WaPo: "Tom Sietsema's 8 favorite places to eat, plus 1 to avoid" article mentions Red Hen

Click on the link to read the entire Washington Post article.

March 25 at 12:00 PM

...

The model for the Red Hen wasn’t one restaurant, but rather the amalgam of places that Mike Friedman says he had the good fortune to eat in as a younger chef: Zuni Cafe in San Francisco, Lucques in Los Angeles, River Cafe in London — “all owned by women,” he points out. The only question I had after my most recent meal in Bloomingdale was why it had been so long between visits. Red Hen is the ideal neighborhood community center, after all, dressed with a welcoming bar, lit as with honey in mind and warmed by a wood-stoked oven that does wonderful things to chicken, among other dishes. Toast with Sicilian anchovies, radishes and sweet butter is a blissful Act 1. Follow it with some pasta, maybe mafalde with melted leeks, wild mushrooms and a carpet of herby bread crumbs. Reservations are hard to come by. The good news: Friedman says he keeps up to 40 percent of his tables for walk-ins and reminds us that the 18-seat bar is first come, first served.

1822 First St. NW. 202-525-3021 . Pastas and main courses, $18 to $29.

The Train-Wreck: Our Second (Free) Stand-Up Comedy Workshop Show at The Unified Scene Theater -- Tuesday, 03-26-2019

The Train-Wreck: Our Second (Free) Stand-Up Comedy Workshop Show at The Unified Scene Theater, Tuesday, March 26th, 8 pm

FREE! Doors at 7:30 pm, show's at 8 pm

Five weeks ago, some improvisors showed up to the The Unified Scene Theater and didn't do improv. Instead, they began workshopping and honing 5 minutes of stand-up comedy. Together they laughed, blanched, grimaced, laughed again, and basically gave each other support as they crafted a five-minute act. And now they're gonna do that act for you — free, of course. On Tuesday, March 26th, we're going up to perform at The Unified Scene Theater (80 T Street NW, Bloomingdale, DC). Show up. Like, it might be a train wreck, but, hey, those are always entertaining. Right? Plus, it's free and all. Free train wreck -- I know, right? More info here. See you then!

three weeks from today: Mapping Segregation Walking Tour of Bloomingdale

See this 03-13-2019 message from a Bloomingdale resident:

I noticed this walking tour of Bloomingdale advertised by the Hill Center. I imagine other residents would be interested.

Mapping Segregation Walking Tour

Sunday, April 14 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Historian Sarah Shoenfeld, co-director of PrologueDC , will lead a walking tour of DC’s Bloomingdale neighborhood. Racially restrictive deed covenants kept much of this neighborhood off-limits to African Americans until the 1940s. A series of legal challenges to covenants in Bloomingdale culminated in the 1948 case Hurd v. Hodge, which was heard by the Supreme Court. This tour will feature some of the houses and blocks subject to battles over covenants along the shifting geographic lines that divided African Americans from their white neighbors here during the first half of the 20th century, and commemorates the 50th anniversary of The Civil Rights Act of 1968, also known as the Fair Housing Act.

Mapping Segregation in Washington DC is documenting the historic segregation of DC’s housing, schools, playgrounds, and other public spaces. To date the project has focused on racially restrictive housing covenants, which had a dramatic impact on the development of the nation’s capital decades before government-sanctioned redlining policies were implemented in cities across the country.

The tour will start at the small park across from Big Bear Café at First and R Streets NW and will take 1.5 to 2 hours. Please arrive prior to 2 PM.

Made possible in part by support from the DC Commission of the Arts & Humanities and the Capitol Hill Community Foundation.

[Attachment(s) from Josephine Chu included below]

Hi Everyone,

Learn how to use herbs medicinally in our upcoming Home Apothecary Program.

This 8-month herbal medicine program from April to November is a hands-on introduction to herbalism. Meeting once per month, participants will tend a garden together, explore the basic concepts of herbalism, and make lots of herbal preparations to bring home and to share with the Common Good community. The home apothecary program offers a unique opportunity to learn about using herbs while working directly with the plants and developing connection to the land and ecosystem we call home. This program will be taught by Holly Poole-Kavana of Little Red Bird Botanicals.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Many thanks,

the first 2019 history walking tour around the perimeter of McMillan Park including a walk through Bloomingdale starting near Big Bear -- Saturday, 03-23-2019

See this message:

Preserve, restore, and reopen McMillan Park for the people.
FRIENDS of McMILLAN PARK

Join us for a history walking tour around McMillan Park on Saturday, March 23rd at 9:00am (rain date: Sun. Mar. 24th) - our first tour of 2019!

Dear Friend of McMillan Park,
About ten days from now on Saturday, March 23rd, we will be hosting another history walking tour through Bloomingdale and around the perimeter of McMillan Park. Once again, we are fortunate to have our neighbor and friend Paul Cerruti leading the tour.  Paul has compiled a tremendous amount of detail about the park and its role in our neighborhood through the years since it was first opened to the public. This will cover a lot of the information presented in history walks we hosted in 2017 and 2018 that were very well attended and enjoyed!  The weather we hope will be ideal for such a walking tour.  This is our first tour of 2019.  We hope to have about four tours per year though no dates for subsequent tours. Space still available!

The tour will showcase McMillan Park, its vistas, unique history, and connection to historic landmarks in the Bloomingdale neighborhood.  The first part of the walk will include information and bonus highlights about the history and development of Bloomingdale, much of it in anticipation of the opening of McMillan Park.

The tour will last about two to three hours or so and will start at the triangular park opposite the Big Bear Café (located at the corner of 1st St. and R St. NW) on Saturday, March 23rd at 9:00am (rain date Sun. Mar. 24th at 9:00am). Light liquid refreshments will be served and a selection of some of our favorite mounted art photos of McMillan Park offered for sale at the end of the tour, as well as some lovely greeting cards of those same photos!

Please register by sending an email to restoremcmillan@gmail.com or calling Kirby at 202 213-2690.  We are limiting the tour to 30 people or so to ensure all who join it can hear easily and participate fully. So please register early to guarantee that you'll be able to be part of this special day.

Kindly note, a suggested donation of $20 in advance, $25 on the day of the event to benefit the Friends of McMillan Park's efforts to save this registered national historic landmark from demolition is greatly appreciated.  Even if you are unable to join our tour, please consider a donation to help support these efforts.  You can donate via PayPal or Crowdrise links on the web page, www.friendsofmcmillan.org/merchandise, or in person with cash or credit card with FOMP's Square account on the day of the event.

          *****News*****

- Friends of McMillan Park returned to the D.C. Court of Appeals on January 22nd
to present oral arguments challenging the District's proposed demolition of the site.
Now we anxiously await the court's decision, both for that most recent hearing and
another hearing on October 17th, which of course we hope will be in our favor, or rather
in McMillan Park's favor. We have no idea when the court's decision will come out, or if
the court will decide to combine both the zoning appeal and the historic preservation
  appeal into one decision.
