seeking advice on addressing supercans in the alley on noncollection days

See this message:

I live on the unit block of R Street NW, north side.

I have a question about people leaving their trash cans out in the alley behind our houses.

Do you know what person or department we need to call to have this problem addressed? Looking at the alley running between the unit blocks of Randolph and R Street NW, several people regularly leave their cans strewn all about the alley. In fact, the house directly behind mine (which I think is a small apartment building) not only leaves their 4 or 5 cans out in the alley, but there is ALWAYS trash lying on the ground near their cans.

Is this something that I should speak to our ANC rep perhaps?

seeking referrals for carpenters, handymen

See this message from a resident of R Street NW:

I am seekig references of good/reliable carpenters and/or handymen who could replace a wooden fence behind my house. I have found contractor Guillermo Orantes the Bloomingdale emails and the work he has done for me has been fantastic and in my opinion priced quite reasonably, but because he's so incredibly busy it's going to be awhile before he's available again.

So I was hoping to find some other names to get this project finished sooner rather than later.

found cat around 1st and U Street NW; Tuesday evening, 09-27-2011 cat update!

Has anyone lost a cat?

A very cute and very sweet grey and white tabby cat has been hanging around our house at 1st and U NW for the last couple of days. She (?) is very friendly- came right up to me for an ear scratch and belly rub- and not super-skinny, though she ate a ton of food when I gave it to her, so I think she is or was recently someone`s pet. She`s small, maybe 6 lbs and has beautiful green eyes. I can`t bring her inside (I have 2 cats and a dog already) but hope I can find her owner or find her a good home.

Please email me at scott dot molly at gmail if you know anything about her.

Here is an update on this found cat:
Can you please post that the cat found by a U Street neighbor has now been taken to the animal shelter on NY Avenue? We took her Tuesday evening. We were so afraid that she might get hit by a car. (She is such a sweetie) They are going to scan her for identification, check her out for any health concerns and then be put up for adoption. We had to name her, so her name for now is Precious, in case someone might want to follow-up. We also could not take her in, we have 2 cats as well. Thanks to all.

2011 Ward 5 redistricting & you presentation + SMD maps

ANC 5C04 Commissioner John Salatti held a meeting on Thursday evening, 09/22/2011, that included an update on the Ward 5 redistricting activities.

Here is John's message from his meeting:

"Regarding the Ward 5 redistricting update, I will be presenting what came out of the Ward 5 redistricting meetings that have been going on since July. Proposed changes to ANC districts will change how Bloomingdale and surrounding Ward 5 neighborhoods are represented. To help you see how the changes will affect you, I will have PowerPoint slides showing currents districts and proposed districts. I will also have several large paper maps of Ward 5 that have current political boundaries and 2010 census numbers. "

Here is his slideshow presentation:
2011 Ward 5 redistricting & you presentation

John took nine photos of the maps drawn by the assorted groups of volunteers working on creating the Ward 5 single member districts. The nine photos, while not very clear, at least provide you an idea of what the redistricting volunteers worked on.

"Where can we register our bicycles?"

See this message from a North Capitol Street household:

Neighbors: do any of you know where we can register our bikes? My husband just had his third bike stolen from him this past weekend - that makes 4 bikes stolen from our family in total. I`ve taken pictures of my bike but still don`t know where to register it. Can anyone help?

On a side note: we think we know who is stealing the bikes... Wish us luck on proving our hunch.

McMillan Planned Unit Development (PUD) documents available for pubic review

See this message from ANC 5C03 Commissioner Hugh Youngblood:

Please publish the following note to the relevant listservs and blogs to help spread the word about the McMillan PUD documents available for public review.

Hello,

We need your help with McMillan.

On behalf of the for-profit McMillan development team, the DC Government intends to apply for a Planned Unit Development (PUD) in the coming months.

``A PUD is a planning tool which allows a developer greater flexibility in site planning and building design. This flexibility permits the developer to incorporate amenities in the project that exceed those that could have been achieved under the general provisions of the Zoning Regulations. When a project is designated as a PUD, the Zoning Commission usually mandates the development of standards specifically tailored to the project.`` (http://dcoz.dc.gov/services/zoning/commish.shtm)

There`s still time to make a difference. We invite you to review the draft McMillan PUD documents and collect your questions, comments, and concerns for submission to the Zoning Commission and the McMillan Advisory Group (MAG).

Please send me your email address if you`d like me to provide you access to the McMillan PUD documents via an online file repository.

Thank you,

Hugh Youngblood

McMillan Sand Filtration Site tour -- Saturday, 09-17-2011

From ANC 5C04 Commissioner John Salatti. Note that the lengthy waiver text is * not * supplied here.

Good morning!

In our neighborhood, we have one of Washington's most unique places, the McMillan Sand Filtration Site. This 25-acre site bounded by the unit blocks of Michigan Avenue and Channing Street and the 2500 through 2900 blocks of First Street and North Capitol Street is a mystery to many people. But it need not stay a mystery. To that end, I am pleased to announce that, by popular request, the Site will be open for tours this Saturday, September 17, 2011.

Tours will start at 11:00 a.m. and anyone is welcome (although I must admit that the site if not accessible for someone with a physical impairment). I have included below the waiver form that anyone attending the tour must fill out. So if you can fill out it, sign it, and e-mail it back to me, that would be great. You can also fill out it and bring it with you Saturday morning. That will save a lot of time.

I really encourage people to come and see McMillan, whether you have just moved here and have wondered what that lonely place is up First Street, or whether you have lived here all your life and know exactly what the Site is and was. It is both amazing and beautiful.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

We are really suffering from the mosquitos/insects. It was around the same time last year as well. I was wondering if DC provides any kind of extermination or any kind of control. neighborhood dog needs a new home

See this message:

We are looking for a new home for our pet dog Mica.

Mica is a sweet, loyal, even tempered dog. Because of her large triangular ears, narrow snout, thin body, and bushy tail, she looks somewhat like a black and white fox. She enjoys walks, and snuggling on the couch. Mica is 7 years old, and weighs about 50 pounds. She is spayed, and current on all of her shots and vaccinations. She`s lived in the District her entire life.

Because of changes in our family, and our child care, we aren`t able to give her the love and attention that she deserves. So we are looking for another person who can. I`ve attached a photo.

a resident's concern about the proposed medical marijuana dispensary

See this 09/09/2011 message passed along by ANC 5C03 Commissioner Hugh Youngblood:

A resident of the Unit Block of Florida Avenue NW shared the following concerns to facilitate dialogue about medical marijuana in the community.

``Wow!! Soon our neighborhood will be the epicenter of feel-good pharmaceuticals in the District of Columbia. New businesses are sprouting up everywhere around us. One night, Volunteers of America slipped into the Madison at 52 Florida Ave. NW and is distributing psychotropic drugs from that location. About a block away, we will have a ``legal`` marijuana distribution operation on North Capitol Street (just south of the Halfway House on Quincy Place NW, just east of the Mental Health Clinic on Florida Avenue NW, around the corner from the S.O.M.E. Soup Kitchen and n nestled in between the Ex-Offender Project and the Homeless Transgender Clinic on North Capitol Street NW).

Throw in the crack operation which comes and goes along First Street and a liquor store on every corner, and we service about every drug culture out there. In retrospect, it is regrettable that the methadone clinic has closed. The opiate crowd is not represented. Think how diverse our neighborhood will become with the influx of the new consumers. A heavy burden will be lifted from MPD. Why chase the drug trade when it will be impossible to determine the legal from the illegal? Now that we have attracted them here, it is only right that we provide accommodations. After all, smoking is prohibited in most enclosed areas such as restaurants, taverns, fast food outlets, etc. It would be unsightly to allow people to sit on our steps and nod off, plus that marijuana smell can be pretty obnoxious. My suggestion is that we face reality and create space for our new neighbors. The new Florida Ave. Park is now just beginning a million-dollar facelift. As we all know, the old Park was a haven for alcoholics, druggers, prostitutes and the like. It was seldom that you walked by and did not detect the odor of burning marijuana. The original idea for the new Park was to create a space where children could play and the neighborhood could come together. This is unrealistic. The City is just wasting its money. The new consumers will be attracted to the new Park just as bees are to honey. Forget the children`s play area, the horseshoe pits and the basketball courts. The Park needs outside toilet facilities, space and safe furniture for those who are physically impaired while under the influence of the pharmaceuticals we are providing. Sunset liquor store can expand to a head shop to conveniently provide pipes, bongs, cigarette paper and perhaps even water pipes for use in the Park. Those who opposed gentrification (whatever that means) will now have the last laugh. Just as our fragile neighborhood was getting over the violence, drug trafficking, high crime and unsafe streets of yesteryear, it looks like it`s headed back. This is progress.``

seeking referrals for a contractor who knows how to properly install a ceiling fan

See this request from a Quincy Place NW resident:

Can anyone recommend a contractor who specializes in -- or at least understands well -- how to properly install a ceiling fan? I had my contractor install two fans, but I think the fan boxes are loose because they rattle. He came back to fix them, but they are still rattling. I think the fans need to removed completely and remounted after carefully anchoring down the box. I'd really appreciate a good lead on someone who has experience with ceiling fans.

John Salatti: tonight`s safety walk cancelled

From: John T. Salatti

Sent: Wed, September 7, 2011 10:13:59 AM

Subject: Tonight`s Safety Walk cancelled

Because of the high probability of strong storms including lightening this evening, my colleagues and I have decided that the prudent move is to cancel tonight`s walk. Although we have conducted walks in inclement weather, tonight`s forecast is such that choosing safety is the right choice. We will continue to schedule walks through out the fall and will keep you posted about the timing. If people have any questions about the change, they should feel free to contact me directly.

Have a great day,

Stu: Les Petits Chanteurs returning to Bloomingdale this week

See this message from Stuart Davenport:

I want to let people know that Les Petits Chanteurs are returning to Bloomingdale this week, and they will be performing at the Art Museum of the Americas at the OAS building this Friday at 1pm.

See the flier attached.

Les Petits Chanteurs are the Haitian choral singers and classical musicians who performed in Bloomingdale two years ago at St. George`s Church, the Bloomingdale Farmers Market, and the Big Bear Cafe during the annual neighborhood pig roast (bi-annual??).

They are now touring the eastern United States as they perform and raise funds to rebuild their school and music hall in Port Au Prince.

They come into DC on Thursday, Sept. 8th and will be having a BBQ at the Big Bear Cafe from 3:30pm-8pm. They then head to the National Cathedral to prepare for their tour (and practice for their performance at OAS on Friday).

For all neighbors who offered housing, helped with the BBQ, and came to hear them sing years ago - come say hello at the BBC! Or the OAS building on friday.

From a Florida Avenue NW resident:

I`m looking for someone in the neighborhood who might have experience with Feng Shui or know someone who does Feng Shui work?

I`m looking to re-vamp my home to conform with Feng Shui philosophy.

See this 09/05/2011 message from a Florida Avenue NW resident:

I found a kitten near 1st and Florida NE. Almost got hit by a car. Seems very domesticated. Friendly and clean like someone is taking care of it. Maybe someone lost it. Attaching a photo. Orange, white and cute.

Seeking Stories about the Giant in Shaw

A Neighbor passed along this request for stories of the Giant in Shaw.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have any fond (or less-than-fond) memories of the O Street Giant in Shaw, please let me know. I’m collecting them for a story on the store, which seems to be universally acknowledged as one of the worst grocery stores in D.C. Call (703.842.1734) or email (jrogers@tbd.com).

* one * neighbor's comment on 126 Bryant St NW

Let me post this comment from a Bloomingdale resident -- with reservation:

The residents of 126 Bryant St NW have been a major problem for the other residents of that block.

There was recently a drug bust there, which resulted in arrests.

ARREST# : 101111617
DT-TM: 22-MAR-11 - 1825
LOCATION: 126 BRYANT STREET NORTHWEST - PSA: 501
OFFENDER: FRANCIS, G
SEX: M
OFFENSE: UCSA PWID MARIJUANA
TYPE: UNDETERMINED
OFFICER: JAMES

I suggest that the person who suffered an attack by the two pit bulls that live at 126 Bryant, pursue having the police bring down the hammer on these people. Call the council members office for help and ask your ANC for help.

If you decide to file a suit to recover expenses, these charges will help bolster your case in court.

Go after the homeowner also. They have assets, the house being one of them.

Good Luck.
