Subject: [LeDroitPark] 'In Her Honor' - A Community Celebration March 25th
In Her Honor:
The Fourth Annual Celebration Of the Service Of Women In Pleasant Plains / Park View
The unique history of our center at 733 Euclid St. NW featured prominent women that housed and educated Black women and children since 1863. Today there are still many women committed to service work that often go unrecognized. With this in mind, In Her Honor will celebrate ECAC's ancestral connections to the National Association for the Relief of Destitute Colored Women and Children founded 151 years ago to rescue formerly enslaved people from the streets of Washington DC. We will also recognize six contemporary women who are dedicated to our community. This year’s honorees, nominated and selected through a community process, will be:
Shirikiana Aina, Film producer and manager of Sankofa Video & Books
Rev. Dr. Shirley B. Cooper, Pastor, Park Road Community Church
Maria Gomez, President, Mary’s Center
Tania Jackson, Community Development Consultant
Lori Kaplan, Director, Latin American Youth Center
Maria Tukeva, Principal, Columbia Heights Education Campus
We will also recognize one young woman who has demonstrated leadership in the community. This year’s young woman honoree will be LaDonna Smith, community organizer and tutor.
We hope you will support this landmark event to help further our mission to maintain a sustainable community center, affordable activities and empowered community members. You can find out more at www.ecacinherhonor.org .
