con artists.

neighbors have been telling stories of a con artists claiming to be from Tulsa. call the police if you come across him.

a message from MPDC,

5D Community,

AS SPRING ARRIVES, MPDC WARNS RESIDENTSTO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR CON ARTISTS

While spring means the blooming of the cherry blossoms and other plants, it can also bring out con artists and other criminals seeking to profit from unsuspecting victims. Some of the most common cons and swindles this time of year are bogus home repair offers, fraudulent door-to-door charities, and individuals posing as police officers or bank investigators who claim to be investigating fraudulent tellers or counterfeit schemes. DC residents are urged to be wary of any "something-for- nothing" offers. Always ask for offers in writing, read over all contracts before you sign, and never agree to "cash-only" deals. Do not hesitate to check the credentials of anyone who comes to your door. Ask to see official identification and inspect it carefully. Legitimate organizations - especially real police officers - will not hesitate to comply. And if you have been victimized by a con artist, please call the police and report it. This is the only way that law enforcement can detect patterns and identify and apprehend offenders.

NoMa BID, Cultural Tourism DC Host

Walking Tour of NoMa, Saturday, April 26

“From the Beatles to XM Radio: The Evolution of NoMa” is the subject of Cultural Tourism DC’s free neighborhood walking tour of the NoMa (North of Massachusetts Avenue) neighborhood of Washington, D.C. on Saturday, April 26 from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. Led by Elizabeth Price, President of the NoMa Business Improvement District, the tour will meet at the New York Avenue Metro station’s M Street exit.

NoMa -- the up-and-coming neighborhood just north of Union Station -- is home to such landmarks as the Washington Coliseum (now known as the Uline Arena), site of the Beatles’ first US concert in 1967. The New York Avenue Metro station opened in 2004, igniting the pace of development in NoMa. With lead anchors like XM Radio, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and NPR, a new mixed-use neighborhood is taking shape.

The tour will highlight Uline Arena, a former coal yard, the historic C&P Telephone Company Warehouse, St. Aloysius Church and Gonzaga High School, and the former Woodies Warehouse as well as remnants of the old Swampoodle neighborhood, Emily Beale estate, and Tiber Creek. In addition, tour attendees will receive an overview of the latest redevelopment plans for the area.

Four things to do tomorrow

1. Eckington - 100 Years of Capital Traction- a walking tour

Meet outside Florida Avenue exit of New York Avenue Metro Station (Red Line), in front of the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) HQ at the corner of N and 2nd Streets, NE. Tour Ends at the Rhode Island Metro Station (Red Line)

Once a tranquil country estate north of Boundary Road, this neighborhood tells the story of Washington's first electric streetcar and maps the expansion of the city along the famous and well worn tracks along the Metropolitan Branch of the B&O Railroad. Visit the former estate of Joseph Gales, Jr., mayor of Washington and publisher of the National Intelligencer and discover neighborhood architectural styles from late Victorian row houses to industrial warehouses.

Led by Brian Kraft and presented by the DC Preservation League (www.dcpreservation.org) and the Eckington Civic Association.

old engine company 12 to become 2020 Martini

Dear Friends of Crispus Attucks Park,

PARK WORK DAY ON SATURDAY, 4/19/2008, STARTING AT 10AM

Creating the dog-free and dog-friendly zones will require a lot of work, on top of all the work that Mother Nature has already created for us (weeding, mowing, mulching...). Come out to the park on Saturday to pitch in -- it should be a beautiful warm day. For an hour, or all day, whatever you can manage. If you think you can make it, it would be helpful if you e-mailed me at jacorea @ gmail.com so I can get a sense of how many tools etc we need. Thanks!

Introducing, Bloomingdale

Bloomingdale is on my mind. I am especially wondering what can be done to help N. Capital Street. I think we would all love to see improvement: a yoga studio, a bistro, a hardware store.... the question is HOW?

I started asking a lot of questions. Can neighborhood investors gather together to invest (with dollars and/or sense) in helping to improve N. Capital Street? My questions led me to wander around our blocks and introduce myself to some of the business owners, particularly in the block of N. Capital between Quincy and R St:

  • The liquor store on R and N. Capital NE has a constant stream of business. The owner of the liquor store lives above it with his wife. He also owns the building next door which had been for sale a few years ago. He has taken that property off the market because he has decided to develop it into condos...maybe a restaurant. He was very uncertain...and it sort of made me think there may not really be a plan. Perhaps he would be interested in selling?
  • The laundry next-door was vacant and no one was able to give me an answer on its status...it would certainly make a great pizza place. Too bad we can’t talk the owners of Moroni Brothers (on Georgia in Petworth) into opening a second spot....or could we?
  • The Flea Market is owned by a couple and has been for four years. They have a fabulous spot.
  • and then there is the Firehouse. Sigh. What is happening to this lovely building?
  • SAVEMORE has been evicted....would make a fabulous deli/butcher shop.

In addition to wandering the blocks, I also met an investor who has restored/developed several homes and apartment buildings in the area: 20 R Street, NW; 314 V Street, NE to name two. We walked around the neighborhood together and I told him my ideas with the hope that he would say ‘wow...those are fabulous ideas, and I will underwrite them all’.

He did not say that. BUT, he is very interested in the neighborhood. He has a building which he is interested in, and wondered if the neighbors really would like to invest. My sense is that he has the capital to invest on his own...but I think if we, as neighbors, could have a hand in the investment, it might help in the creation of something really unique. What do you think? Are you interested? How are you interested?

What next? Do you know of anyone who might like to walk around the neighborhood with an idea to investing? Do you know anyone at FedEx or XM Radio who could introduce us to the community relations group?

Think about it. I will also keep thinking about it.

Survey about the Future of the Gage-Eckington Elementary School

See this 4/15/2008 message from ANC 5C04 Commissioner John Salatti:

Many people in the area know, but just as many do not know, that, as part of the District's school closure program, one of our neighborhood schools, Gage-Eckington Elementary School at 3rd and Elm Streets NW will be closing at the end of this school year. The LeDroit Park Civic Association has taken the lead on coming up with a plan for the short- and long-term future uses of the building and grounds. Along with my ANC colleagues, Myla Moss and Margot Hoerrner, I am a part of a LDPCA working group. We have been discussing a number of great and exciting ideas, but to really create the best plan that reflects the needs of this area and that best serves the entire community, we need to hear from you.

To facilitate getting that feedback, we have drafted a survey and are circulating it widely. For example, in LeDroit Park, Howard University students who live at Slowe Hall on 3rd Street NW are collaborating with residents and going door-to-door with the survey. In another example, I attended one of Commissioner Hoerrner's monthly meetings at Kelly Miller homes this week where as part of the meeting, she distributed copies of the survey and assisted residents there in filling it out. In addition, I have given a copy of the survey to the Bloomingdale Civic Association and the BCA may be distributing paper copies of it as well. But we are also using electronic means to give you easy access to the survey.

Here is a link to the survey on-line:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=E6RKz0TmHxz8uQmKiXJgRA_3d_3d

Please go to the link and fill out the survey. We need to hear from you and need to hear soon, preferably this week. Within the next 30 days, the city will likely be making decisions about the future of many of the closing schools. Having a clear plan ready to present to the Mayor and other District officials will increase the likelihood that we as residents can determine what will happen at Gage-Eckington.

Together, we can transform the unfortunate closing of this neighborhood institution into the opening of needed new services and opportunities for this area. So make your views known!

I look forward to hearing from you. If you have any questions about this process, please drop me an e-mail, and I will get you an answer.

Have a great day,
John

Big Bear Cafe APRIL 17 @ 8 PM

See this message from Joe Hall:

Hey Bloomingdale--

CHERYL'S GONE HOSTS WAVE BOOKS POETS & ACOUSTIC/PUNK SINGER-SONGWRITER SEAN McARDLE
APRIL 17 @ 8 PM
BIG BEAR CAFE / 1st & R NW
COST = FREE

WAVE Books (www.wavepoetry.com) is an innovative press that has done things like send their poets on a national tour on a bus, which, for poetry, is unusual. Which, also, I'm in favor of. The poets:

Dorothea Lasky-Author of AWE & The Hatmaker's Wife & the Editor of the Katalanche Press chapbook series. Bookslut on AWE: "[like] walking home from a bar in your static-inducing hat, and then getting in the soft and dirty sheets of your bed to warm up. The poems feel just like someone you know -- glamorous only by virtue of illustrating the spiritual struggle that exists within the quotidian." Also, check out www.birdinsnow.com for video of Dorothea giving her Tiny AWE booktour from her very packed house.

Dara Wier-Man, her book Reverse Rapture is sort of like putting all the apocalyptic dread and beauty of The Road in a language blender. It's tremendous and big. Oh, also she's a Guggenheim Grant, Pushcart Prize Recipient, and author of several other books.

Caroline Knox-Look, her new book is called Quaker Guns. Words describing it: madcap, fierce. The title alone should get you through the door.

As for Sean McArdle, he'll be giving an acoustic set. The Washington Post says it best: "Sean McArdle makes folky, gentle music so queer and quirky it can only be labeled 'indie.'"

This event is going to be so nasty good, I'm sad to say it's the last one I'll be hosting. Hope to see you there!

Cheers,

Joe

This is kinda funny. some enterprising bloomingalian drinker sent in a message to Joe Englert in this Washingtonian interview requesting suugesting he take a look our way.

sadly, he brushed us off. thanks for trying

i tried to invoke mr englert a ways back.

and almost three years ago now

we're still looking.

and wow, i just reread the comments HERE its really worth a look at Mr. Englerts take on things.

art spaces and developers in brooklyn

one can easily say that brooklyn, is a much hotter real estate market and a more dynamic area than DC. Sure Brooklyn is way bigger than DC and part of one of the larges economic city-states in the world, so that type of market is expected.

Whats not expected is that artists can find studios at $6.82 per square foot a year.
$6.82!!!! thats amazing. i had moved my studio out to Mount Rainier, Maryland for the allure of 10.00.

Last i checked that ground floor store front at 3rd and Rhode Island was going for 30-ish.
The difference is staggering.

So why did i bring up brooklyn and this rent? read here to see why these artists are getting that deal
.
Imagine a developer in DC savvy enough to pull that off. Imagine people with means that truly embrave the Arts as Catalyst model.

transit ideas, development

BeyondDC has some great posts about transit and urban planning and all that fun rock n roll the kids listen to.

Target

am i the only one thats not that excited about Target in Columbia Heights?

i've hit the one in Potomac Yards, the one in College Park, the one in Hyattsville. i dont avoid target, but i'm also happy to go the few blocks to national wholesale liquidators. i'm just a bit non plussed by Target. i've got plenty of plastic stuff as it is.

thats not to say i'm not happy that DC is on the radar of stores, i just figure theres lots of stuff nearby, and i'd much prefer different things than more of the same, but slighty closer. hopefully it'll keep buckets of tax money in the district and that money will fix the schools, and add to transit infrastructure. and get more police coverage.

and maybe a city funded arts center.

anyway, i'm not meaning to be down on target, i'm sure i'll go there eventually, but i'm just a bit tired of reading about how people dont have to go to the "suburbs" to buy affordable t-shirts. there are places, they just don't have Michael Graves toasters.
