actually it was today... years and years from my teens. and i didnt use and ax, but a cordless recipro saw. still i murdered a tree in my front yard today.
i have chopped down a few trees in my life. mostly ones that were fairly dead and would fall soon. this one was fairly healthy, but it stood in the way of my vision for my front yard. i morbidly joked with my wife that i felt like i was clubbing a seal to death. but my bloodlust took hold of me as i imagined a nice seating area and some other plants that i dont know the name of.
So good bye tree. while i feel guilty for destroying your beautiful greeness, you won't be missed. not at all. already my living room is brighter!

Oooh, I'm having a back-and-forth with myself over two ginormous cypress-like trees that both offer some privacy from my front porch to the street and block my view of what's going on out there. I saw a very old picture of the house (circa 1950s or 1960s) and the trees were mere bushes. What to do, what to do? It helps to hear you're not feeling any regret...Were you able to take the stump out, or did you just leave it?
i took the stump out. the trees were still relatively small. small enough to not need a permit.
maybe 9 feet tall.
and yeah. no regrets at all. mine were cypressy too. beautiful green. but the type of tree that needs to be maintained properly, trimmed just so. thats a bit beyond me.
Don't do it... this neighborhood is attractive in large part because of the trees. Too many neighbors are chopping down beautiful old trees.

i hear your sentiment. but not all the trees are old. or attractive.
mine were neither.
i would like to add that everyone should make sure the trees in the tree boxes get enough water!
