Subject: Ward 5 Report: International Women's Day
|
Neighbors,
Today is International Women's Day, an annual commemoration of the
movement for women's rights. It is a day to both recognize the many
accomplishments of women in society but also acknowledge that,
despite progress, women still face discrimination and unequal
treatment in our society.
On the D.C. Council, I have stood up for women's rights. I am proud
to have supported the measure to ensure that regardless of any
changes to the Affordable Care Act, insurance providers in the
District of Columbia will not be allowed to charge women additional
fees for preventative women's health services such as contraception
and breast cancer screening and counseling. In response to the
District's unconscionably high maternal mortality rate, I
co-introduced a bill that creates a task force to review the matter
and provide policy recommendations to address this serious issue. I
championed and passed our local Title IX bill, which ensures we
have the data to make informed policy decisions about girls
participation in sports. And last year I introduced a bill to build
eight statues of Native Washingtonians who are women or people of
color, because it is important that our young girls see themselves
in the icons we honor.
We are standing up in the District and I am heartened by the
emerging national and international movement to ensure women are
treated equally. There is no question that we have work to do. But
there are also reasons to be optimistic that our grandmothers,
mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, and women in our lives will
face fewer barriers and achieve even more than the women who came
before them.
In Service,
Kenyan
