WaPo Going Out Guide: "Wicked Bloom has created the best deviled eggs in Washington"

Below is a Going Out Guide review of the deviled eggs at newly opened Wicked Bloom DC at North Capitol & Florida Avenue NW.  Click on the link to read the entire article.

Note that there will be a North Capitol Main Street #SmallBusinessSaturday ribbon-cutting event at Wicked Bloom today at 3:30 pm:  Come join!

Wicked Bloom is owned and operated by the same people behind DCity Smokehouse around the corner at 8 Florida Avenue NW.

Wicked Bloom has created the best deviled eggs inWashington

Deviled eggs are the perfect picnic food: If you can boil water, you can make deviled eggs. A number of D.C. restaurants and bars put their own spin on the dish, but none is as transcendent as the Bacon and Eggs at Wicked Bloom Social Club in Bloomingdale.

Bacon and Eggs is genius in its simplicity: Two hard-boiled eggs, sliced in half, and filled with a creamy yolk mixture that involves plenty of paprika. What takes them to the stratosphere is that each egg is topped with a piece of pork belly prepared by pitmaster Rob Sonderman, the man behind DCity Smokehouse.

Correction: The eggs are topped with pork belly. This post originally said brisket, but it's delicious, delicious pork belly.

How Amazon's Strategies Affect Black Friday

Now that Thanksgiving is over, and Black Friday is here, we can stop being thankful and get out there and buy stuff! But seriously, you should still be thankful.

I know many people enjoy fighting crowds and hunting for bargains after Turkey Day. Personally, I'd rather watch a marathon of sappy Christmas movies on the Hallmark Channel. Note: Heidi, this statement in no way means I want to watch movies on Hallmark all day!

I prefer to do almost all of my shopping online at Jeff Bezos and his employees have made it incredibly easy (too easy!) to buy nearly anything and have it delivered to your home or office - sometimes the same day. has an interesting article about how Amazon's strategies affect not only Black Friday sales, but online shopping in general.

These boxes arrive at our house way too often.

Gratitude (and the Pumpkin Pie Paradox)

We just celebrated Thanksgiving, which means it's a good time to write about the link between being grateful and being happy. I believe most of us know focusing on good things makes us feel better than focusing on bad things. Unfortunately, its easy to forget to be grateful as we go through our daily routine.

New York Times columnist Arthur C. Brooks recently wrote a column about gratitude and happiness. It's a good reminder to be grateful for the little things in life.

Bonus: Brooks coins the phrase "Pumpkin Pie Paradox", when people begin to crave sweets after expressing gratitude. There's a scientific basis for why we eat pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving!

I'm grateful for Ilsa falling asleep on me after Thanksgiving dinner.

DDOT: "Have a Guest? Get a Visitor Parking Pass"

From: DC Government []
Sent: Wednesday, November 25, 2015 4:46 PM
Have a Guest? Get a Visitor Parking Pass

Guests of District Residents Need Temporary Permits to Park Vehicles
The District's Visitor Parking Pass (VPP) Program allows guests of eligible District residents to park for more than two hours on residential parking permit zone blocks.

Passes for 2015 expire December 31, 2015. Registration for 2016 Passes begins Tuesday, December 1, 2015. Passes are free, and one per household is available for residents on eligible
Residential Permit Parking (RPP) zone blocks in Wards 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, as well as ANC 2F.

Residents may register for the 2016 VPP at or by calling (202) 671-2700. Temporary Visitor Parking Permits (15-day) can also be obtained at a Metropolitan Police Department station in the ward in which the resident resides.
A VPP does not waive the requirement to register a vehicle in the District after 30 days of establishing residency or seeking Resident Out-of-State Auto exemption. Each pass is tracked and
assigned a unique address identifier with a Quick Reference (QR) code to help minimize fraud and misuse. Residents who live on a commercial zone block are not eligible and neither are those
with non-residential address types.

For more information, go to or call (202) 671-2700.

Work will include facade repairs, a new storefront, new windows and doors, a new roof deck and a green roof. Residential construction will involve new partitions, plumbing, light fixtures, appliances and finishes. Brick Lane acquired the property — which includes 8, 10 and 12 Florida Ave. NW and 1542 North Capitol St. NW — in September 2014 for $1.4 million. Work is expected to begin in early January and take less than a year. The building will be branded The Truxton, said Erik Kudla, a Brick Lane co-founder.
