View this email in your browser Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project Florida Avenue NW Construction Site Update August 14, 2019   Greetings Neighbors! On the week of August 19, 2019, work will begin to relocate the fire hydrant to 4th Street NW and then to remove a portion of the sidewalk along the eastbound direction of Florida Avenue, between Rhode Island Avenue and 3rd Street, NW. The work should take about two weeks and will restrict travel and parking, as well as pedestrian walkways, in the eastbound direction of Florida Avenue. Removing a portion of the sidewalk will allow room for traffic lane shifts on Florida Avenue NW around the construction site. The relocation of the fire hydrant was coordinated with the DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department. Travel Restrictions Eastbound Florida Avenue, NW will be reduced to one lane of traffic beginning at Rhode Island Avenue, NW and ending just before 3rd Street, NW. Eastbound traffic will merge left into one lane around the construction site. The two westbound lanes will be maintained. The crosswalk across Florida Avenue at 3rd Street will be eliminated; therefore, pedestrians must cross Florida Avenue at Rhode Island Avenue, as illustrated below. Pedestrian Detour The crosswalk across Florida Avenue at 3rd Street will be eliminated; therefore, pedestrians must cross Florida Avenue at Rhode Island Avenue, as illustrated below. The pedestrian detour is indicated by green arrows. The crosswalk across Florida Ave at 3rd Street will be closed. Additional Information People who live or work near the affected locations will notice additional construction equipment and personnel as well as noise associated with construction activities. Commuters and pedestrians will notice road signs and/or flagging personnel directing them safely around the worksite. Pedestrians will notice signage for the closed sidewalk restricting access. Project Details The Northeast Boundary Tunnel is the largest component of the Clean Rivers Project. It begins south of RFK Stadium and will extend north to Rhode Island Avenue, NE, and west to 6th Street NW. When complete, the approximately five-mile-long tunnel will significantly reduce chronic flooding in areas it serves, as well as reduce the amount of combined sewer overflows into the Anacostia River.
