Dear community members,

As you all know by now, the District of Columbia is expecting a severe winter storm this weekend. In preparation for the weather, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) would like to announce a couple of precautionary tips and provide information for additional resources during this time.

DO's:

* Please take this weather forecast seriously and dress appropriately for the weather when outside

* Start planning now for severe snow and dangerous road conditions and if possible, try to remain indoors

* Keep in mind that heavy traffic delays and road closures may be in effect, so be sure to check and follow our twitter page, @DCPoliceTraffic for the most up-to-date information

* Communicate with your neighbors about snow removal for shared sidewalks and property

* Sign up for AlertDC on the Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency's website at http://hsema.dc.gov/page/alertdc to receive emergency information sent straight to your phone

DON'T's:

* Park along snow emergency routes as your vehicle may be subject to a $250 fine, plus towing and impoundment fees - contact the Blue Plains Impoundment Lot at 202-541-6083 to locate a towed vehicle or dial 311

* Report minor traffic accidents by calling 911 if it involves minor property damage where no injuries are reported, and both vehicles are in drivable condition. Instead, exchange each other's insurance information and visit http://ddot.dc.gov/page/traffic-safety-crash-reports for further assistance

* Hesitate to call 911 for support, assistance, and especially emergencies, including for anyone you see who may be in danger or stuck outside

MPD is working with city partners and using a number of different resources to ensure public safety in the expected snow storm, including additional deployment of officers, and informing the public with updates as we proceed with weather-related developments. Please contact the following offices listed below for additional information about different programs related to snow and emergency weather.

* District Snow Team at www.snow.dc.gov> for Snow Safety Tips, DC Resident Snow Team, Neighborhood Shoveling Teams, Plan Today, Plow Tomorrow initiatives.

* Department of Public Works for information about the Sidewalk Shoveling Exemption Program, especially if you need an exemption for snow shoveling, at 202-727-792.

Thank you for your cooperation as the city diligently prepares for the expected snow storm. We continue to work in conjunction with our partners to ensure that we are prepared, and can maintain service for snow-related incidents. MPD will continue to monitor and update the community on traffic congestions and other severe weather-related events.__._,_.___
