I’m so excited to announce the new Ward One team.
As the Councilmember-elect, I’ve assembled a team of experts on issues that matter to you — especially our priorities of affordable housing, education and ethics. As you’ll see, the team has deep roots in the District and brings a diverse array of experiences that will help achieve our ultimate mission: to engage with the people of Ward 1 to build a strong, safe and sustainable community.
We are also committed to being responsive to residents because we believe that every constituent’s opinion matters. We’ve been laying the groundwork for months, so that we can hit the ground running once I take office in early January.
If you’d like to meet the team in person, join us for the Ward One Council Open House on Friday, January 2 from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. in our new office, Suite 102, in the John A. Wilson Building (1350 Pennsylvania Ave, NW). We’ll be celebrating my swearing in as your new Councilmember.

Meet Councilmember Brianne Nadeau’s Team

Tania Jackson, Chief of Staff
Tania Jackson was raised in Ward 1 and has more than 20 years of experience in neighborhood-level community outreach, communications and project-related activism. Working variously with local government, non-profits and socially responsible for-profit entities, she has been able to help bring projects to fruition all over the District of Columbia. 
In 2009 she started her own consulting organization, Create Communitas, specializing in public-private development, tenant purchase, and compliance with District and federal hiring standards. She currently serves on the Board of Humanities D.C., the Mary Church Terrell House, is the Vice Chair of the Ward One Democrats and a member of the Potomac Chapter of the Links, Inc. Tania’s first job after finishing college was working for then-Ward One Councilmember Frank Smith.
She is a seventh generation Washingtonian and speaks French.

Tom Fazzini, Deputy Chief of Staff and Communications Director
A U Street resident, Tom brings a decade of experience serving in political and non-profit communications roles in the government, campaigns, and as an advisor to non-profit and progressive organizations. Previously, he was a Senior Director at West End Strategy Team, and Senior Associate at Rabinowitz/Dorf Communications. Tom served as a communications official in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and as press secretary for U.S. Senator Ben Nelson and deputy press secretary for U.S. Senator Ron Wyden. During the 2008 campaign season, Tom served as the deputy communications director for the Obama campaign in Indiana. He also served as a senior communications official at a start-up nonprofit focused on ending the corrupting influence of money in politics. Tom is a graduate of Oberlin College.
Danielle Burs, Legislative Director
Prior to joining Councilmember Nadeau’s office, Danielle served as Director of Policy at the Coalition for Nonprofit Housing and Community Development and was a fellow at Manna, Inc., an organization that works to help low and moderate income persons in the District become homeowners. Danielle holds a J.D. from The American University Washington College of Law where she was a student attorney at the school’s Community and Economic Development Law Clinic, and she holds a B.A. from Clark University in Worcester, MA where she majored in government and English. Some of Danielle’s favorite things in Ward One are Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park, the fantastic murals and the great coffee shops.  
Claudia Barahona, Constituent Services Director
Claudia Barahona was born and raised in Washington. Her parents emigrated from El Salvador to Washington D.C. in 1978 and they have lived in Ward One since 1985. Claudia graduated from Wilson Senior High School and she attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison. In 2008, her love and passion for community empowerment brought her back to Washington D.C., where she has been committed to working with youth in Ward 1 as an Inner City Outing Leader at the Parkview Recreation Center and a Project Director at the Latin American Youth Center. Having grown up Columbia Heights, Claudia looks forward to continuing her work with community members. Claudia is a fluent Spanish speaker.
Cherryl Bradley, Scheduler and Constituent Services Representative
A resident of Columbia Heights, Cherryl Bradley was born and raised in Washington where she grew up in the Stronghold neighborhood. Prior to joining Brianne’s team, Cherryl held previous positions with the District of Columbia Fire Department and District of Columbia Public Schools. Cherryl has more than 20 years of experience serving communities across the greater Washington metro area as a community activist, youth advocate, motivational speaker, and community program developer. Cherryl is a graduate of the District of Columbia Public Schools. She earned an M.S. in Education from Johns Hopkins University and a B.S. in Paralegal/Management from University of Maryland University College and also possesses certification as a computer specialist.

Maricela Nava, Administrative Assistant
Maricela Nava has a strong interest and passion in helping the Ward 1 community where she was born and raised. As a child she attended Harriet Tubman Elementary School, Lincoln Middle School, and Bell Multicultural High School where she graduated in 2008. Maricela also attended Trinity Washington University where she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. After obtaining her Bachelor’s Degree she decided to pursue her life-long dream to become a Cosmetologist, and she attended Flair Beauty Institute and obtained her Washington, D.C. Cosmetology license. Maricela is a fluent Spanish speaker.

Dear Neighbors:
 In my role as ANC Commissioner -Elect for  5E07, several persons have indicated to me  concern regarding construction at 1833 First St., NW.  This construction will convert that 2-story  rowhouse  for use as a 4 unit apartment building (with 1 unit per floor) .  I visited the site today, took photos,  spoke with a worker, but the construction manager reportedly was out of town for about a week.  I also   spoke with a BZA official and he noted DCRA had not made any referral for  a zoning exception or  variance..  Thus, although DCRA's database indicates that its staff had  flagged several potential  zoning problems (e.g., lot coverage, on-site parking spaces, blockage of open court), these were apparently resolved as no BZA referral was made.  I will be calling those DCRA staff  responsible for zoning reviews of  building applications and zoning compliance so that I might share with neighbors if and how identified zoning concerns were resolved, and DCR A's response to any other concerns  identified by neighbors.


Moderator comment: The property is zoned C-2-A and not R-4.

The Relationship Circle is about creating a community of mindful practice in the area of interpersonal relationships.  We endeavor to use our relationships themselves meditatively, as an avenue for personal transformation as well as creating more love, happiness, success and well-being in our lives.  We use self-inquiry to discover how we are the root of our experience and through an empathetic and powerful process, identify patterns and create new pathways for communication, action and relating to ourselves.  This can be a tremendously healing and empowering process.  For over three years, The Relationship Circle has supported people through finding new romantic relationships, creating success in their work and discovering a sense of wholeness that they experience in their everyday lives.

This month, we'll look at the head and the heart. What does it mean to come from head or heart in our relationships? What are we trying to accomplish? What are the challenges? Dear McMillan Park Supporters,

We are grateful for your efforts in 2014 in helping prevent the destruction and privatization of the endangered 25 acres of McMillan Park in Washington, DC. Created in 1906, McMillan Park was designed by the Olmsted firm and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Please make a year-end gift to the Save McMillan Park Legal Fund to enable critical legal actions coming up in 2015:
  • Zoning Appeal- The DC Zoning Commission recently approved the proposed re-zoning of McMillan Park for high-rise development. Friends of McMillan Park has party status in the matter. Once the Commission issues a Zoning Order, we will appeal the case in court. 
  • Opposition to Proposed Demolition- The DC Mayor’s Agent for Historic Preservation recently held hearings on the proposed demolition of McMillan Park’s historic underground structures. Friends of McMillan Park and the National Trust for Historic Preservation both have party status in the case. If the Mayor’s Agent issues an unfavorable ruling, we will appeal in court.
  • Government Waste Case against DC Council and Mayor- The DC Council and the Gray Administration used the holidays to rush through surplus and disposition resolutions for McMillan Park. This executive and legislative collusion to defraud the taxpayer deserves judicial review. 
Now more than ever, we need your support to help cover the costs of mounting these time-sensitive legal challenges. We would also greatly appreciate introductions to law firms that might be willing to help.

Please contribute however you can. Start by sharing this information with your friends and loved ones who might also take action.
