Neighbors, Last week, the Council took the first of two votes on the fiscal year 2020 budget. Throughout the budget process, I have focused on balancing resident needs and priorities. Among the difficult decisions in this budget cycle, the Council considered how to meet the needs of students and parents across the city. During this debate, I was proud to see Banneker High School students demand a modern educational facility for one of the District’s highest performing schools. Ultimately, I voted to support them and relocate Banneker from their current site, and I will continue to work on this issue leading up to the Council’s second vote. The Committee of the Whole is tasked with compiling budget reports from all Council committees into one budget. As Chair of the Committee on Business and Economic Development, I was pleased that our committee report was left largely untouched by the Committee of the Whole. Our report supported District based-small businesses, neighborhood revitalization, improved health outcomes, support for seniors, workforce investment, and pedestrian safety. I also identified $3 million to fund violence prevention and intervention through the NEAR Act’s Cure Violence model, which has demonstrated early positive results in addressing violent crime. As the Council moves toward the second vote, scheduled for Tuesday, May 28, I will continue to work to strike a balance between needs and priorities of all District residents. Congratulations to these Moms Who Enterprise Congratulations to the Walker's Legacy Foundation and the Washington, DC Spring 2019 inaugural class of Moms Who Enterprise program, who celebrated the completion of this program over Mother's Day weekend. Moms Who Enterprise is a national entrepreneurship program for enterprising single mothers.  The program includes original curriculum, a dedicated instructor and a cohort model designed to support women in the growth and advancement of their firms. DDOT will present design concepts and gather comments from the community at these public meetings. Additional details available on the Anacostia Waterfront Initiative website. Over the coming months, Chancellor Ferebee will be hosting a series of small-group “DCPS Dialogue” gatherings at schools, libraries, and community centers across the District. The purpose is to host topic-specific  conversations and gather feedback going into School Year 2019-2020. DATE: Wednesday, May 29 TIME: 9:00 - 10:30 am LOCATION: Bunker Hill Elementary School, 1401 Michigan Ave NE RSVP DC Water Townhall - June 4 Each year, DC Water conducts town hall meetings in all 8 wards, which provide customers an opportunity to learn about the water authority’s proposed rates and fees for next year while allowing the public to share concerns, comments and ideas. The meetings are intended to provide customers with an opportunity to comment on new rates for the fiscal year that begins October 1. The Ward 5 town hall will take place on Tuesday, June 4.
