bloomingdale, north capitol, first street, and nearby recently

-well, despite the negative words about NWL, i scored some great stuff quite cheaply today. the place is still open if you're in need of junk for your house, or the VHS of OZ or Babar. or Spawn III

-Theres a new Dry Cleaners on North Capitol.
Apple Cleaner & Alteration
202-232-3636
1410 North Capitol
M-F: 7:30 - 6:30
Sat 8:30-5

-The old Savemore has had extensive work done on the inside.
anyone know whats going on?

-I havent seen any progress on Martini 2020.

- whats going on with the place on north cap at r nw? wasnt it supposed to be a stereo place?

- Seems the video store on North Cap has clothing too. i havent been in but theres clothes in the window.

-five guys is open way over in NoMa

-the building that will have the harris teeter over at first and m is moving along quickly.

- the lot at florida and north cap is all fenced off still.

- the old pizza place ( the formstone building) on north cap and florida is all fixed up

- the yoga studio is up and running, but whats going in next door?

- Baraki? any news or progress? i heard the alcohol licence was approved but missed all the details. the last few months have been pretty hectic for me.

- that said, thanks for coming out to the bloomingdale holiday market! i was trying to plan a concurrent show at 87 florida, but i just didnt have the time. maybe next year.

- theres a for sale sign on the ice place on florida. its a huge lot and space and its street frontage sucks right now, but damn, i hate seeing that kind of stuff. we've still got plenty of empty buildings. and i've gotten kegs and ice there before and i prolly will again.

-i see that rhode island avenue is slated to be getting bus improvements. Something they're calling Metro Extra. personally, i'd love to see the 98 bus go all the way down florida avenue to the Atlas. Speaking of Metro, they now have an online Next Train service . what happened to Next Bus? i used that frequently.

-I'm pretty certain that the mcmillan development will make traffic along first street pretty crazy. too bad they couldnt include a Millennium Wheel, or balloon rides, or some other cool attraction that isnt a ritas water ice or maggie moo's. not that i wouldn't frequent either.

- i recently noticed on my house title that my property sits on Ray E. Middaugh's subdivision. thought that was kinda interesting. seems that dude also developed a lot of parcels in Woodley Park.

anything else going on or that you're thinking about in the area?

Open Houses in and around Bloomingdale this week and more!

'Tis the weekend before Christmas, so the Open House list is short, but here it is.

Here's the "and more":
There are numerous signs on vacant properties around the city, with several in the immediate area, announcing the January 30th, 2009 auction of more than 30 properties. Here's what is currently on the list. I will post more information as it becomes available.

Don't miss the last Cheryl's Gone of 2008...

December 18, 8pm
Eric Pankey, Theodora Danylevich, William Bert, Stripmall Ballads

Eric Pankey is the author of eight collections of poetry. His poetry, essays, and revi ews have appeared in Antaeus, The Antioch Review, The Gettysburg Review, Grand Street, The Iowa Review, The Kenyon Review, New Republic, The New Yorker, The Quarterly, Shenandoah, and many others publications. Winner of the Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets, Pankey has received numerous grants supporting his work, including fellowships from the Ingram Merrill Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. His newest book of poetry is THE PEAR AS ONE EXAMPLE: New and Selected Poems (Ausable Press).

Theodora Danylevich is a Washington DC poet who will read from her homophonic translations of Beowulf: "A side project for a few years now, this is a translation based on sound (not meaning) and free association, with intuitive, political and scandalous underpinnings. At one point Beowulf was GW Bush and Shields was Rove... not sure if this project has wrapped itself around HOPE yet... lol... there might need to be a different source text for that one..."

William Bert received an MFA in Fiction from the University of Arizona's Creative Writing Program in 2007. His work has appeared in Colorado Review, pacificREVIEW, Sonora Review, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He is a founding board member and Executive Secretary of Capitol Letters Writing Center, a Washington, DC youth writing center. He is at work on a novel.

Stripmall Ballads play literate, itinerant bluesy-folky goodness – think Utah Phillips, Woody Guthrie, and David Dondero – and are frequent participants in the monthly DC Banjo Insanity Collective.

Bloomingdale-The Book!

As you may have heard, Bloomingdale neighbor Rosemarie Onwukwe is working on the Bloomingdale Neighborhood book for Arcadia Publishing. She is still in need of images to include.

Please keep in mind that in addition to the history of the area, she is also interested in current photos showing life in Bloomingdale! Do you have any photos of hanging out at Big Bear, the Farmer's Market, or even just sitting out on the front stoop?

Also, if you have any neighbors who have been in the area for several years and may not be aware of announcements like this that have been posted on line, please put them in touch (you can e-mail me at my screen name at yahoo.)

Time is running out and Rosemarie needs images as soon as possible. Unfortunately, submitted images must be in print form, rather than digital. (Digital images could be sent for initial review with printing done once they are selected for inclusion.)

National Wholesale Liquidators

Seems that the National Wholesale Liquidators on Rhode Island is closing.

they recently expanded into the basement level... that place is huge!
i wonder what will happen there.

District Demolishes Temple Courts Housing Complex

(Washington, DC) – Mayor Adrian M. Fenty on Monday joined the District of Columbia Housing Authority to begin the demolition of Temple Courts, a long-troubled housing complex north of Union Station that will be transformed into part of the new $700 million mixed- income Northwest One New Community.

“We will not tolerate substandard housing in the District,” Mayor Fenty. “Our residents deserve safe and healthy neighborhoods and that is exactly what we are working toward here at Northwest One.”

The District bought Temple Courts in 2007 for $16.5 million. For years, the residential tower and adjacent low-rises had been plagued by high crime and its residents were not afforded the kind of educational, health care or job opportunities they deserved. Immediately after closing on the purchase of the property, at the request of the residents, the District helped relocate 172 families to new housing around the city.

By early 2010, the District and its development partners, the William C. Smith Cos. and the Jair Lynch Cos. expect to break ground on a the first phase of a $700 million mixed-income, mixed-use community that will eventually include almost 1,600 new units of housing, 200,000 square feet of office space, 40,000 square feet of retail space and a one-acre park. At least 570 units will be reserved as affordable units for buyers and renters. Every family who left Temple Courts will have an opportunity to return to the new community after the project is finished.

The Northwest One project will be built along both sides of North Capitol Street. The site is bounded by K Street to the south, New Jersey Avenue to the west and New York Avenue to the North.

Within the Northwest One neighborhood, the District is currently building the $47 million Walker Jones complex. It will include a 100,000 square foot K-8 school; a 20,000 square foot community recreation center; a 5,000 square foot library and new athletic fields and playgrounds. The project is expected to be complete in time for the start of the 2009-2010 school year.

Crossing Florida

i got this email and wanted to pass it along:

Crossing Florida Avenue at R street on one's bicycle usually requires some Jackie Chan-style stunt work. Many cars do not obey the meager pedestrian cross walk that is meant to alert drivers to heavy non-auto traffic at this intersection. In response to recent inquiries about options to raise drivers' awareness and caution at Florida and R, DC Bike Program Specialist Mike Goodno wrote a very speedy, informative and friendly note detailing new construction the city is considering to enhance safety at Florida and R. He also mentioned that concerns would be forwarded to other city officials.

Perhaps to speed the resolution of this neighborhood issue (or to learn more about it), other similarly concerned Bloomingdalers could email Mike Goodno, yaknow, just to show some community solidarity on this issue (assuming it exists and you too do not want to die). Since Mike's response was prompt and great, hopefully everyone will share their thoughts and questions with him in a constructive and friendly manner. His email is: mike.goodno@dc.gov which is publicly available at http://ddot.dc.gov/bike

car crash at north capitol and r street.

moments after i crossed the intersection of north capitol and r street tonight there was a crazy car crash. Apparently a Lincoln ran a light and smashed into another car causing it to flip over, just as the P6 was entering the intersection.

Luckily the P6 was able to stop. I don't know if anyone was hurt.

Its crazy how many people ignore the lights on north capitol.
The light at Quincy might as well be invisible.

eckington, bloomingdale - wednesday is trash day

Trash/Recycling Changes Begins Dec. 1; See Map for Details

The DC Department of Public Works announced today that about 45,000 households with once-a-week trash and recycling collections will have a new collection day as of December 1, 2008. The new collection schedule grows out of the need to streamline the collections process and will allow more efficient use of resources, including fuel. Residents in Wards 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, with once-a-week collection service, will be affected. Starting Saturday, November 8, DPW employees will post signs along the streets where the collections schedules are changing to alert residents to their new collections day.

“The District’s population has grown and shifted across neighborhoods since our last re-routing occurred more than 50 years ago,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr. “We need to rebalance workloads among collections crews. This is the culmination of our re-routing program that began last year in Wards 1 and 2 where twice-a-week collections occur. Altogether, the re-routing affects about one-half of the 110,000 households with DPW trash and recycling collections services.”

Howland noted that in addition to the street signs, residents will receive a doorknocker, in English and Spanish that also will tell them their new collection day. “Many residents have had the same trash and recycling collection day all their lives,” said Howland, “so we are coming to their neighborhoods with the signs and doorknockers to make sure they know their new day.”

He added the following points:

  • Trash and recycling containers should be placed at the point of collection between 8 pm the day before the collection day and no later than 6 am of the collection day. The containers should be removed from public space by 8 pm of the collection day.
  • The re-routing will involve collections staff being assigned to new routes, so residents may see different DPW employees handling their collections.
  • For questions, residents should call 311.
  • Residents can visit http://dpw.dc.gov after November 14 to see if their street will be affected by the change.

DPW has a number of Maps and Schedules available for the public. New documents will be added periodically. Feel free to download and use any of the documents on this page.

Residential Street Sweeping Ends Friday, November 28

Residential Street Sweeping Ends Friday, November 28

Weekly Residential Street Sweeping Ends Friday, November 28

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) announced today that weekly
(signed), residential mechanical street cleaning will end for the season
Friday, November 28, 2008. "No parking/street cleaning" restrictions will be
lifted and motorists may park along posted, alternate-side, daytime street
sweeping routes without being required to move their cars on street-cleaning
days.

Residential street sweeping is suspended for public safety concerns during
the winter. Trucks used to clean the streets emit a fine spray of water to
keep dust down as they sweep. When the temperature drops to freezing or
below, sweeping is discontinued to prevent freezing and accidents to
vehicles and pedestrians.

Overnight sweeping scheduled for the District's major roadways, which
include Pennsylvania, Georgia, Constitution, and Independence avenues, will
take place as usual all winter, weather conditions permitting. Motorists are
urged not to park in these areas during the posted overnight sweeping hours.

By suspending the street sweeping program, DPW personnel will focus on leaf
collection, which began November 3, and the upcoming snow removal season.
Residents and business owners will be notified when street sweeping resumes
again in the spring of 2009.

Rhode Island Avenue NE/Great Streets Strategic Development Plan

Passing this along:

All,

As many of you now know, development of the Rhode Island Avenue NE/Great Streets Strategic Development Plan is underway. The plan will provide recommendations, among others, about how to use the land along Rhode Island Avenue to capture a portion of the $1 billion in retail sales revenues (and jobs) lost each year to other jurisdictions.

Moving forward, it is important to know more about the relationship residents, businesses and property owners have with Rhode Island Avenue. One of the ways to do that is by survey. A confidential and voluntary survey is available online until November 30, 2008. The survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete. In December, a summary of the survey results will be available to the public.

Here is the link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=65teB4MEBR2ZyyPJNm8Juw_3d_3d

Please note that only one survey response is allowed per computer. If there is more than one user for a computer and you need an additional survey please contact me at steve @ collabstrat.com. I can send an additional survey to you electronically, by fax or post.

Thank you for your involvement in this important effort.

Should you have questions about the project, please contact Derrick Lanardo Woody, Coordinator-Great Streets Initiative, Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development at derrick.woody@dc.gov or (202) 727-2981.

Best regards,

Steve

farmers market

Hi BFM fans:

Just TWO more weeks left to stock up on all the wonderful local foods at the market. Sunday will be sunny and cool so wrap up and come on out.

((Check out this lovely article about BFM by Stephanie Willis at DCfoodies.com
http://www.dcfoodies.com/2008/11/bloomingdale-fa.html?cid=139163382#comment-139163382))

New Asbury's meadow lamb, Truck Patch's beef and pastured pork, Painted Hand's humanely raised, pastured veal, goats and beef will last for months in your freezer. Winter Squash will stay perfectly in a cool room nearly all winter.

Have you reserved your truly grass ranging Thanksgiving CAPON from Truck Patc?. ( I am ordering two Ten pounders for our feast).

Pastured Lamb is back for its final week of the season at New Asbury. If you have never had this very tender, very mild, yet very flavorful Loudoun County lamb, you' re in a for a treat. Lamb stew samples and plenty of legs, loins, roasts, chops, sausages, stewing meats and ground. Raised on 12 acres of rolling pastures, this is truly the best lamb I have eaten in DC. ((A perfect meat loaf or burger uses ground lamb, pork and veal or beef!)).

Reid: A nice selection of eating apples including Honeycrisp, Gala, Fuji, Cameo (an improved cultivar of Red Delicious), Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Braeburn, Nittany, and the just-picked Pink Lady. PLUS an entire table for tart eating and baking apples like Granny Smith, Stayman, Winesap, and York that are just what you need for pie baking. There will also be apple cider, apple-cherry cider, and apple-grape cider.

Apple cider and butternut squash make a really good Fall soup.

Many apples will last for months in your fridge. Just ask Caitlin which are the best "keepers." And did you know that you should keep them away from the carrots because carrots kept right next to apples turn bitter.

Caitlin Reid says: stock up on her Apple Butter! She loves it on toast or pancakes plus it can makes a really great holiday gift. A good gift( instead of wine or flowers) to bring for Thanksgiving if you are going as a guest. I will take some to France this Xmas as stocking stuffers for French friends who love it. It doesn't exist in France.

Keswick says: We FINALLY! have all our hard cheeses to bring to market- Cheddar, Lesher, Vermeer, Wallaby and Dragons Breath. Limited amounts of Dragon's Breath and Blue Suede Moo- come early because they are so popular that I have to divide them up among all my markets so early risers at each market get the best pickings). The rainy and cooler weather has inspired a................

CHOCOLATE PUDDING SPECIAL this week: cups 2 for $3, 1/2lb tub 2.25 and 1 lb tub 4.50. Great for kids and the kids in us of us! Plus lots of yogurt, feta, quark, ricotta.

Painted Hand Farm: Several people have emailed me questions about the veal. This veal is from calves who are all humanely raised -- NEVER crated, never caged. They are hand- fed milk and milk-based food and then let out on pasture until they are about 300 pounds. NOT like industrially raised veal. But then it would not be at BFM if it were! Sandy will tell you all about her raising methods. Plus try her tender and tasty kid goat, grass fed and finished beef. And get there early for her eggs. She will have more next year.

Truck Patch: White and Green Cauliflower (Green has 25% more vitamins than the white), Broccoli, Romanesco, Brussels sprouts, turnips, green cauliflower, red and savoy cabbage. Heirloom tomatoes, curly kale, French Breakfast radishes. Arugula, mesclun, lettuce mix. All cuts of pastured beef and pork.

GRASS FED BEEF AT TRUCKPATCH: There will be a lot of tender steaks this week! Brian actually prefers the sirloin for steak as well as roasting in the oven. Sirloin is NOT as tender as other cuts but it has wonderful beefy flavor. But it is only for lovers of rare or medium rare -- never well done. He also like the rump and the cross cut for roasting. Brisket, chuck and many other braising and stew cuts this week. Brian's philosophy is: if the cut is not tender, he tells the butcher to turn it into ground meat.

Cooking Tip Brisket from Truck Patch or Painted Hand make a great stew and is easy to cook in a slow oven or in a crockpot. I bought some recently and made a stew of chopped onions, carrots, chopped greens, garlic and brisket. I added the remains of a bottle of cheap shiraz. Popped the covered casserole in a 250 degree oven until the meat was tender. It was delicious. The greens just melt into a sauce that is very flavorful. This takes about 10 minutes of prep time and can be ignored while it bakes for several hours in the oven. Variation: If you like a whisper of heat, add a whole hot pepper. For more heat, chop it. The smaller the pieces, the hotter the heat.

Chez Hareg: French butter cookies, of course. Vegan and Sugarless cookies, Pound cakes. Pies, maybe. Freshly baked dog biscuits. Italian biscotti.

Panorama Artisanal Bakery: Loic got a nice call- out in the City Paper today!

Part of the reason these chefs are buying from Panaroma is the same reason they first bought from Furstenberg: personalized service. "Mark was still incredibly hands-on with what was going on at Bread Line when he was there," Ziebold says. Since Furstenberg sold the business, however, Ziebold says he's "had probably six different managers I've had to talk to in the past three years.Å You're not able to get that micromanaged product now like you could when Mark was at Bread Line."
The change of culture has been visible to the deans of fine dining for some time now. Richard, for example, switched to Panorama before Bread Line's wholesale operation shut. Richard likes the individual attention he receives from Loic Feillet, the owner and baker at Panorama. "Michel found that he could work designing bread with Loic, the way he used to work with Mark Furstenberg," notes Mel Davis, PR coordinator for Citronelle via e-mail. "Loic was passionate about making a great product, and he was really trying hard to supply our needs."

http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/display.php?id=36481

And he is passionate about supplying our farmers market as well so let Emmanuel and Phoebe know if there are breads you want him to bake for us! (( We got that great Pumpernickel because I asked for it)). Sunday you will find Walnut Wheat. Sourdough. Brioches, baguettes. Multigrains. Croissants.. Muffins. Danish and those Rustiques that he bakes for us and Citronelle and Cityzen. And lots more....

Garner: Bernard has lots of everything veggie: Greens. Cabbages. 5 kinds of Winter Squash. Beans. Sweet Potatoes both red and white. (I really love the white ones!) Potatoes. Peppers. Swiss Chard. Lettuce. Romaine.Turnips. radishes. beets. mustards. spinach. Pie pumpkins.

See you Sunday.

five guys in NoMa

Five Guys Burgers and Fries Opens in NoMa

Washington, D.C., November 13, 2008… Five Guys, the popular homegrown restaurant that serves quality burgers and fries, opens today in the NoMa (north of Massachusetts Avenue) neighborhood of Washington, D.C. It joins Pound Coffee, which already is open, and two more restaurants -- Heidi’s Brooklyn Deli and Sister’s Pizza & Mussels, both scheduled to open in December -- in a retail building just outside the New York Avenue Metro station at 2nd and N Streets, N.E.

The NoMa Five Guys outlet will be operated by Charley Beresford, Dee Beresford, and Steve Forehand, a family team that runs four other Five Guys franchises in the District -- one inside the new Nationals Ballpark and the others in Chinatown, National Place, and International Square. “We decided to come to NoMa because it’s the next emerging business center,” he said. “With all the new tenants moving in like the Department of Justice and NPR, we know there will be a need for food!”

Five Guys was founded in Arlington, Virginia in 1986 by the Morrell family, and is now franchised with 262 stores throughout the East Coast. Its menu consists of burgers with a choice of 16 free toppings, hot dogs, fries, and sodas. Washingtonian magazine has rated Five Guys burgers the best in the area for the last seven consecutive years.

Capital Retail Group and LeDroit Park Development Company are leasing the 8,000 square foot retail building constructed by the U.S. General Services Administration adjacent to the new headquarters of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The retail building, featuring outdoor seating and direct access to Metro, is open to the public. A Chevy Chase Bank ATM, installed next to the Five Guys restaurant space, has proved highly popular with NoMa workers; the ATM’s transaction volume tripled between August and September.

“Five Guys will provide great synergy with the other amenities at the ATF retail building,” said Carla Merritt of LeDroit Park Development Company. Added Robert Tack of Capital Retail Group (www.capitalretailgroup.com): “Steve has a great track record and the experience needed to make this store a success.”

“We are excited about the new retail amenities coming to NoMa that will serve not only local office workers but also nearby residents,” said Elizabeth Price, President of the NoMa Business Improvement District (BID). “There is a great demand for new, high quality restaurants and Five Guys will be a great addition. With Harris Teeter under construction and other retail announcements expected over the coming months, NoMa is becoming a great place to live, work, and eat!”

NoMa is an emerging mixed-use neighborhood north of the U.S. Capitol and Union Station in Washington, D.C. Private developers have invested over $1 billion in 2007–2008 alone, with plans to develop more than 20 million square feet of office, residential, hotel, and retail space in the 35-block area covered by the NoMa BID over the next 10 years. For more information about the BID, including an interactive development map, see the BID Web site at www.nomabid.org.

There were no open houses scheduled through the MLS IN Bloomingdale for Sunday 11/2/08, so I did a search for the zip of 20001. Here's what came up. For open house times, don't forget that it's the weekend to change your clocks.

Seems to me like a lot of people are holding their breath before the election.

IF you shop at BFM, you will get a free raffle ticket from every producer you shop with . So, you have lots of chances to win! She will also be doing a Cooking Demo (see below)

http://www.culinaerie.com/

What's new:

Robin's favorite yogurt from Keswick
11 different hard cheese-- handmade cheddars and fetas and Wallabies and Vermeer
Fresh farmers cheese (Quark)
Fresh Ricotta and Italian Style Vachino Bianca
Blue Cheese
Fresh Bovre soft cheese
Feta and marinated feta in olive oil with peppercorns, a bay leaf and garlic.
Fresh Cream Cheese with herbs
Keswick's own Chocolate pudding, created for Melanie's daughter, Maddy
HUMANELY raised veal chops, scallopini and ground
Shitake Mushrooms
French classic cookies, biscotti, pies and cakes
TASTE FREE Samples of every single cheese at the stand.

Keswick Creamery is a grass-based Pennsylvania dairy farm, a family farm since the 1970s, although Melanie's family have been farmers since the 1800s. The 40 registered Jersey cows eat grass all summer, spring and Fall-- long grass that has never seen a pesticide or fertilizer. Hay in the winter. Of course Keswick does not use antibiotics or hormones, pesticides or fertilizers. Their cheesemaker, Melanie Dietrich-Cochran, has been making cheeses since 2001. She has 40 Registered Jersey cows, the gold standard of dairy cows and they are munching grass and converting it into rich Jersey milk. It has been a closed herd for 25 years which means that the cows are healthy because they are all born on the farm and watched carefully from birth.

They make a nice range of aged raw milk cheeses (aged for at least 60 days) and pasteurized fresh cheeses.

Painted Hand Farm: Running the Keswick stand at BFM will be Sandy Miller, a former California chef and former Food writer for the LA Times. She not only works for Keswick Creamery, but she has her own Painted Hand Farm and she will be bringing her own humanely raised Veal-- Sandy started to raise veal because she did not like the inhumane way calves were raised : talk to her about the way she raises hers! Try her chops, scallopini and ground meat. She will also bring a small quantity of her free- range eggs so come early for those.

Where's the BEEF? It is finally here at BFM at Truck Patch! Steaks, roasts, ground beef. Raised on grass, finished on grass with a choice of grain if the cows want to eat a little as well.

Chez Hareg Pastries: Fabulous classic French cookies, biscotti, pies and cakes plus a whole line of Vegan sweets are Hareg's specialties. She has been written up by the Washingtonian, the Washington Post and a lot of blogs. We are very excited to have her join us for the rest of the season to take NanBon's place. (Aisha has been ill and had to drop out for the rest of the season)

Greenstone Fields Farm: MUSHROOMS and beautiful flowers! Barbara and Dennis raise mushrooms and grow spectacular lilies! I tasted their shitake mushrooms for the first time on Wednesday and they were wonderful. Not available at any other market in DC. A BFM exclusive.

FREE COOKING DEMO: Chef Susan Watterson, co-owner of the hot new CULINAERIE Cooking School on 14th Street, CulinAerie http://www.culinaerie.com/ at the market on Sunday Oct 26th.

Susan has spent the past sixteen years as a cook, chef, and culinary educator. Upon graduation she worked at Old Angler's Inn, a popular Potomac, MD restaurant, and then became Managing Director of L'Academie de Cuisine in Bethesda for two years. Returning to the kitchen, Susan was the catering director of Fresh Start Catering, a division of DC Central Kitchen and then earned acclaim as the executive chef of Café Bethesda, maintaining the restaurant's standing as one of Washingtonian's "One Hundred Very Best" during her tenure of three years. She was most recently a full-time instructor for technique courses at L'Academie, including the popular Fundamental Culinary Techniques and Culinary Skills Lab courses. Susan searches out authentic cooking techniques on her many travels around the globe and serves on L'Academie de Cuisine's Advisory Board.

Plus our *old favorites* --all the great breads at Panorama, the wonderful apples and ciders and fruit sauces and preserves at Reid, the terrific range of vegetables at Garner and Truck Patch. And Truck Patch's pastured pork chops, roasts, bacon, sausages.

Now you can make a truly great meat loaf with ground pork and beef from Truck Patch and ground veal from Painted Hand Farm. Wow. Or a steak smothered in mushrooms from the market.

Or stuffed mushroom caps with Keswick Cheese. Yum.

car break in

i got this letter from a neighbor and wanted to pass it along:

This morning (Saturday, October 18th) our car was broken into in the back alley behind Quincy Place, NW (between North Capitol and 1st Streets, NW). This happened some time between Midnight and 6:00 a.m. Luckily nothing was taken, but our first aid kit was left open on the front seat and the passenger door was ajar. We usually keep our car locked but last night we were distracted when we came in and forgot to lock the car doors. This is doubly embarrassing since one of our neighbors warned us earlier this week that she had seen a man walking in between the cars parked in the alley one night, and when she asked him what he was doing, she noticed that he was inebriated and asked her for a cigarette.

Fast forward to a few days later, and someone was snooping around in our car only to open the first aid kit (probably searching for inhalants or other digestible drugs/medication), got distracted, and left the door open behind him/her. Not cool.

I just wanted to share this with everyone in the Bloomingdale community, to serve as a reminder that we are ALL responsible for keeping our neighborhood safe, and that ongoing vigilance of who, what, why, and where is still (unfortunately) necessary every day - and night.

With thanks,

Residents on Quincy

Open Houses in and around Bloomingdale scheduled for 10/19/2008

Thanks to all the agents who participated in lthe multi-broker Open House event in Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park last weekend. We had great turnout from neighbors and visitors who were curious to see what the neighborhood looks like.

Since we had a lot of Open houses in the immediate area last weekend, it is not surprising that there aren't a lot scheduled for this weekend. There are several within a few blocks though, so definitely some things to check out.

Here's the list.

I will be holding my listing in Shaw open from 1-4pm on Sunday. It's an almost 1000 sq foot 2BR 1BA condo one block from Metro. It has been fully updated and has nice city views. Address is 1605 7th St NW #6. Priced at $325,000.

In the neighborhood (not open this weekend, but worth mentioning because we just dropped the price to $274,900), is a condo listing I have at The Providence at 70 Rhode Island Ave NW, Unit 202. This is a fully updated true one bedroom with a great open floor plan, spacious kitchen with granite counters, wood floors, Kohler bathroom, and nice views of Bloomingdale's Victorian architecture.

this seems like another way to go crazy at home depot.

hopefully i'm wrong.

"For decades it has been extremely frustrating to get a permit from the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs," Fenty said. "You go down to 941 [North Capitol St.] or its predecessor and you ran around in circles before you left in frustration or got someone to [get a permit] for you. All of that has started to change."

apparently home despot has a kiosk to make getting a permit easier.

The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities in collaboration with residents from the LeDroit Park community selected muralist Garin Baker to design, create and install a mural that will be centrally located in the LeDroit Park neighborhood. Mr. Baker’s mural concept ties in the historical context of the neighborhood while enforcing a positive message.
