See this comment from a long-time resident of 1st Street NW, following the announcement from Bloomingdale resident Paul Vivari regarding the plans for the Showtime bar/coffeeshop at 113 Rhode Island Avenue NW, in the location of the former Showtime Salon:
Just read the current Bloomingdale listserv newsletter and am concerned about potential concentration of bars as startups along Rhode Island and First NW.
Although residents are encouraged at the prospect of business revitalizing Bloomingdale, perhaps residents would like to offer suggestions about the kinds of businesses we need--and perhaps the last thing some residents might want is a bar on each corner and the traffic it would bring to First Street NW.
Certainly Rustik and Boundary Stone are welcome additions, but residents may oppose becoming the new ``U Street.``

2011 was a fabulous year. We’ve seen our little neighborhood become even more of a place with a distinct, local, friendly feel. We at Rustik have had a phenomenal year, and we are so proud and happy to have been serving Bloomingdale. We are looking forward to the great things to come in 2012.
We have a few announcements.
We have a few announcements.
First, we are going to start serving lunch Tuesdays through Fridays from 11am to 3pm. If you’re working from home, why not work from here? Bring your computer and use our free wifi while you enjoy a tasty selection of lunch items, including our house-made Focaccia daily sandwich specials or the open-faced gyro sandwiches, among other items.
Second, movies. This month we are featuring some fantastic French films that span the eclectic cinematic feats of the pentagon shaped country – from the artsy, to the criminal to the comedic.
We’ll begin tomorrow, Tuesday 1/3, with Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, known simply as Amélie. Here, Amelie, an innocent and naive girl in Paris, with her own sense of justice, decides to help those around her and along the way, discovers love. This is the iconic French film of the early 2000’s that catapulted young Audrey Tautou and her pixie cut to notoriety.
On Tuesday, 1/10, we’ll be playing La Femme Nikita, directed by Luc Besson (Leon: The Professional, The Fifth Element). In this hit-man twist, convicted felon Nikita, instead of going to jail, is given a new identity and trained, stylishly, as a top secret spy/assassin.
The Dinner Game (Le Diner de Cons), 1/17, is a beguiling French farce in which Pierre and his friends organize a weekly dinner for idiots. Each man invites the dumbest guy he can find as a guest. Pierre thinks his champ -François Pignon- will steal the show.
On Tuesday, 1/24, we will play The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie). A surrealist film directed by Luis Buñuel, the movie’s world is not logical: the bizarre events are accepted by the characters, even if they are impossible or contradictory. The film concerns a group of upper class people attempting — despite continual interruptions — to dine together. Winner of an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (1972).
We’ll finish January with an action, clever, funny, and very sexy French spy thriller starring the great Jean-Paul Belmondo, The Professional. The story goes: French secret agent Joss Baumont is sent to one of the African countries to kill their president Njala. However, at the last moment the political situation changes and the French secret service turns him in to the African authorities, and he is sentenced to a long-term imprisonment. After the daring escape he returns to France and deliberately informs his former chiefs of his presence promising them to kill Njala who has just arrived to the country with the official visit.

Diton: NCMS Art + Music Walk - grand finale featuring pig roast, craft beers, Flamenco music, pizza-eating contest

Join us this Saturday, August 6th between 12 pm and 6pm for the Third Annual Art Walk in DC`s North Capital Neighborhoods of Bloomingdale, Eckington and Truxton Circle. Featuring ``Pop-up`` art installations that will be in front lawns throughout the month of August, an Artist Village with unique crafts for sale, various venues with live music and much more, this year`s Art Walk is not to be missed. Sponsored by North Capital Main Street and the Pinkline Project, the mission is to bring the community together in an event for all ages to enjoy.
Some call it Block Party, some call it Grand Finale -- oh heck, call it whatever you want -- but we are closing the unit block of T Street NW for some lively music, a Pig Roast and craft brews. A 250 pound pig will be slowly smoked for 24 hours and served alongside roasted chicken, sausage, grilled vegetables and more in an all-inclusive buffet for $15 starting at 4pm. Great Lakes and Heavy Seas Breweries will represent with their awesome craft-brews on site with pints available for $5. A selection of red and white wines will be available for $5 a glass as well.
Come for the food and drink, stay for the entertainment. On stage there will be a lively Rumba Flamenco Band with dancer. In between sets, we`ll host a Pizza Eating Contest during which representation from Big Bear Cafe, Rustik Tavern, Boundary Stone, Solly`s Tavern and soon to open in Petworth, DC Reynolds Bar, will be in fierce competition to put down the most pizzas in our allotted time-span. Come support your local providers of food and drink as they put their skills to the test. And the best part of this, the Prince of Petworth himself will be hosting the contest wearing his ``Prince``ly attire. Oh yeah, we ordered the cape and crown. Maybe we can convince him to scarf down some pizzas as well.
If all this doesn`t sound like fun to you, we don`t know what does.

Rustik Tavern seeking witty, droll, clever quotations pertaining to Bloomingdale, Rustik or bars in general for Rustik apparel

We`re in the process of finally getting some apparel (t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc) to offer for sale to our customers. We don`t necessarily want to have the generic, regular shirts.... we want to make them a bit witty and personalized.
If anybody would like to submit witty, droll, clever quotations pertaining to Bloomingdale, Rustik, DC or bars in general, we would love to get some input. For any quotation that we use on a t-shirt, we`ll offer a $30 gift certificate to whomever submitted it.
It`s a neighborhood tavern, after all, and we wouldn`t be where we are without our regulars, and their input is very valuable to us.
We`d like to get the quotations by Friday if possible.

Neighbors, This past weekend the Bloomingdale Civic Association hosted its annual Clean Up Day. The BCA Beautification Committee Chair, Dennis Anderson, and the rest of the committee did an incredible job organizing this year`s event. On behalf of the BCA, I would like to extend a huge thank you to the neighbors who participated. I would also like to express our appreciation to the following businesses and organizations for their support: Big Bear Cafe, City Cleaners, DPW, North Capitol Main Street; The Clean Team, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Rustik Tavern and Dennis Anderson`s construction company (unfortunately, I do not have the proper name of Dennis` business).

In light of the two recent fires in our neighborhood in about as many months, our treasurer, Michael Fine, had a great idea of asking our local fire department to attend the civic association meeting to discuss fire safety. Michael also suggested that we find someone to provide advice regarding what kind insurance coverage homeowners and renters should have to protect themselves and their belongings in the event of a fire. While we expect to have someone from the fire department in attendance, we have not had any luck securing an insurance expert. Please email me (terijanine @ gmail.com) if you (or someone you know) is qualified and available to provide this type of guidance at our meeting this Monday. We are not looking for a sales pitch, but rather a few tips on things we should look for in our policies to make sure we have the appropriate coverage. a comment on Capitol Food Mart's pursuit of a liquor license

I read Bloomingdale Civic Association President Teri Janine Quinn’s helpful explanation for how to protest a Liquor License Application and I understand Commissioner Hugh Youngblood will provide an update on Capitol Food Mart’s Liquor License pursuit at tonight’s ANC 5C meeting. I am eager to hear what can be done. Admittedly, I was late to read TJ’s post, so I did not organize a group of 5 people to submit a protest in time. I regret that. I am stunned by the fact that neighbors do not need to be consulted when a business applies for a liquor license and wonder what on earth our neighborhood is going to do with another place to buy alcohol. I live on Quincy Place NW and I see every day the negative impact the innumerable liquor stores have on our neighborhood, including last night when a drunk aggressive male followed me home. I was a patron at Rustik. The drunk male entered Rustik, went straight to the bar and started yelling. The Rustik Tavern staff asked him to leave and he did. It was at the same time that I left Rustik to walk home. . He saw me leave and decided that I was his next target. He followed me from Rustik Tavern at 8pm screaming at and harassing me the entire way along 1st Street NW. I felt him on my heels, picked up my pace to a jog, called 911, and stayed on with the operator until I got back to my apartment. When I looked out my window, I saw him causing a scene in front of Sunset Liquors, likely his final destination. I am not sure if the cops ever picked him up. I know this guy was an exception, not a rule… and alcohol is a symptom not a cause, but after eight years living in Bloomingdale seeing the slow but monumental improvements we’ve made to our wonderful neighborhood, I cannot find words to express the frustration I felt reading about our neighborhood’s powerlessness in protesting another liquor license. Is it not up to us to define the kind of place we’d like to live in?

I know, the opening of Bloomingdale`s first sit-down restaurant, Rustik, is practically old news by now; the place first opened its doors in late September. But how can I claim to be a true neighborhood correspondent without mentioning the new establishment? Plus, I was personally curious, so I stopped in on a recent sunny afternoon and chatted with owner Diton Pashaj about how things are going.
Pashaj must`ve taken media lessons from his counterpart Stu Davenport, owner of Big Bear Café, down the street: both are circumsaect and humble to a fault when it comes to talking about their businesses. But Pashaj finally admitted with a smile that things are going well. ``We`re happy,`` he said when I asked if the restaurant is busy. ``I wouldn`t say it`s crowded, but we have business every night.``
Most of the restaurant`s early Glitches have been worked out, and he and chef Seth Brady are starting to brainstorm about moving forward ~ maybe expanding the menu, offering brunch with an Albanian flavor (Pashaj hails from Albania), or hosting special evening events.
For now, though, it`s all up in the air. ``We`ll see what the community wants,`` he said cautiously. I got there around 5 p.m. and things were just getting humming: bartenders were starting to stock the shelves, a couple of cooks were standing by the big wood-fired oven, and manager types were milling around. Of his 15 employees, Pashaj says that 90 percent live in the neighborhood ~ and that includes both him and Brady.
It`s definitely a ``think local`` kind of place. Pashaj is planning on adding a tap for DC Brau, a soon-to-beonline local brewery that`s co-owned by a Bloomingdale resident, and he`s uber-friendly with his neighbors, one of whom breezed in while I was sitting at the bar. ``I love it! I come every chance I get,`` said Karen Cotton, of Rustik. When the kids` learning center she`s developing next door finally opens, she figures the restaurant can serve as a parents` waiting room. If all goes according to plan, though, Rustik won`t be the neighborhood`s only restaurant for long.
Another group of Bloomingdale residents ~ Gareth and Matt Croke, and Colin McDonough ~ are moving forward with plans for Boundary Stone, a restaurant/pub just down the street. They expect the place to open sometime around April, as soon as construction is finished and approvals are in place.
Is Pashaj worried about looming competition? Not at all, he said. ``I can`t wait for Boundary Stone to open. When I`m done working, I want to go drink somewhere that`s not my place.``

City officials will be celebrating the arrival of the first sit-down restaurant in the Bloomingdale neighborhood of D.C. Thursday evening, at a grand opening event for Rustik Tavern.
Though the event is tonight, the tavern opened to the public back in late September at 84 T St. NW. I haven`t gotten the chance to go there yet, but have heard enthusiastic things from friends in the neighborhood who have been longing for a place to hang out after hours.
The tavern serves a mix of pizza and small plates, as well as beer and wine. Have you been to Rustik yet? What are your thoughts?

NCMS Storefront Improvement Program continues! We have already reported on the Storefront Improvement Program (SIP) improvements made to the exterior of China Dragon, located next door to Windows Café & Market.
By now, you've noticed the recent improvements to the exterior of Bloomingdale Wine & Spirits - new exterior paint color and the installation of new black awnings. Quite an improvement, yes?
Next up is Jam Doung Style, 1726 North Capitol Street NW, Jamaican & American food carryout. Jam Doung is slated to get spruced up with new paint, awnings and trim. All of the businesses in the SIP program have NCMS branding signs in their front windows, advising patrons of their participation in the SIP program.
In addition, more businesses are inquring about the Storefront Improvement Program with Resident Architect, Roxanne Wallace, NCMS board member and Design Committee Chair. Roxanne's leading the organization in assisting other businesses interested in design assistance. Be on the lookout for more improvement.
SIP business participants will be joining us as we commemorate with a Grand Opening celebration for their newest neighbor, Rustik Tavern, on Thursday October 14, 2010 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Grand Opening Event limited to the First 200 RSVPs -- all taken at this point.
