Park Service Registered Historic Place,,, not an office park, or condo row.

Mayor Gray/VMP development plan at McMillan will demolish the 20 acres of underground water filtration galleries, and over-urbanize the site with 50 buildings , including 13 story condos. The community struggle to Save McMillan Park, preserving the Olmsted designed surface park and existing 20 acres underground, creates the exciting potential for Sustainable large scale "indoor agriculture" and Family Fish Network, and creative  food and other services. With proven vertical indoor growing technology we could convert the McMillan/Olmsted Park caverns to a fully functional, local food production facility , making it a truly sustainable site. Imagine superior organic fresh fruit, vegetables and Family Farmed Fish freshly produced right here in DC , no longer trucked from California, Florida and Mexico. Our food will be fresher, riper, pesticide free, and produced sustainably and we'll save energy, as thirty five percent of trucks on the road are transporting food!

Director Howland,

As I explained during our earlier conversation, I and my staff have received a number of complaints from Truxton Circle and Bloomingdale residents about trash pick-up. Specifically, DPW has not serviced those neighborhoods in two weeks. You are certainly aware of the potentially negative health and quality of life issues associated with overflowing trash cans. We need this matter resolved as quickly as possible.

I am in receipt of Mr. Twines email sent at 2:05 pm today. However, I would like you to advise me in writing, within the hour, of the specific plan you will implement to address this problem.

Thank you and I look forward to your speedy response to this matter.

Postmates delivers to Bloomingdale

Did you see this 12-22-2013 Washington Post article on Postmates?

I didn't see it, either.

I have copied in a few paragraphs from this article.  You can click on the link to read the entire story.

Note that the article mentions that it delivers to "parts of Bloomingdale."  I called Postmates in San Francisco for clarification.

I was advised that Postmates delivers west of North Capitol Street and north of Florida Avenue NW.

I am curious if anyone in Bloomingdale has used Postmates.

 This is the Postmates logo.

Postmates arrives in the District with a promise to deliver anything in under an hour

By Published: December 22

The only thing faster than the pace of innovation in the shipping industry is how quickly companies want to actually deliver items to your door.

Amazon.com began with free two-day shipping, then same-day service in certain markets and now dreams of delivery by flying drones. Other Internet companies, including Google and eBay, are also testing same-day delivery.

Postmates has carved out a niche by delivering orders from local restaurants and retailers to your home or office within an hour. It’s a business driven by consumers’ desire for instant gratification and efficiency, executives say.

“There is a radical reduction of time between saying you want something and receiving it, and it’s not just delivery, it’s a whole bunch of services,” founder Bastian Lehmann said.

Postmates debuted earlier this month in D.C., a city executives said is brimming with busy professionals who have ample money, but little time to spend it. The upstart began in San Francisco two years ago before expanding to Seattle and New York.

...

Postmates primarily serves Washington’s Northwest quadrant, with the exceptions of Capitol Hill, Southwest Waterfront, the National Mall and parts of Bloomingdale. The delivery fee ranges from $5.50 to $15.50 depending on the distance between sites.

Here is a current pic of the exterior:

Now read this message from a neighbor down the street:

I just learned the Melvin Brooks, the owner of Brooks Upholstery which used to be in the Unit block of Rhode Island Ave NW died this month. He and his wife were simply wonderful people. They would always invite my dog and I into their shop and give her treats. If he didn't have any treats for her, he would dig into his own lunch and find something to share. I was sorry to see them close up shop and have really missed them. They were a special part of the neighborhood.

Bloomingdale/LeDroit Park Residents:

DC Water is happy to announce our newly expanded Backwater Valve Rebate Program wherein eligible property owners who have not previously installed a backwater valve inside their home may now do so for a reimbursement amount of up to $6,000. Other property owners who have previously installed this device inside their home as part of our existing program and already received a rebate could be eligible for additional reimbursement which would automatically be mailed.

Similar to our existing program initiated in 2012, eligible property owners have already been identified and letters explaining the program are currently being mailed to them. For those property owners who have already received reimbursement under the existing program, additional rebate checks are also being mailed, so there is no need for any additional application procedures. Property owners who do not receive a program letter and want to know if their property is eligible may contact me directly at (202) 787-2003 or emanuel.briggs@dcwater.com. You may also contact me with any other questions pertaining to the Backwater Valve Rebate Program.

For more information on the expanded program, please see today’s Press Release at https://www.dcwater.com/news/listings/press_release629.cfm. This and other new information will soon be available on our Bloomingdale/LeDroit Park community web page, so please stay tuned.

Washington Times story on uncollected trash by DPW -- Bloomingdale referenced

By Andrea Noble - The Washington Times
Wednesday, January 29, 2014

A combination of a recent snowstorm and an outbreak of the flu has left trash piling up on D.C.
streets.

The District's Department of Public Works on Wednesday was battling to clear overflowing trash cans and debris from alleyways, with trash collectors expected to work into the evening most nights this week to catch up, a spokeswoman said.

"Yesterday, crews worked until 7 at night to try to get up as much as we could," DPW spokeswoman Linda Grant said. "We are making every effort to make rounds everywhere this week."

...

Ms. Grant couldn't say Wednesday whether certain parts of the city were suffering more than others from the delayed trash collections. Several residents took DPW to task on Twitter over the lack of collections, specifically in the Northwest D.C. neighborhood of Bloomingdale and portions of Petworth.

...

Wrote another, "Any chance of a recycling pick up on 4th St in Bloomingdale? It's been a couple weeks ."

Officials responded dutifully to each Twitter request, assuring residents that workers were doing their best.

Ms. Grant said the department hopes to make all the regularly scheduled rounds by the end of the week.
