one Bloomingdale neighbor's backflow preventer tale

Here is one Bloomingdale neighbor's tale on pursuing the installation of a backflow preventer in his home:

I'll give you a brief summary of my experience. I have met with a couple of plumbers - both master plumbers, licensed in DC.

Best price so far is $6,300 - this is made up of the install of the back flow preventer, along with installation of a sump pump to address the exterior drain. Without re routing the exterior drain (outside my basement front door) and install of the sump pump this drain would overflow from runoff if the backflow preventer were engaged - and thus flood the basement.

So realistically both have to be done. Neither plumber was interested in using a separate contractor for the digging and cement work as they were concerned about inspections, and the ability to provide a guaranty if the work was not performed entirely by their respective companies.

Given the significant non reimbursable expense, I am not sure that I can move forward at this point.

Can anyone recommend a backflow valve contractor?

Are you on the Bloomingdale flooding issues Google group? There have been several recommendations on that list.

I had estimates from two plumbers who were recommended on the list and two others. I went with one from the list and was very satisfied with the installation. Of course, I will not know how well it works until it is tested by a storm/backflow event.

If you are not a member of the list, you can request an invitation from TJ Quinn.

Thank you. Which plumber installed your valve?

I used Aspen Hill. I was very satisfied, but as I said above, I cannot totally judge the work because there is really no way to test it. I can say that they were punctual, tidy, pleasant, hard-working, etc. Plus, it passed inspection. Guess it is like the air bag in your car - you just have to trust that it will work if the need arises. lol They have done other neighbors and are working at my next door neighbor's house today - at least they have a lot of experience.
