DC Moves Closer to Milestones Which Allow Reopening



The chart above outlines the four criteria which will dictate our reopening, and where DC stands today on progress toward those milestones. We have sustained 12 days of decrease in community spread, moving us closer to the 14 days we need to satisfy the metric. The mayor has said she will provide an update on stage one of reopening on Tuesday, May 26.


ReOpen DC Advisory Group Reports



The ReOpen DC Advisory Group, upon which Councilmember McDuffie served as Co-Chair of the Committee on Equity and Vulnerable Populations, issued its first report on Thursday, May 21 outlining a framework for phased reopening of DC. Additionally, the District published a "before you open checklist" to allow businesses to begin to prepare to for a phased resumption of .operations


Additional Details Presented on Summer and School Plans



Today, the Mayor provided the following updates on summer activities and schools:
  • DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) will not offer in-person camp to begin the summer and possibly not all summer. DPR will be offering Camp-at-Home at no cost for all District families, including a range of activities. If we are able to enter phase 2 of the reopening, there is potential for limited, outdoor camps to resume later in the summer.
  • The Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program is going virtual! MBSYEP will work to place young people doing work such as literacy support for young learners, tech/IT, and occupational skills training. Organizations that would like to partner with the Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program can go to summerjobs.dc.gov.
  • DC Public Schools (DCPS) will offer virtual summer school from June 22 - July 24.
  • The Class of 2020 will be celebrated in virtual graduation ceremonies to take place in June.
  • The first day of DCPS this fall - virtual or otherwise - will be Aug 31, 2020.


Announcing Grants for Non-Profits to Help with COVID



DC HOPE Community Grants will provide up to $50,000 for 501(c)3 non-profits that support relief efforts in a number of ways:
  • Increasing buy-in and participation in disease
  • investigation/contact tracing process
  • Purchase and distribution of PPE
  • Social distancing protective measures
  • Public health awareness
  • Connecting residents to testing sites and health care providers
Applications will open on Tuesday, May 26, and the submission deadline is Tuesday, June 9, by 5:00 pm.


Request a Mail-In Ballot by May 26 or Early Vote NOW



As of this week, Ward 5 is 6th out of 8 wards in mail in ballot requests, let's turn this around! Today was the first day of early voting.

Today 22 voting centers opened across DC and they remain open from 8:30am - 7pm every day (except Memorial Day) until June 2. In Ward 5, our voting centers are Turkey Thicket and McKinley Tech. Trinidad, Carver, and Langston residents may prefer the Sherwood Rec in Ward 6 at 10th and G St NE.

You can still request a mail-in ballot, but the DEADLINE TO REQUEST A MAIL-IN BALLOT is this TUESDAY, MAY 26! If you submitted your request by mail, your application must be post-marked on May 26, 2020. (NOTE: this applies to your ballot request, you do NOT have to return your mail-in ballot by May 26)
