Neighbors,

In light of the recent tragedy in Princess Anne, Md, where a man and his seven children were found dead from Carbon Monoxide poisoning, I thought now would a good time to just go over a few Carbon Monoxide basics. Most of this information, you can find on the Environmental Protection Agency’s and Center For Disease Control’s websites.

What is Carbon Monoxide (CO)?
- Carbon Monoxide is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that can be found in fumes given off anytime gas from an appliance is burned.

What are the most common sources of CO?
- Improperly ventilated gas space heaters
- Gas appliances, such as water heaters and stoves
- Gas fireplaces
- Automobile exhaust from attached garages
- Gasoline powered equipment, such as generators (which should never be operated inside)
- Tobacco smoke

CO poisoning can occur when these various gas sources are not properly installed or properly ventilated, and the fumes are inhaled.

If you have any of these gas sources listed, please make it a point to have at the very least, one working Carbon Monoxide detector or Carbon Monoxide communicator in your home. A good rule of thumb is to have at least one detector/communicator on each level of the home where a gas source is located.

For more information on CO and CO poisoning, including symptoms and prevention, please check out, among other sources, the CDC’s and EPA’s links on Carbon Monoxide.

If you have questions regarding ADT’s monitored Carbon Monoxide communicators, or any other home safety and security questions, please contact me directly.

Thank you and Let’s Keep Each Other Safe!
