Bloomingdale’s The Unified Scene Theater And Its Co-founder, Kathy Baird Westfall, Featured In Forbes Magazine
Bloomingdale’s The
Unified Scene Theater and its co-founder, Kathy
Baird Westfall, were recently profiled by Forbes magazine,
where Kathy spoke about the intersection between her improv comedy background
and her digital advertising career at Ogilvy
& Mather. Discussing how the principles behind improv comedy help shape
better leaders — principles which inform both the classes we teach at the
theater and the on-site events we provide through the theater’s sister company, Commedia
Partners, LLC — Kathy said: "[A]bout 6 years ago I signed up for
an improv comedy class. I was sold after the first hour, and I’ve been active
ever since....During an intensive leadership training I went through as part of
my job, I sensed that what they were actually teaching was improv. I call it
Leadership as Improvisation, Improvisation as leadership....Essentially, we
teach the benefits of improv and translate that to the professional environment
– teamwork, listening, creative collaboration, building trust, 'going off
script,' and frankly just being a better human. I truly believe that I’m good
at what I do, and even better at what I do now because of my background in
theater, especially improv.”
