Crispus Attucks Park act of vandalism on Monday, 07/04/2011

See this message from CACD Board member Molly Scott:

Between the hours of 1:00 and 10:00 a.m. on July 4th, vandals cut down the fence in Crispus Attucks Park that is in place to protect the new grass seed on the great lawn.

Please understand a few facts about the fence:

• It is in place to let the new grass in that area of the park take hold and become strong enough for activities. It is not in place to inconvenience anyone.

• Opening that area of the park before the appropriate time increases the chances that we will have to reseed again next year.

• The grass seed, fencing and landscaping contractor cost roughly $1,200 and was paid for by donations from area residents and Crispus Attacks Park board members. Those funds – and indeed all park support comes donations from your neighbors. We do not have a large store of funds to maintain the park.

This project, approved by the board, is a short-term inconvenience for the long-term good of the park. The goal is to have healthy grass with strong roots in that area for everyone to use for years going forward, as opposed to having to close the great lawn every spring for reseeding.

Please be patient with our progress as we try to make the park a better place for all residents. The fence has been replaced, and will remain in place for the rest of the summer. A police report has also been filed. The rest of the park remains open for your enjoyment. We want people to utilize the park respectfully – and we need the park to be able to stand up to the wear and tear from that use.

If you have any questions, please contact board@crispusattuckspark.org. We respect the views of our neighbors and will answer your questions and hear your concerns.

Thank you,
The Crispus Attucks Park Board

There is a plug for the upcoming Bloomingdale Community Day & Yard Sale on Saturday, May 21st.

I will agree with John Corea's assessment: "It`s more of a park now than it`s ever been before, so there`s more interest."

Thanks to everyone who helps keep the park thriving!

Crispus Attucks Park: best neighborhood achievement

Lydia DePillis at Housing Complex at the Washington City Paper likes Crispus Attucks Park!

Best Neighborhood Achievement
Crispus Attucks Park
http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/bestofdc/peopleandplaces/2011/best-neighborhood-achievement

Crispus Attucks Court NW Having a backyard is a wonderful thing, but it`s not a privilege enjoyed by all of D.C.`s rowhouse-dwellers; many back doors open out onto alleys. Which is why the long fight to make the plot of land between U, V, North Capitol and 1st Street NW into an Edenic 1.36-acre park is such a triumph. Only 15 years ago, the area was occupied by a burned-out old building that police had fenced off and padlocked to keep drug dealers and prostitutes out.

In 1998, the city foreclosed on the land — owned by the Crispus Attucks Development Corporation — galvanizing neighbors to get the foreclosure cancelled and make it into a tax-exempt park, in exchange for allowing community access in perpetuity.

Since then, the development corporation has been working on improvements, putting in trees and landscaping. And now, walking through the right alleys will lead you into this almost-secret garden, which on a sunny summer day will be filled with locals chatting and lounging on the grass. It`s like having access to your own backyard, and everybody else`s, at the same time. —Lydia DePillis

Urgent: Can you help us keep the annual Yard Sale alive?

From John Corea, Bloomingdale resident and President, Crispus Attucks Development Corporation:
Hello Friends of Crispus Attucks Park!

I hope you'll take just a second to send me a quick response to this email.

The planning committee for the big annual Community Yard Sale lost some key volunteers this year, and we're now seriously behind in our efforts to promote the event and sign up people who want to sell at this year's sale.

So we have 2 simple questions:

1) Are there volunteers out there who can help over the next 4 or 5 days (mainly delivering flyers), or on the day of the yard sale (Saturday May 22nd)?

2) Do you think you'd like to sell at this year's yard sale?

Please respond as soon as you can to jacorea
@gmail.com, or 202- 550-2631. If there is enough interest from both volunteers and potential sellers, then we'll be able to keep the neighborhood tradition alive for a 7th consecutive year. But if we don't hear from enough people by this Thursday or Friday, we'll have to cancel the event.

Please forward this to neighbors and friends who you think might be interested. To get the yard sale flyer or registration form, go to www.crispusattuckspark.org.

Thanks very much!

John
