St. George's Episcopal Church

Sixth Sunday of Easter ~ May 9, 2021

160 U Street Washington DC 20001

This Parish of the Episcopal / Anglican Church was founded in 1930 as an Episcopal Church for African Americans. St. George's witnesses to the Gospel of Jesus Christ as expressed through the Anglican Tradition. We serve as a guiding light for our parishioners as well as the larger community.  We bid you welcome in the name of the Lord!

Priest-in-Charge: The Rev Marilyn Jenkins

Associate Priest: The Rev Yolanda Rolle

On this Mother’s Day, we give thanks to God for the divine gift of motherhood in all its diverse forms.

Let us pray for all the mothers among us today; for our own mothers, those living and those who have passed away; for the mothers who loved us and for those who fell short of loving us fully; for all who hope to be mothers some day and for those whose hope to have children has been frustrated; for all mothers who have lost children; for all women and men who have mothered others in any way—those who have been our substitute mothers and we who have done so for those in need; for the earth that bore us and provides our sustenance. We pray this all in the name of God, our great and loving Mother. Amen.

Regathering News

Outdoor 7:30 Service: On Sunday, June 6, 2021 we will begin to hold an outdoor Eucharist. We will continue to wear masks and maintain social distancing. All are welcome.

Indoor Regathering: We are working with St. Luke's and Calvary to provide a date when we will regather in person. As you know we have grown into a shared community and we are carefully discerning how we continue in together in community even as we plan in the near future to worship in our own spaces.

St. George's Oral History Project

We are excited to announce that our Congregational Leadership Initiative (CLI) through the Episcopal Church Foundation (ECF) - St. George's Oral History - has received a $7,000 grant from the DC Humanities Council. We will be working hard over the next five months to conduct an oral history that is done right and done well in order to preserve our history contributing to our legacy.

Remembering Mott School

Do you remember the Mott School in LeDroit Park? Our group (from New Community Church in Shaw) would like to collect oral histories about the school -- people who went to the school, taught at the school, or who simply remember the Mott School's place in the neighborhood (maybe you have a parent who went there and have memories of what they told you about going there?). The stories of LeDroit Park and its history of segregation is so important for us to remember--please help us to record these stories for future generations! Please contact Aiyana Adams at MottOralHistory@gmail.com. (Funded by HumanitiesDC and supported by the DC Oral History Collaborative.)

Outreach: Serving the Community

Kwanzaa Kitchen: Janis has been able to come up with a unique way in which we will continue to feed the hungry in this important ministry. It involves fewer than 6 people and we will pack the food to go and place it outside on tables for people to take their breakfast with them. We will continue this way until we are able to gather groups together again.
