Howard University in the Summertime
Local Filmmakers Screen “Brick by
Brick” and “What
Happened 2 Chocolate City”
On July 20th,
local filmmakers showed two documentary films about gentrification
in Washington, D.C. Shirikiana Aina, Howard alumna and
co-owner of Sankofa Video, Books and Café screened her film “Brick by Brick”
about the damaging effects of displacement on people of color in
1970s Washington. Mignotae Kebede, writer and director of “What Happened 2
Chocolate City,” along with her Director of
Photography, Mensa Johnson, screened her film which examined the
same phenomenon of gentrification in 2018 through the experiences
of three D.C. residents. The event was sponsored by District
Bridges’ Lower Georgia Avenue Main Street program and took place on
Howard’s Upper Georgia Avenue parking lot where Howard staff and
students and neighborhood residents gathered and Georgia Avenue
shops were able to get a little more business. A panel
discussion preceded the film showing and some 65 people from the
neighborhood were in attendance. “What Happened 2 Chocolate City”
is still a work in progress and for more information or to help the
filmmaker complete this project, visit: https://bit.ly/2PLqzbl

Ernest Everett Just Court Dedication and LeDroit Park
Civic Association Block Party
On Sunday, August 18th, the LeDroit Park Civic
Association cut the ribbon for the naming of the Ernest Everett Just
Court, located between “T” Street and Florida Avenue in the LeDroit
Park neighborhood at their block party. Howard University supported
the naming of this court, named for Howard’s own faculty member, Dr.
Ernest Everett Just, renown biologist, and one of the founders of the
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Dr. Just lived on “T” Street next
door to what later became the residence of the late Walter
Washington, the first 20th century elected Mayor of the
District of Columbia. The Court is being named so that the
residents who live within that Court can have a formal address to
which their mail can be delivered.

College of
Nursing & Allied Health Gets New Temporary Home
In January 2018, Howard University experienced a campus-wide
critical systems failure related to our central steam plant and its
associated infrastructure. This event caused damage to several
campus buildings. Among the most severely affected
locations were the two buildings that house the College of Nursing
and Allied Health Sciences (CNAHS)–Annex I and Annex II. Damage to
the Annex buildings was so extensive that the University has been
required to completely evacuate and temporarily shut down these
facilities.
The College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences will need to
continue to operate its eight stellar academic programs while
longer-term solutions are devised and implemented to return the
School to an appropriate permanent home. To facilitate this, the
University has created new classrooms in brand-new
state-of-the-art modular units located on the Banneker North
Parking Lot at 2525 Sherman Ave, NW.
