everyone,
Well, the fact that Americans can not go to France has one silver lining-- I
can finally get some of Garner's figs. Their figs have a short
season and they have always come and gone while I was away. And Jeff and I are
huge fig fans so this week I will get my fill of figs, if that is possible. In
France we often eat them stuffed with goat cheese, raw. Or quickly baked
in the oven, often drizzled with honey on top of the stuffed figs.
I
like the look of Nigel Slater's la Caramelized
Figs with pistachio mint yogurt. Here are some other
ideas for drying, drowning them in spirits, grilling them.
I am particularly excited by this runny, melted, gooey and figgy Baked
Feta and Figs appetizer using Swirly Girl Feta, of cofres, and Garner

wax peppers, shishito and mixed variety of bell peppers. Have you tried the
Cocozelle Italian heirloom zucchini. Nutty without many seeds. Basil,
parsley, scallions and garlic. Stir fry the green and red yard-long beans!
Ali says: We have been stuffing our lunchbox and roasters with soft cheese and
roating. Taste like candy.

cabbages, cukes, garlic. Stone ground grits and cornmeal, hot pepper jelly.
Hot sauces. Some herb plants. blackberries. New potatoes.basil. Melons!

Reids Orchard and
Winery: peaches and nectarines
are still with us, thank goodness.. Both yellow and white nectarines and
peaches, Castleton Plums, blackberries, seedless grapes and apples: honey crisp,
gala, macintosh, golden supreme, early fuji and jonamac. Hosui Asian pears.
Heirloom tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, bell peppers in all colors, new potatoes.
Plant some of their fresh herbs to keep you going through the Fall.
Swirly Girl Creamery: Have you tried MOOSTER with tomatoes? It is a very
flavorful aged Muenster style cheese and Jeff and I have been eating it every
day with various tomato salads. The Tommy Goat is made in a parmesan style.
Morbier is mixed milk marvel -- that caused a French diplomat to throw a basket
of Morbier at Market at another market. I love the feta with a tomato and
cucumber salad, in wraps and now baked with figs. It is a great condiment
cheese sprinkled on just about everything. Try the funkier Firetruck and
Cowttin. Firetruck is a salty grater and Cowttin is like a French triple cream.
Groff's Content: lots of beef cuts, sausages, pork, chicken this week for
your grill. And yes, they do have suckling pig.
King Mushrooms: Shiitake, maitake, cremini, portobello, exotic mix,
lion's mane, king trumpet, chestnut and oysters. In other words, lots of
choices.
