Congrats to MPD 5D for making an arrest last week related to the package thefts that have been plaguing the 200 block of Florida Avenue, NW for many months! Over the last several months, MPD has been working with residents in the ANC 5E06 and 5E07 Single Member Districts (including the 200 block of Florida Avenue, NW) to curtail package thefts. This arrest was the result of a targeted operation by MPD's Street Crimes Unit. The defendant has a history of arrests for a wide variety of crimes including thefts. It is not yet known whether the suspect is connected to other package thefts in our area. MPD Officers made a presentation to the Bloomingdale Civic Association about package thefts in our area last month so this arrest is quite timely. There have been recent incidents of package thefts throughout the neighborhood and Commissioner Pearl, John Salatti and several other concerned neighbors have been working with MPD and USPS to address the same issue in Bloomingdale north of Rhode Island. Last year Commissioner Foster and our neighbor Sharon Burns, BCA Public Safety Committee Chair, alerted MPD to a package theft in progress. Their swift action and collaboration with MPD led to an arrest and the recovery of several stolen packages.
I am confident that MPD, Bloomingdale ANC Commissioners and neighbors will continue to work together to resolve this problem. If you suspect a package has been stolen please be sure to notify MPD and whichever service delivered the package as soon as possible.
