Greetings First Street Tunnel Stakeholder:

With this email we’re alerting you of four important matters regarding DC Water’s First Street Tunnel Project:

Continuation of the Shuttle Van Service — Based on discussions with community, DC Water has agreed to continue the shuttle van service for Alternative Parking Area (APA) tag holders. We appreciate the recent discussion at the Tunnel Forum and the personal appeals we have received from the community. Since ridership was low, the community and DC Water all worked together to maintain a needed service while reducing operational costs. The Project Team believes that keeping one van is a good compromise, since we are able to phase out the other van for lack of use.
DC Water, Skanska Jay Dee (SKJD), and Securemedy (who operates the shuttle and staffs the APA’s) thank you all for your input with this decision.

Saturday Work — In honor of the Easter Weekend, there will be no work this Saturday, April 4th. However, SKJD will resume construction activities on Saturday, April 11.  Keep in mind that Saturday work hours are from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.  Saturday work will occur as the contractor’s schedule of activities and the weather allows.

New Signage for the East Alleyway — Upon being notified of a series of traffic back-ups in the alley behind First Street, between U Street and V Street NW (immediately adjacent to Crispus Attucks Park), DC Water worked with SKJD and DDOT to ensure that new signage and traffic drums will be strategically installed to correct the issue(s). Six “STOP” signs and two “Children At Play” signs will be installed along the alleyway from U Street to W Street; and two orange traffic drums will be placed at both ends of the park to maintain a 10 foot driveway. This work will be completed as quickly as possible (contingent upon sign availability).

TBM Naming Ceremony — On Tuesday, April 14 at 11 a.m., the DC Water Authority will officially name the First Street Tunnel Boring Machine—the name was selected via a city-wide electronic public vote and will be revealed for the first time at the TBM Naming Ceremony. The event will take place at the First Street Tunnel Construction site on First Street between Michigan Avenue and Channing Street NW.
·         If you plan to walk, please walk up First Street and once you get to the Channing Street  intersection remain on First Street (west side sidewalk).  The event will take place on your left hand side

·         If you plan to drive, please enter the site on First Street NW from Michigan Avenue NW. From there, you will be directed to available parking areas in a lot or along First Street NW.

To confirm your attendance, please RSVP to event@dcwater.com by Friday, April 3. Please also indicate if you have any ADA needs or require other special assistance in attending the event.

As always, if you have any questions or would like more information about these issues or the project in general, please contact Tom Lindberg or Vickey Wilcher at 202.787.4738 or 202.787.4717 respectively.

For other construction related inquiries or to register a concern about the work, please call the FST
Hotline (844) FST–INFO/ (844) 378-4636.

We appreciate your patience as we move closer to our completion date. And we look forward to our continued work together.

NOTE: All visitors are required to wear appropriate footwear and clothing while visiting the site. Guests of the event are not permitted to wear open toed shoes of any form, sandals or high heeled dress shoes. Short pants or skirts are also not permitted. Please adhere to these precautionary measures to prevent injury while on this active construction site.

Regards,
Tom
