groundbreaking rehearsal

apparently the large construction equipment i saw playing around in the lot next to the giant in brentwood last week were preparing for a groundbreaking today.

54,000 square feet of retail is to be added between giant and the rhode island avenue metro.

The new retailers include: AJ Wright, Downtown Locker Room, Rainbow Women Clothing, Footlocker, Anna's Linens, America's Best Optical, Radio Shack and Citi-bank.

There will be a press conference/photo op with Vincent Orange, but you could have guessed that.

While i'm not sure if i will be hitting up on any of these stores i do hope the citi-bank diffuses the ridiculous overcrowding at bank of america. while im thinking about, why did they not put a drive through teller window instead of a drive up atm???? you almost always have to get out of your car and walk to the OTHER ATM to get deposit envelopes anyway.

one more thing, why no bookstore up at the brentwood shopping center. or a gym? or a office supply store, or........

They could have done so much better, as is it doesn't add much benefit from my perspective.

• Office Supplies
• Coffee House
• Department Store (Target/K-Mart/Walmart)
• Bookstore
• Gym

I am waiting for someone to open a Cluck U Chicken.... Sorry, that isnt helpful.

I do wish that someone would start adding some sit-down restaurants in our hood. Going to Pizza Mart, McDs, Popeyes and KFC just dont cut it.

Cant wait for the firestation to open.

If I only had the capital I would open a bookstore in the area (6 years of bookstore experience/management under my belt)....While I don't want to clog up your comments with my large opinions on the list of stores to come (in a word: junkity-junk-junk), I did want to note that as far as I know there's still talk of bringing a Target or Costco to the Ft. Lincoln/New Town area. But if the new development looks a mess like the Home Depot/Giant layout (the first time I saw it I thought it was an urban wasteland), then I really see no overall benefit to the community.

i'm still under the assumption that the costco is coming to fort lincoln too. i didnt know about the target.

Orange may need that for the election!

and yeah, i'm not too thrilled about the stores coming in, and that whole shopping center is poorly designed and isolated from the neighborhood.

also, i think there is already a Rainbow womens clothing store across the street, so i guess that one will be closed.

Can you think of any African American neighborhood (especially low income) that supports a bookstore?

Demographically this area is ghetto, and national retailers will react accordingly.

If you think this is bad, wait until you see what goes in at the McMillan site!

anon,

If there were a bookstore there, it would be the closest bookstore for 4 universities and 3 hospitals. Thats sayin something for the demographics.

What do you think will go on at old sand filtration site?

I can't believe I moved to Eckington. I thought the area was changing for the better. I just bought a brand new condo here before I heard they were building all of these ghetto stores. Why not build a Best Buy, Borders, Barnes & Nobles, or something other than a store that sells cheap/ghetto crap. If I wanted any of this cheap/ghetto crap I can go to PG Plaza or Iverson Mall...
