View this email in your browser Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project Florida Avenue NW Construction Site Newsletter July 9, 2020   Greetings Neighbors!   As part of the DC Water Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project, we would like to update you on some of the recent activities at the Florida Avenue Construction Site. We continue to evaluate our traffic calming and pedestrian safety measures near the construction site. Recently, new signage was added around the Florida Avenue construction impact zone to improve traffic and pedestrian safety.   Blinking Pedestrian Crosswalk Signs To promote additional pedestrian safety and traffic calming measures two sets of pedestrian activated blinking crosswalk signs were installed on Florida Avenue NW. One set was installed at the 2nd Street NW crosswalk and the other at the 3rd Street NW crosswalk. The signs are powered by a combination of solar and direct power.   Map 1: Blinking pedestrian crosswalk signs were installed at the Florida Avenue NW crosswalks located at 3rd Street NW and 2nd Street NW.   No Thru Trucks To discourage large hauling trucks from using streets and routes not approved by the NEBT project new No Thru Trucks Over 1 ¼ Ton signs have been posted on and near 4th Street NW: On New Jersey Avenue NW heading north before the 4th Street NW intersection above the existing speed limit sign On 4th Street near the New Jersey Avenue intersection On 4th Street near the Q Street NW intersection   Map 2: New No Thru Trucks Over 1 ¼ Ton signs posted on and near 4th Street NW.   Jet Grout Plant Removal In June, the silos located on the west side of the construction site next to the BP gas station were removed. The removal has increased the visibility of the surrounding businesses and homes.   The silos were a part of the jet grouting mill at the Florida Avenue NW Construction Site. Jet grouting is a process that involves injecting cement and water into the soil at a very high pressure to solidify and strengthen existing soft ground. The improved and stabilized ground allowed workers to safely excavate the drop shaft and diversion chamber, components of the diversion facility which will be connected to the Northeast Boundary Tunnel.   Image: Workers removing a jet grout mill silo from the Florida Avenue site for transportation to another NEBT construction site.   Project Details The Northeast Boundary Tunnel is the largest component of the Clean Rivers Project. It begins south of RFK Stadium and will extend north to Rhode Island Avenue, NE and west to 6th Street NW.
