"tie a string to something, and see where it takes you..."
A trip through a wildly familiar landscape in a play as one of America's greatest painters might have conceived: a Rauschenberg-esque collage of people, places, icons, music and dancing, of love stories and the sheer exhilaration of living in a country where people make up their lives as they go.

Neighbors,
Below please find below a flyer that is being circulated around the community in connection with the Fun Day that has been planned to take place in the pocket park on First and Florida Avenue, N.W. on this Saturday. This is the second in a series of events that Mayor Fenty's Office of Constituent Services has taken primary responsibility for organizing as a reflection of the Mayor's commitment to help us to address our public safety concerns about the park as well as the larger community. In addition, Ward Five Council Member Thomas and others, including the Fifth District Police, are supporting this project. As a community, we have been asked to (1) attend this function and (2) to donate some hamburgers, rolls, condiments and, possibly, soft drinks for it. If anyone is in a position to make a donation of any kind for this event, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can coordinate the contribution with the resources that are being gathered by our neighbor and Mayor Fenty's Ward Five Constituent Services and Relations Representative, Alice Thompson. As always, if we are going to transform this park into a socially productive place for the enjoyment of residents of all ages, then we need to make frequent and productive use of it. Saturday is an opportunity to do so. Hope to see you there!
Best,
Jim Berry

The washington post has an article about linking lead exposure to criminal activity.
"Sixty-five to ninety percent or more of the substantial variation in violent crime in all these countries was explained by lead."

the big bear on saturday
See this message from Big Bear's Lana Labermeier:
Thank you so much for your support! Come celebrate one month in business with us this Saturday the 7th! We have a few things planned:
In the morning Jessica -- head pastry chef of Hawthorne -- will come by to chat and maybe reveal the secrets behind the best blueberry muffin in town (or maybe you prefer the sticky buns? or the chocolate croissants? or the raisin scones?).
Then, around 2:30 pm or so in the afternoon, we'll have a complimentary coffee tasting of 5 of Counter Culture's single origins: La Golondrina, from Cauca, Colombia; Dolok Sanggul, Sumatra; Gayo, Aceh, Sumatra; Gitare, Kiambu, Kenya; and Finca nueva Armenia, Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Did you know that coffee is like wine? Each region produces a distinctive taste, and we've chosen a few different ones to highlight. Taste them all and decide on your favorite!
We will also debut our Big Bear t-shirts for men, women, children, and dogs. And we will begin selling our delicious house coffee by the pound.
Papa Chapa, back from Barcelona, may be DJ-ing.
Hope to see you here!
-Lana

you rock anacostia, you wall of fire you.
while my picture doesnt do it justice, the anacostia is a wall of fire from the perspective of a rooftop in eckington on a fourth of july evening.
eckington, you had some nice work, especially you guys that took over harry thomas way....for real. thats was intense. there was stuff flying up from rhode island and third that was pretty heavy too.
edgewood represented well.
i could only see patches of bloomingdale.. but there were some truly stellar rockets being fired.
but anacostia. you never fail.
depsite my distaste for dynamite like explosives in my alley, i do love you DC for your amazing fireworks display.

the eckington hotel
eckington hotel info:
The 218-room hotel is located at 201 Florida Avenue, NE at the intersection of 2nd Street, NE and New York Avenue at the center of the NoMa Corridor in Washington, DC. Retail is located on the ground floor of the building with a restaurant, lounge, swimming pool and meeting rooms located on the second floor.
i hadnt walked over to the metro in months, but i did the other day.
there is now a billboard with a picture of the hotel on the lot.
seems that the ATF outbuilding has retail space on both the florida avenue side and the to-be-re-opened 2nd street NE side. there is info in the window if anyone is interested in opening up something......
i wonder if the 90 buses will be rerouted down 2nd to stop directly in front of the metro entrance. anyone know?
