Below are updates on the District's response to the coronavirus pandemic. For the latest and most comprehensive information always visit http://coronavirus.dc.gov.

DC Moves Closer to Phased Reopening

Today, DC marked the 13th day of decline in community spread of COVID-19 in DC, meaning tomorrow we could hit the milestone of 14 days laid out by public health officials.

Mayor Bowser and DC Health Director Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt will be providing an update on phase one of reopening at her daily briefing tomorrow at 11:00 AM (those briefings can be viewed on DC cable channel 16, the Mayor's Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube feeds, or on the web). Barring any spikes, DC could begin a phased reopening this Friday, May 29.

New Walk-Up Testing Site Downtown

DC is moving the location of its testing site currently located at United Medical Center. As of June 1, that testing site will be relocated to 2241 Martin Luther King Jr Avenue, SE. Additionally, DC is adding a new walk-up testing site at 5th St NW between F & G Streets NW.

PPE Supplies Available for Small Businesses Looking to Reopen

Are you a Ward 5 small business in need of supplies to reopen? The DC Department of Small and Local Business Development is distributing supplies like hand sanitizer, masks, and cleaning supplies to small businesses through business improvement districts and main street organizations.

In Ward 5, small businesses located within the boundaries of Bladensburg Road Main Street or Rhode Island Avenue NE Main Street,* or in Brookland/Edgewood (12th St NE or 8th St NE areas or nearby) should fill out this form. They have gloves, masks, bleach, and hand sanitizer available for distribution. The linked form helps them assess who needs what.

(*Not sure of the boundaries? Rhode Island Ave NE Main Street runs from 3rd St NE to Eastern Avenue, and Bladensburg Road Main Street is from Mount Olivet Road up to Eastern Avenue, with each Main Street sometimes veering off the main road by a couple of blocks. Enter your business address in the DC Main Streets map to look it up for sure.)

Pilot Program for Retailers in Certain Sectors Expands

The program grants waivers to local bookstores, music and card shops, florists, sundries, and beauty supply stores retail shops to do curbside and front door pickup. All sales are advance purchases (pre-ordered online or by phone) only. The stores will need to agree to share data and information with DC about their operations. The goal with this pilot is to learn important lessons about reopening while ensuring safe operations. Learn more and apply today.

Today is the Last Day to Request a Mail-In Ballot

The deadline to request a mail in ballot for the June 2 Primary Election is TODAY, Tuesday, May 26. If you submitted your request by mail, your application must be post-marked on May 26, 2020. (NOTE: this applies to your ballot request, you do NOT have to return your mail-in ballot by May 26)

To request a mail-in ballot online, click here: https://dcboe.org/Request-Your-Ballot-by-Mail

Today 22 voting centers opened across DC and they remain open from 8:30am - 7pm every day (except Memorial Day) until June 2. In Ward 5, our voting centers are Turkey Thicket and McKinley Tech. Trinidad, Carver, and Langston residents may prefer the Sherwood Rec in Ward 6 at 10th and G St NE.

Small Business Spotlight: Saya Salteña

The Washington City Paper featured Saya Salteña, a Bolivian food vendor operating out of Mess Hall in Edgewood that serves Salteñas, a signature Bolivian snack.

Freshly baked salteñas are available through delivery via Uber Eats, Door Dash, and DC To-GoGo. Customers can also order fresh or frozen salteñas directly from the Saya Salteña website. Pick-up is available at Mess Hall.
