Expect more of this. When you get folks with enough money to buy up older houses, tear them down and build bigger houses in their place---this sort of thing will be rampant. Take a look at the neighborhood of Wicker Park-Bucktown in Chicago. Same dynamic happend about 15 years ago and at least 1/3 of the old townhouses have been torn down with large modern lofts replacing them. Now, if you like that sort of thing, fine. If you like Bloomingdale how it looks now...then the only way to protect it from this sort of thing is to get historical status.
