Hello Ward 5,
Since taking office, I have focused on engaging the Ward 5 community and improving your government to make it work as hard as you do. As we approach the end of my first year, I am encouraged by how much we have accomplished together to improve not only the standard of living in our Ward, but across the District of Columbia.
In my short tenure, our office has taken the necessary steps to advance Ward 5’s priorities and set the bar higher to meet the expectations of our residents. We have increased economic development throughout the Ward, held government agencies accountable to improve the delivery of city services, and enhanced the overall quality of life for all Ward 5 residents. Because of this, I am confident about the road ahead of us and the future of our Ward.
To commemorate my first year as your Ward 5 Councilmember, I will hold a town hall meeting on Tuesday, June 25th. The event will be an opportunity for us to come together to reflect on the many accomplishments we have seen throughout the year, as well as a chance for me to outline my vision for the future of Ward 5. My State of the Ward Address will be held at Luke C. Moore, located at 1001 Monroe Street, NE beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Celebrating 75 years of Langston Terrace
The District's first public housing project, Langston Terrace, celebrated its 75th anniversary last week. Councilmember McDuffie joined Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes-Norton, HUD Assistant Secretary Sandra Henriquez, the Mayor’s Director of Community Affairs Stephen Glaude, and DC Housing Authority Executive Director Adrianne Todman to honor Langston Terrace for its rich history and the community it has enriched for 75 years.
“I am delighted that such an important historic landmark is located in Ward 5,” said Councilmember McDuffie. “But it is the residents of the Langston Terrace community that embody a living history and are the true treasures of Ward 5.”

Honoring the Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church

Councilmember McDuffie and the D.C. Council passed a resolution honoring the accomplishments of the Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church. Greater Mt. Calvary has been a pillar in Ward 5 for many years. The church has educated and nurtured thousands of children; fed and clothed thousands of the District’s most needy citizens; and has provided much needed support to residents with HIV/AIDS.
Councilmember McDuffie presented the resolution to Senior Pastor Archbishop Alfred A. Owens Jr., Co-Pastor Susie C. Owens, and their over 4,000 members present, during a special service on Sunday unveiling Greater Mt. Calvary Way, located on 600 block of Rhode Island Avenue, NE.

Legislative Updates:
The Committee on Government Operations Holds Budget Mark-Up
The Committee on Government Operations, chaired by Councilmember McDuffie, approved the Committee Report for the Mayor’s FY 2014 proposed budget at a mark-up hearing held on Thursday, May 9th. Highlights from the mark-up include:
- The Committee on Government Operations transferred $414,850 to the Committee on Workforce and Community Affairs to support services for senior District residents.
- The Committee transferred $2 Million to the Committee on Transportation and the Environment for the Department of Transportation project to support the Rhode Island Avenue Small Area Plan.
- The Committee transferred $300,000 to the Committee on Business, Consumer and Regulatory Affairs to support the creation of a Rhode Island Avenue, NE Main Street the Clean Team on Bladensburg Road, NE.
- The Committee increased the Board of Elections’ budget by $185,000 for Electronic Poll Books and Direct-Recording Electronic voting machines.
- The Committee transferred $300,000 to the Committee on Human Services for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program for families.

Langdon Park Tree Care Event
Casey Trees will be holding a tree care event on Thursday, May 23 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Ward 5 September 11 Memorial Grove located at Langdon Park. This is a volunteer event and all participants must register at http://caseytrees.org/event/thirsty-thursday-langdon-park/.
DDOT Offers Davis-Bacon Compliance Workshop
On Thursday, May 23rd from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., a Davis-Bacon and Related Acts (DBA) Compliance Workshop for Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) firms and other small businesses is being hosted by the District Department of Transportation's (DDOT) Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Supportive Services Program, in partnership with U.S Department of Labor (DOL) Office of Enforcement Policy, Wage and Hour Division, DC Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) and the 11th Street Bridge Project Management Team.
The workshop will be held at the Anacostia Gateway Government Center, located at 1800 Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, SE. This workshop is free of charge and is recommended for firms who are required to comply with DBA. All DBE/CBE/DSVOB construction firms are strongly encouraged to attend.
