bike theft attempt on Flagler Pl NW

See this Friday, 08/12/2011 message from a Flagler Place NW resident:

Just thought I`d pass along that someone tried to steal my bike today in broad daylight while it was locked to my front railing. I live on the south end of Flagler Place NW. I was home and heard some noise for about 10 minutes out front but thought nothing of it (there is a lot going on in front of our home, typically), then found my bike lock torn apart and apparently whacked-at by a blunt object. They didn`t manage to get the bike, though (insert Kryptonite brand plug here).

Just want to encourage people to be on the lookout for petty thieves since apparently they`re not even deterred by the sun and daytime passers-by. I`d also ask folks to consider intervening and/or calling the cops since, unfortunately, not everyone is on the up and up in our little slice of paradise.

? potential bikeshare station at 1st & R I Ave NW ? Cast your vote!

Please see below the message of DDOT on the possibility to have a Bikeshare station in Bloomingdale. As one of the proposed stations is first and rhode island, I hope that you can post the message on the Bloomingdale blog and ask the people who live in the Bloomingdale area to please advocate for one on the corner of Rhode Island and first, NW.

DC Department of Transportation (DDOT) has a map of proposed Bikeshare stations accessible via their website (http://ddot.dc.gov/DC/DDOT/On+Your+Street/Bicycles+and+Pedestrians/View+All/Bicycle+Sharing Under the section marked Expansion). DCers can advocate for one of the proposed stations by emailing comments to ddot.bikeshare@dc.gov.

A public meeting on future Bikeshare expansion is scheduled for Wednesday, May 25th from 6pm - 8 pm in room 1107 at 441 4th Street NW.

bicyclist struck by car near Big Bear Cafe last night

See this 4/8/2010 message from a W Street NW resident:

A friend of mine was hit by a car last night at First, R and Florida Streets NW on his bike ride home from work (basically in front of Big Bear Cafe). The driver hit him on purpose...road rage we suppose. My friend did not provoke him. The driver left the scene, and witnesses got a partial plate number. Please ask our neighbors to keep their eyes peeled for a black 2000ish VW Jetta with a sport rack on top with a colorful sticker on the rack. Its a Maryland plate that begins with 9FF. Police said if they catch this guy he will probably be charged with vehicular assault due to his aggressiveness. Fortunately my friend only has few bumps, bruises and scratches, however his bike took the worst of it: back wheel is destroyed, frame may be bent, and the seat was demolished.

This is a HUGE reminder to 1) WEAR A HELMET 2) cars will always win 3) the most important thing is to get home, not who is right or wrong in a bike/car conflict!
