Ascension Day

May 13, 2021

The Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, also known as Ascension Thursday or Ascension Day, commemorates the bodily ascension of Jesus into heaven. It is one of the seven major Anglican observances, and is one of the ecumenical feasts universally commemorated by almost all Christian churches. Ascension Day is traditionally celebrated on a Thursday, the fortieth day of Easter (from the account in Acts 1:3), though some churches move it to the following Sunday (7th Sunday of Easter).

The observance of this feast is an ancient tradition. At the beginning of the 5th century, St. Augustine says that it is of Apostolic origin and he speaks of it in such a way as to indicate that it was a universal observation of the church long before his time. Commemoration of this feast reminds us that before Jesus ascended into heaven, he reassured the disciples that this is necessary, and he leaves them, and us, with the promise of the Holy Spirit.

The three days before Ascension Thursday are sometimes referred to as Rogation days, meaning that they are days of prayer and fasting.

A Collect for the Feast of the Ascension

O Lord, when your Son ascended into heaven he sent down upon the Apostles the Holy Spirit, as he had promised, that they might comprehend the mysteries of the kingdom. Distribute among us also, we pray, the gifts of the selfsame Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen

Diocesan Confirmation

Congratulations to Anika Allen who was received into the Episcopal Church. Congratulations also to Constance Allen, Juanita Williams, and Lula Raye who confirmed or reaffirmed their baptismal vows May 1, 2021 at the Cathedral Amphitheater with the Rt. Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde.

St. George's Oral History Project

We are excited to announce that our Congregational Leadership Initiative (CLI) through the Episcopal Church Foundation (ECF) - St. George's Oral History - has received a $7,000 grant from the DC Humanities Council. We will be working hard over the next five months to conduct an oral history that is done right and done well in order to preserve our history contributing to our legacy.

Regathering News

Outdoor 7:30 Service: On Sunday, June 6, 2021 we will begin to hold an outdoor Eucharist. We will continue to wear masks and maintain social distancing. All are welcome.

Indoor Regathering: We are working with St. Luke's and Calvary to provide a date when we will regather in person. As you know we have grown into a shared community and we are prayerfully discerning how we continue in together in community even as we plan in the near future to worship in our own spaces.

Remembering Mott School

Do you remember the Mott School in LeDroit Park? Our group (from New Community Church in Shaw) would like to collect oral histories about the school -- people who went to the school, taught at the school, or who simply remember the Mott School's place in the neighborhood (maybe you have a parent who went there and have memories of what they told you about going there?). The stories of LeDroit Park and its history of segregation is so important for us to remember--please help us to record these stories for future generations! Please contact Aiyana Adams at (Funded by HumanitiesDC and supported by the DC Oral History Collaborative.)

Outreach: Serving the Community

Kwanzaa Kitchen: Janis has been able to come up with a unique way in which we will continue to feed the hungry in this important ministry. It involves fewer than 6 people and we will pack the food to go and place it outside on tables for people to take their breakfast with them. We will continue this way until we are able to gather groups together again.
