hearty neighborhood participation in this past Saturday`s North Capitol Main Street 2012 annual meeting

North Capitol Main Street held its 2012 Annual Meeting -- its "Vision Sharing" session -- on Saturday, March 31, 2012 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon at St. Martin`s Catholic Church at T & North Capitol Street NW.

NCMS President Patricia Mitchell opened up the visioning session with an introduction of the board members and Camille Nixon of the DC Department of Small and Local Business Development. Pat then briefly reviewed the NCMS accomplishments for the past twelve months.

Three brief presentations followed by three projects chairs. Roxanne Wallace, head of the Storefront Improvement Program (SIP) project, spoke about the prior SIP program successes, how the SIP program works and issued a call for volunteers. Scott Roberts described the social & print media project, which includes maintaining the www.ncmsinc.org website. Sara Kaufman spoke on fellow NCMS board member Geovani Bonilla`s promotion and marketing project, "Center of the City".

The presentations then progressed into three break-out sessions by project. The break-out discussions garnered input from eager volunteers to advance each project`s goals.

Follow-up meetings for each project will be organized in order to continue with the spirited enthusiasm from the attendees.

North Capitol Main Street will continue to reach out to residents by offering volunteer opportunities to serve your community!

On behalf of the Board of Directors and all the wonderful volunteers of NCMS, Thank You for the tremendous turn-out at the 3rd Annual 2011 NCMS Art+Music Walk.

Each year, we learn something new about ourselves, about the event itself, about you as residents, about our businesses and about this great community of neighborhoods -- Bloomingdale, Eckington and Truxton Circle in Shaw. And this year is no exception.

I believe it's fair to say this year, we had the biggest turn-out ever. (at least in one place at one time) And we could not have done any of this without the support of Department of Small and Local Business Development, Pinkline Project and Rustik Tavern, and the participation of all the businesses in the North Capitol Main Street service area.

It goes without saying, the work of North Capitol Main Street is a labor of love (or at least self-interest) because all of its volunteers and board members -- Tom, Scott, Roxanne, Juli, Geovani, Sara, Diton, and Nathaniel -- are residents and business owners in the community. And so nothing is more gratifying than to see this community come together in such a positive and fun way. Were it not for the rain, I believe we'd still be partying on T Street.

And speaking of T Street NW -- a very special thank you goes out to the generous and gracious Residents of T Street NW for allowing the closure of your street for this event. We (the community) owe you a debt of gratitude. Finally, the members of the Clean Team, who altered their schedules to make sure the neighborhood was left clean, really do rock!! These guys do a tremendous job of keeping the trash off the streets and garbage removed, so please be sure to show them your appreciation whenever the spirit hits you. Thank you all.

Have you heard about the C.O.V.E Candidate Interviews? Who is C.O.V.E., you say? Well, first, C.O.V.E. is a community of neighborhood civic associations who came together to support the idea of having a forum for voters to engage in substantive dialogue with candidates that are running for public office in the District of Columbia.

Over the next several weeks you will have the opportunity to be a part of an interview with many of the leading and not-so-leading candidates for office. This is a critical election year and in today's economy, it's important to be engaged in the process to ensure the city is being governed by competent, committed public servants who understand who they work for.

The COVE interviews are not your typical political debate-style forums -- the gotcha' politics and reporting that is so common today. Instead, C.O.V.E. ... Get ready for the second annual 1st on First- Art + Music Walk 2010!

It's that time of year again... the dog days of summer will be upon us before we know it. But there's a light at the end of that long, hot, muggy tunnel--North Capitol Main Street is once again partnering up with The Pink Line Project to bring you our second annual Art+Music Walk on Saturday, August 7. (First Saturday) And we need YOU to make this event complete!

North Capitol Main Street is now recruiting First Street residents between R and Rhode Island NW, and we're looking for 15-25 houses. If you're willing to "host" a sculpture in your front yard from late July through the month of August, we'll cover the cost of insurance and The Pink Line Project will select and install the sculptures. All you need to do is admire "your new" art as you walk by... and be prepared for a bit more attention than you're used to.

Have you just finished some great landscaping out front or a maybe new paint job or is your front yard already the envy of the block? This is your chance to show it off--along with the work of a local artist!

Last year's Art + Music Walk attracted 400+ people from Bloomingdale and beyond, raising the visibility of the neighborhood and local businesses District-wide.

North Capitol Main Street Names Jonathan Taylor New Executive Director
New Management Capacity to Benefit Local Business Programs

Washington, DC - April 22, 2010 - North Capitol Main Street (www.ncmsinc.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to commercial revitalization along the North Capitol-area neighborhood business districts, has named Jonathan Taylor as its new Executive Director.

"With both a passion for the community and economic development and a proven ability to assist small and local businesses, Jonathon is uniquely qualified to lead the organization," said Pat Mitchell, North Capitol Main Street's Chair. "His talent and skills will be a tremendous asset in assisting us reach our mission and goals as an organization as well as getting projects off the drawing board."

Mr. Taylor brings over 23 years of community economic development experience to his new role, including several years with local and community based organizations. Most recently, Mr. Taylor for the last 10 ten years has been president of Kumase Development Group, Inc., a regional neighborhood economic development and real estate planning consulting company.

"I'm deeply honored to have been chosen to lead North Capitol Main Street through this exciting period in its history and I have a profound admiration for the organization and its accomplishments in its seven year history. I intend to build upon the groundwork established by the Board of Directors and committed community leaders," said Mr. Taylor.
