Right Proper Brew Pub is one step closer to opening

Right Proper, the forthcoming Shaw brewpub run by brewer Nathan Zeender, Rocklands founder John Snedden and former Brasserie Beck general manager/beer director Thor Cheston, officially applied for its liquor license on Friday.

          

“Things are moving ahead smoothly, surprisingly,” Cheston says. “We expect our building permits to come in in a few weeks. We’re on schedule to open in October.”

The brewpub, which will be located at 624 T St. NW has an official capacity of 115. The owners told the Food section’s Daniel Fromson Right Proper will specialize in Belgian-inspired farmhouse ales and aged sour beers.

This is a busy year for D.C. brewpubs. Gordon Biersch opened at the Navy Yard on April 1, and Bluejacket, from the team behind ChurchKey, plans to open in the same neighborhood in late summer. The onetime Arlington staple Bardo is plotting a comeback on Bladensburg Rd. NE, a few blocks north of H Street.

All this activity flies in the face of recent history. Between 2001 and 2012, Washington lost three of its five brewpubs: John Harvard’s and the Capitol City Brewing Company at Union Station closed, and the Cap City location at 11th and H Street NW got rid of all its brewing equipment. (Its beer is now produced at the Capitol City Brewing Company in Shirlington.)
