Emancipation Month Tour of Historic Bloomingdale

Saturday, April 29, 2017
12:30-2:00pm
Tour is Free; Space is Limited
Advance Registration is Required

Join the DC Preservation League for a walking tour of the Bloomingdale neighborhood as part of the city’s many Emancipation Day celebrations throughout April. Bloomingdale is located in northwest DC, about two miles from the U.S. Capitol and was heavily developed by Harry Wardman. This tour, led by Sarah Shoenfeld, will explore the history of race relations in Bloomingdale through architecture and development, specifically the influence of racially restrictive deed covenants which kept much of the neighborhood off-limits to African Americans until the 1940s.

Sarah Shoenfeld is a historian and works with the Mapping Segregation project of Prologue DC. Mapping Segregation documents the historic segregation of DC’s housing, schools, playgrounds and other public spaces. We encourage attendees to explore
this story map before the tour. The story map is smartphone friendly and we encourage you to continue using it during the tour, too!
