Bloomingdale front steps -- open/metal vs. closed/brick -- what do YOU think ?

There have been some Bloomingdale rowhouse renovations that have included the conversion of the existing front steps -- brick steps that are "closed" and do not allow natural sunlight through -- to wrought iron steps that * are * open to natural sunlight and air.

What do YOU think ?

Here is an example:

Here is 1733 1st St NW with the existing front steps constructed of brick.

Here is the rowhouse next door -- 1735 1st Street NW -- that has been converted to two condominium units.  The front steps have been converted from brick to iron.

Subject: Save the Date: McMillan Park Fundraiser Party at 410 GoodBuddy Gallery - Thurs, 27 Mar 2014
From: hyoungblood@gmail.com

Please publish the following announcement to tomorrow's edition of the listserv and to the blog.

Thank you

Friends of McMillan Park is thrilled to announce a new date and venue for the Save McMillan Park fundraiser cocktail party.
The event will take place on the evening of Thursday, March 27, 2014. Please save the date for this fun-filled affair hosted by our friends at 410 GoodBuddy Gallery located on the border of the Bloomingdale and Shaw neighborhoods at 410 Florida Avenue NW, Washington, DC. The proceeds from this major event will benefit the Save McMillan Park Legal Fund to preserve our community’s historic and important green space.
The evening will include food and drinks from local businesses, talented local artists, presentations from preservation and legal experts, and raffle prizes! Additional details coming soon.
McMillan Park Reservoir Historic District is currently endangered by commercial development that would destroy the park’s majestic underground caverns. Until WWII, the space was used by the DC community at large as a central park for recreation, cultural events, and gathering.
Friends of McMillan Park was founded by community supporters and neighbors who have fought tirelessly to protect McMillan Park since 1989. Our mission is to preserve, restore, and transform historic McMillan Park for the benefit of the public.
Please let us know if you, your business, or your associates would like to join our event Host Committee at the $250 level. Contributions are tax-deductible thanks to our 501(c)3 fiscal sponsor, National Association for Olmsted Parks.

General admission tickets are $100. All proceeds benefit the Save McMillan Park Legal Fund.
For additional information, please contact Kirby Vining at (202) 234-0427(202) 234-0427 or restoremcmillan@gmail.com.

Hey Bloomingdale!!!

As you may know, Vicky Leonard of Flagler Place and I are running for positions on the DC Democratic State Committee. We are proud to be a part of THE RENT IS TOO  DARN HIGH slate. I hope you will come out to our campaign kick off event at Dahlak (1771 U St NW) this Thursday. Our slate is made up of small business owners, community organizers, policy advocates, artists and more from all over DC. We believe the Democratic party can do and be better.

Please join us as we kick off our campaign for  an open, honest and engaged Democratic party and a higher standard of accountability and ethics for our elected officials. We are the largest slate of candidates on the primary ballot for the DC Democratic State Committee.

We hope you can make it to Dahlak and talk with us and our fellow slate members.  And we'd very much appreciate any support you can show our effort by making a donation or volunteering your time (passing out flyers on your block would be great!).

Our slate came together knowing that our party can do and be better and that an important step was to get more DC residents involved. Come to Dahlak on Thursday the 27th at 6:00 PM (1771 U St NW) to meet the candidates, hear what they stand for, tell us what you want, and find out how YOU can join the effort.
Look forward to seeing you,
John
P.S.  Feel free to call or e-mail me if you have any questions or want more information.

tonight: DC Water Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project environmental assessment public meeting at McKinley Tech

Date: Mon, 17 Feb 2014 19:07:55 +0000

Greetings DC Water Stakeholder:

DC Water invites you to attend an upcoming public meeting on February 27, 2014 to learn more about an exciting project touching your neighborhood-the Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project. The primary purpose of this 5-mile long, 23-feet diameter tunnel will be to help convey combined sewer overflows away from local water ways and also provide flood relief to chronic flood areas in the Northeast Boundary area of the District. This is a follow up to our public meeting and open house held on October 17, 2013 during which we shared information on the NEBT project and, most importantly, sought to receive public comments on the project for inclusion in the Environmental Assessment (EA) for the project preceding its construction.

Since the first public meeting, DC Water has completed the EA and would now like to share its contents with you and get your feedback. The meeting information is as follows:

DC Water Public Meeting on the Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project Environmental Assessment
Thursday, February 27, 2014
6:30pm – 8:30pm
McKinley Technology High School
151 T Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002

Similar to the first meeting, DC Water is employing a number of media and outreach tools to help get the word out, including robo calls, mailed meeting flyers, print ads, social media, neighborhood listserves, media advisory, update of the NEBT project web page, and hard copies of the final EA made available at local libraries, community centers, schools and churches (full list of EA locations can be seen on the attached flyer). In addition, we ask that you please help us spread the word about the project, EA and public meeting by posting the information to your respective websites, listserves and blogs, etc. The NEBT will significantly mitigate flooding and improve the health of our local water ways. We would like the opportunity to discuss these and other environmental benefits of the project with you in greater detail at the meeting.

Ultimately, we understand that conflicting schedules may not allow you to attend the meeting. If you are unavailable, there are other ways in which you may both review the EA and submit comments. As mentioned above, hard copies will be made available for review at area locations beginning Friday, February 21, 2014. You may also view and download the EA directly from the NEBT project web page at http://www.dcwater.com/NortheastBoundaryTunnelEA. You may submit your comments on the EA through the project web page; email your comments to dccleanrivers@dcwater.com; or mail comments to DC Clean Rivers Project (Attn: NEBT), DC Water and Sewer Authority, 5000 Overlook Avenue, SW, Washington, DC 20032.

Please be advised that there is a 45-day window in which you will need to submit your comments to guarantee inclusion in the final EA-from Monday, February 17, 2014 to Wednesday, April 2, 2014. Please don’t miss the opportunity to have your voice count!

For more information or for individuals requiring special assistance at the meeting, please contact Clean Rivers Community Outreach at (202) 787-4447 or by email at dccleanrivers@dcwater.com.

Thanks much for your time, and we hope to see you at the meeting!
