The Department of Public Safety is concerned about the safety of
you, your friends, and family during the eventful homecoming
period. We are offering some tips to stay safe while enjoying
this year’s activities!
Know your environment and become aware of
your surroundings.
Travel in a group with trusted friends
and designate a specific meeting place and time to meet up
should the group split up.
Always locate and be aware of your
nearest exits.
Wear comfortable shoes and clothing.
Be aware of the dangers and consequences
of heavy drinking.
Keep personal identification and credit
cards on your person to a minimum.
Secure cell phones and other electronic
devices when not in use.
Don’t leave anything visible in the
passenger area of vehicles, secure in trunk of car; do
this discreetly, out of the view of passersby.
Off Campus Housing and Community Engagement
Update
The
Office of Off Campus Housing and Community Engagement, or OCHCE,
has a Volunteer
Corps of approximately 75+ students. These
individuals represent a diverse group of students from various
classifications, majors, states and countries. Students volunteer
to provide support/assistance with project engagements to include
tutoring, mentoring, community beautification clean-ups,
food/treat distribution, soup kitchen support and assisting the
elderly. The HU Volunteer Corps is a service program for Howard
University students to interact with the community (internally
and externally) in a positive and intentional way. Our mission is
to build global service leaders who demonstrate a willingness to
uphold the University’s motto of “Truth and Service.” Bison Care…
Bison Serve. Some of the recent service engagements included:
AARP –
Preparing 1 Million Meals for Seniors - Students
volunteered to assist the AARP to prepare over 1 million
sandwiches for the elderly in a project held on the National
Mall.
Project
Homeless Connect – Students volunteered to
serve as a Project Homeless Connect (PHC) Buddy. The HU
volunteers supported United Way of the National Capital Area ‘s
(UWNCA) 4th Annual Project Homeless Connect held
at the DC Armory on Thursday, September 20. Howard University
volunteers escorted PHC participants to the various service
tables as they requested information for needed services (i.e.
housing, employment, food, mental and physical health
assistance/care, etc.).
HU Care
Cart – This is a cooperative initiative of
the Office of the President and Division of Student Affairs. The
aim of the initiative is to promote goodwill, care, and support
to the Howard University community. The HU Care Cart provides
free giveaways such as lanyards, Hilltops, pens, cups, water,
light refreshments and “anything Howard.” All items on the cart
are available to Bison, visitors and community members for FREE.
The HU Care Cart canvasses the University community, including
Howard University Hospital on a monthly basis and/or for special
occasions and events.
LeDroit Park House and Garden Tour – Sunday,
October 28, 1-5 pm
The LeDroit Park House and Garden Tour will
showcase the neighborhood’s unique architecture, history, and
diversity, from its time as an exclusive enclave, through its
heyday as a hub of DC’s African-American intelligentsia, to the
present day. Visitors will enjoy an exhibition of the interiors
and gardens of Victorian homes, rowhouses and contemporary
developments.
A $10 discount code is available for Civic Association members,
students, professors, staff and homecoming participants in the
hope that they will spend some time in LeDroit Park enjoying the
tour.
You are invited to attend District Bridges'
Annual Meeting coming up on Thursday, Oct. 18, 6-8pm, at the
District Bridges office (3400 11th St NW, #200). District
Bridges will be reporting on past and upcoming activities of
the Lower Georgia Ave (LGA) Main Street and Columbia Heights/Mount
Pleasant Main Street. The DC Main Streets program is
funded by the Dept. of Small and Local
Business Development to support community-based economic development. The
LGA Main Street is a great way to support local businesses and get
involved in neighborhoods near to Howard University.
