North Capitol Main Street Volunteer Success Stories . . .
A Shared Vision for 2012

Call me crazy, but I believe the desire to see thriving neighborhood-serving businesses -- restaurants, retail, personal service businesses, drycleaners, banks, etc -- is one that is shared by most of the residents within the North Capitol community and one that we can all support as an achievable outcome.

Over the years, NCMS has been lucky to be supported by volunteer residents and businesses who can visualize all of the above and more. Progress has been steady. Businesses are opening, getting spruced up, growing and becoming notable throughout the city for good service and good food.

Our job has been to create the climate for this to happen and this year we need your help in a big, big way to continue progress.

On Saturday, March 31st, from 10:00 am to 1:00 p.m., you'll have an opportunity to hear about what's on the menu for 2012 and how you can help us acheive some real, tangible results in your neighborhood this year .

Volunteers Enable Programs that Help Keep the Community Clean

Ever wonder about the guys in the blue uniforms that keep the streets clean, public trash bins emptied, the sidewalks swept and the graffiti removed? Say hello to the guys of the North Capitol Main Street Clean Team This program is paid for through the Dept of Small and Local Business Development and without NCMS, this program would not exist.


Some of you've asked: "Why don't they clean my street?" The answer is: The NCMS Clean Team

provides cleaning services to the No. Capitol-area neighborhood business corridors. (Even though they routinely clean out public trashcans that are overflowing with residential garbage and remove trash from private residences as well.)


And... their service doesn't stop there. During snow storms they shovel sidewalks; during the spring they plant and mulch; during the summer they rake and bag -- literally tons of trash over the years. They have even given hand to remove bulk trash for neighborhood businesses. So the next time you see one of the guys in blue, tell them what a great job they're doing. And do us all a favor -- put your trash in your own Super Can!


Volunteers Create Beautiful Neighborhoods

What a fantastic volunteer story this is. Tom Noll, creative landscape artist, less than two years in Bloomingdale, decides to adopt a park and go for it. Tom, we need your talent!


Volunteers Help Create a Sense of Place

There are three distinct neighborhoods within the NCMS service area -- Bloomingdale, Eckington, and the Bates Area/Truxton Circle. Wouldn't it be awesome if each neighborhood had its own distinctive brand, its own sense of place?

Diton: NCMS Art + Music Walk - grand finale featuring pig roast, craft beers, Flamenco music, pizza-eating contest

Join us this Saturday, August 6th between 12 pm and 6pm for the Third Annual Art Walk in DC`s North Capital Neighborhoods of Bloomingdale, Eckington and Truxton Circle. Featuring ``Pop-up`` art installations that will be in front lawns throughout the month of August, an Artist Village with unique crafts for sale, various venues with live music and much more, this year`s Art Walk is not to be missed. Sponsored by North Capital Main Street and the Pinkline Project, the mission is to bring the community together in an event for all ages to enjoy.

Some call it Block Party, some call it Grand Finale -- oh heck, call it whatever you want -- but we are closing the unit block of T Street NW for some lively music, a Pig Roast and craft brews. A 250 pound pig will be slowly smoked for 24 hours and served alongside roasted chicken, sausage, grilled vegetables and more in an all-inclusive buffet for $15 starting at 4pm. Great Lakes and Heavy Seas Breweries will represent with their awesome craft-brews on site with pints available for $5. A selection of red and white wines will be available for $5 a glass as well.

Come for the food and drink, stay for the entertainment. On stage there will be a lively Rumba Flamenco Band with dancer. In between sets, we`ll host a Pizza Eating Contest during which representation from Big Bear Cafe, Rustik Tavern, Boundary Stone, Solly`s Tavern and soon to open in Petworth, DC Reynolds Bar, will be in fierce competition to put down the most pizzas in our allotted time-span. Come support your local providers of food and drink as they put their skills to the test. And the best part of this, the Prince of Petworth himself will be hosting the contest wearing his ``Prince``ly attire. Oh yeah, we ordered the cape and crown. Maybe we can convince him to scarf down some pizzas as well.

Saturday, August 6 - and we need YOU!

Are you an artist that would like to exhibit your outdoor sculpture work or other installation for an entire month?

Are you a homeowner who would be interested in hosting a beautiful work of art in your front yard throughout August.

Art Walk & Music Festival
For the last 3 years, North Capitol Main Street, Inc. has presented the annual Music + Art Walk to showcase the neighborhoods of Eckington, Truxton Circle, and Bloomingdale, showcasing live music, great art, and fine foods from area restaurants.

This year, we have a goal of including twenty (20) artists and homes to display art, and there will be four stages set up to feature live performances during the kick-off celebration on Saturday, August 6.

Awesome Foundation D.C. Awards its 1st grant to Fab Lab.

NCMS Congratulates Fab Lab

Awesome Foundation D.C. chooses Fab Lab for its first grant. The Fab Lab program is part of the MIT's Center for Bits and Atoms (CBA), which "broadly explores how the content of information relates to its physical representation." Fab Labs are part of the maker movement, which celebrates the creative tinkering that has been part of the American character for centuries.

Phyllis Klein, who submitted the application for the winning grant, is currently operating a mobile Fab Lab on 14th Street NW. The Awesome Foundation grant will go to help activate a new bricks and mortar space on North Capitol Street, NW. Following is her successful application:

In the spirit of MIT's Fab Lab community outreach project, Fab Lab D.C. will create a high-tech, fabrication laboratory/community workshop in the heart of the nation's capital to advance creativity, innovation and collaborative projects. Fab Lab D.C. will serve and foster the creative community by providing access to digital fabrication technology, rapid prototyping, and the global Fab Lab network.

With a focus on life-long learning and emphasis on investigative teamwork, Fab Lab D.C. plans to provide a range of educational programs for people of all ages, including access to the international Fab Lab network and Fab Academy, which extend opportunities for information sharing, research and broader social impact.

Fab Lab is for local community members, life-long learners, inventors, entrepreneurs, creatives and professionals.

With its location within walking distance and in view of the U. S. Capitol Building, Fab Lab D.C. will also serve as a model for the nation's leaders in policy, government and industry to experience first hand Fab Lab's proven grassroots approach in developing technical education and literacy, promoting innovation, launching inventions and incubating new businesses.

Councilmember Thomas, in partnership with the Fifth Police District and North Capitol Main Street, Inc. (NCMS), will hold an emergency public safety meeting at 7 pm on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at the offices of NCMS.

The meeting is in response to the shooting death of Bill Mitchell, Jr. on Wednesday, January 19th. A vigil at the site of the shooting will be held at 6 pm, prior to the community meeting.

North Capitol Main Street Clean & Safe Team December 2010 report

The NCMS team collected 1,740 bags for the month - this equates to 26.1 tons of rubbish collected.

The team also treated the area with rocksalt around bus stops, handicap ramps and fire hydrants. They also shoveled as needed during the inclement weather.

Graffiti and Poster removals for the month totaled 37.

North Capitol Main Street November 2010 Clean Team report

The NCMS Clean team collected 1,670 bags for the month of November, this equates to 25.05 tons of rubbish collected. They also removed 101 Graffiti & Poster markings.

The team replanted the hanging baskets with winter combinations getting us ready for Winter & the Holidays.

The team also replanted the planters and installed additional (Planters provided by NCMS) three planters with winter combinations.
