Hello Friends,

I want to personally thank Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) 5^th District Commander, Andrew Solberg, Patrol Section and Detectives for their continued efforts to make our city safe. As a result of their diligent work, officers were able to arrest the perpetrators of the recent burglaries that occurred in Ward 5.

I encourage all residents to join me and MPD on August 6th for Ward 5’s National Night Out. We can all play an important role in preventing crime in our neighborhoods by working with our officers and disseminating information to our neighbors. Ward 5 Highlights:

The Rhode Island Avenue Main Street Program Now Available

The Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD) is soliciting applications from qualified 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations that are incorporated in the District of Columbia to operate a D.C. Main Streets program for the Rhode Island Avenue, N.E. commercial corridor. The application for the program can be found here. The completed application should be an electronic document which applicants can email to Cristina Amoruso at cristina.amoruso@dc.gov.

Furthermore, there will be an information session for potential applicants on August 8, 2013, at 3 p.m. at DSLBD, located at 441 4th Street, N.W., Suite 970N. For more information on the Rhode Island Avenue Main Street program grant, click here.

The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development invites you to learn more about the newly launched Great Streets Small Business Capital Improvement Grant for funding up to $85,000. Celebrate National Night Out

Come out on Tuesday, August 6th for information about preventing crime in your neighborhood and meet members of the police department and fellow neighbors. Learn about Neighborhood Watch and also turn in your unused prescription medications at the handy drop-off. For more information, click here. Hope to see you there!

          
The District Expands the Free Summer Meals Program

This week, the Mayor’s office announced the expansion of the District’s Free Summer Meals Program to Saturdays. Starting on Saturday, July 27, 2013, free summer meals will be offered on Saturdays across the District at select Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and D.C. Public Library (DCPL) locations for children and youth up to 18 years of age.

No registration or application is necessary. Children or youth can simply show up at a free summer meals site during mealtime. Meals will be offered from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. DPR locations will offer Free Summer Meals every Saturday from July 27 through August 24. However, each DCPL location will have a different schedule.

The Ward 5 locations and schedules are as follows:

• DPR: Turkey Thicket Recreation Center, 1100 Michigan Avenue, N.E., (202) 576-9238
• DCPL: Woodridge Library, 1801 Hamlin Street, N.E., (202) 541-6226. Meals offered every Saturday except August 3

Volunteers Needed for the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington

On August 28, 2013 citizens from across the country will converge upon the District to commemorate and celebrate the historic March on Washington, which occurred 50 years ago on August 28, 1963. The Mayor’s Committee on the 50th Anniversary March on Washington is seeking volunteers. If interested, please contact Reginald Greer at reginaldwgreer@gmail.com or call 940-704-7692.

For those between the ages of 15 and 22, there will be a Youth Ambassador corps that will help to greet and host out of town visitors, helping them with directions and providing information about the overall event. All volunteers will receive special t-shirts and credentials.

                    

Consumer Fraud Alert - Sweepstakes Scammers Who Claim to Be DCRA Officials

Please be advised that individuals claiming to be working for “Consumer Affairs,” or “Consumer and Regulatory Affairs,” are contacting the elderly and otherwise vulnerable, claiming that they have won a sweepstakes or lottery, and then convincing their victims to send money in order to “secure their winnings.” THIS IS FRAUD.

Do not give these individuals any money or any information about yourself or your finances. If you receive such a phone call, hang up and contact your local FBI Office immediately. You may also contact the DCRA Office of Consumer Protection, at (202) 442-8930, or via email at Hamilton.Kuralt@dc.gov.

          
Reminder: AARP Age-Friendly City Survey
This summer the District will conduct a series of community conversations around the District. These are a great start to ensure that an Age-Friendly D.C. starts with and reflects the needs of District residents. Let the Mayor know what makes your neighborhood livable today, what is missing, and what you will need in order to age well in the District. Reminder: DCPS Beautification Day 2013
Beautification Day will be held this year on Saturday, August 24, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) event was established in 2005 as a citywide “spruce up” of all D.C. public school buildings in preparation for the first day of school. Beautification efforts will include landscaping, trash pick-up, light painting, planting flowers, and other external beautification efforts. Volunteers and supplies are needed at over 100 schools.
