Subject: Transition of long-term Bloomingdale resident Mrs. Pauline Young
I am saddened to report that Mrs. Young, my neighbor, and a resident of the unit block of Rhode Island, NW for more than 50 years, made her transition peacefully last week at 95 years of age.

Her death was occasioned by her decision to cease dialysis treatment.  Her funeral is today (Thursday) at 10 am at her beloved Florida Avenue Baptist Church (9th & Florida, NW).

Mrs. Young was an active contributor to the Bloomingdale community.  Last year she agreed to participate in the  BCA Bloomingdale Village Square Project's oral histories project.  Some of her most poignant memories are captured throughout portions of the project's 'presentation' video, which is available for viewing at

Her children constantly surrounded and cared for her during her declining health.  As one of her sons observed, "She lived so long not so much because she wanted to, but because she knew we wanted her to ".  Only upon deciding that she would terminate dialysis was she moved from her Rhode Island Avenue home to a hospice.

Hers was a life well and decisively lived.

May Mrs. Young rest in peace.
