Neighbors,
I am always encouraging residents to visit the Ward 5 Office at
the Wilson Building or to take an active role in your government
by testifying at a hearing. But I also know people have busy
lives and cannot always make it downtown, which is why my staff and
I hosted over 50 sessions.
During summer recess, we held more than 100 community office
hours at 40 different locations in 14 neighborhoods in Ward 5.
Twice a day, Monday through Thursday, we were out listening to
your concerns and answering your questions. We had a great time
meeting with neighbors at coffeeshops and restaurants, recreation
centers and Metro stations, and some of our great small
businesses.
Even as the D.C. Council is set to end its recess, myself and my
staff are here to help. If you are need help with government
services or have a question about pending legislation, you can
always call our office at (202) 724-8028 or email me at
kmcduffie@dccouncil.us. We look forward to continuing our
engagement with you.
In Service,
Kenyan

Isaac
Fulwood, Jr. - I was saddened to hear of the
passing of Former Metropolitan Police Chief Isaac "Ike"
Fulwood. Chief Fulwood led the Metropolitan Police Department at
a highly challenging time and continued to give back after his
MPD service ended through serving, and eventually chairing, the
U.S. Parole Commission and as an adjunct faculty at the University
of the District of Columbia. I extend my thoughts and prayers to
his family and friends and to those whose lives he touched.

Ruth
Odom Bonner - Many of you remember Ms.
Bonner when she joined President Barack Obama and First Lady
Michelle Obama to mark the dedication of the National Museum of
African American History and Culture. Her father was born into
servitude in Mississippi, before escaping and earning a medical
degree. Ms. Bonner was joined that day by four generations of her
family, which President Obama acknowledged by remarking that
their presence "reflects the arc of our progress." My
thoughts and prayers are with the Bonner family as they remember
their loved one, a national treasure.

Bill to Build Statues of Charles Hamilton Houston & Other
Diverse Washingtonian
This
bill, the Charles Hamilton Houston and Other
Diverse Washingtonians Commemorative Works Amendment Act of
2017, would erect statues in each of the D.C.'s
eight wards that highlight native Washingtonians who are women
and minorities. Furthermore, the legislation would make the inaugural
statue sponsored by the Council a memorial to honor Charles
Hamilton Houston, a native Washingtonian and graduate of Dunbar
High School. Houston led the law program at Howard University,
and then went on to serve as special counsel for the NAACP,
where he laid the legal foundation responsible for dismantling
the American system of segregation. [[D.C. Council Bill #

Hearing on
Proposed Legislation to Make Transportation Planning in D.C.
More Proactive
This
legislation, The Proper Planning for Future Growth
Amendment Act of 2017, will require the D.C.
Department of Transportation and the D.C. Office of Planning to
work together on a biennial report analyzing each ward's
current transportation infrastructure and future needs. While
individual projects perform traffic studies as part of their
analysis of development impacts and Small Area Plans look at
the traffic patterns within a prescribed area or neighborhood,
these approaches are often too narrow. This legislation will
broaden the outlook of transportation studies, and make this
process a regular occurrence rather than an ad hoc response to
a given development. [D.C. Council Bill # B22-0181]
