Convention Center Opened as Alternative Care Facility

Today, local and federal officials unveiled the conversion of the Walter E. Convention Center into an alternate care site to support the District’s coronavirus (COVID-19) medical surge response.

As the Mayor has continually stated, “Our hope is that... we never get to the point of needing to use this site. But if we end up needing additional hospital capacity, these beds are here and ready for patients,”

The Convention Center’s Hall A, through the coordination of more than a dozen local and federal agencies, can now accommodate 437 beds and is ready to accept 100 patients this week.

DC Budget Release Delayed

Tomorrow's planned transmittal of the Mayor's draft budget has been delayed until next Monday, May 18. Due to the delay, the Council hearings previously scheduled for May 14, May 15, and May 18 will be rescheduled, including Councilmember McDuffie's Committee on Business and Economic Development hearing previously scheduled for Thursday, May 14. New dates and times for those hearings will be published shortly.

Committee budget hearings will now take place May 20 - June 16, followed by committee mark-ups on June 23, 24, and 25. The final votes on the budget before the entire Council have been pushed back a week but are still scheduled to take place in July.
