Councilmember McDuffie Visits Seniors in the Fort Lincoln Community
This week, Councilmember McDuffie dropped by several seniors’ facilities in the Fort Lincoln community. As a member of the Committee on Workforce and Community Affairs, Councilmember McDuffie is a strong advocate for and ally of the District’s seniors. Celebrating the Class of 2013
The school year is wrapping up, commencement season is upon us, and it is time to celebrate our high school seniors. While graduating from high school is the conclusion to a very important phase of their lives, it is just the beginning. This week, Councilmember McDuffie attended the Paul Laurence Dunbar Senior High School graduation and provided the students with some inspirational advice.
“Class of 2013, be bold,” Councilmember McDuffie stated during the graduation at Howard University’s Cramton Auditorium. “I challenge all of you not to rest on your achievements, but continue to strive towards your dreams.”
The 2013 Class was the last class to graduate from the current Dunbar building; the new school is slated to be completed later this summer. Councilmember McDuffie would like to congratulate all of the Ward 5 high school seniors on completing high school and wish them continued success in their endeavors.
Ward 5 Pride!
Last week, Councilmember McDuffie and the Ward 5 team came together to participate in the annual D.C. Capital Pride Parade and to show their support for D.C.’s LGBTQ community.
“Capital Pride is a wonderful event that I look forward to participating in every year,” said Councilmember McDuffie. “I was truly humbled by this year’s turnout from Ward 5 residents. We came together from a variety of neighborhoods to demonstrate the diversity that exists in Ward 5 and around our great city.” Click here to see additional pictures from the parade.
Councilmember McDuffie to Host a Crime and Safety Forum
On June 20th, Councilmember McDuffie, along with the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), and community stakeholders will host a public safety and crime forum to hear what steps MPD is taking to ensure the safety of Ward 5 residents and to discuss crime prevention strategies. The forum will be held at the Israel Baptist Church, located at 1251 Saratoga Avenue, NE, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Parking available in the church’s rear parking lot.
Reminder: Ward 5 Nats Night Out
Baseball Season is here! A trip to the ballpark is the perfect way to spend a summer afternoon. Please join Councilmember McDuffie for the Second Annual Ward 5 NATS NIGHT OUT taking place at Nationals Ball Park on Sunday, July 7th, beginning at 1:35 p.m.

Reminder: Councilmember McDuffie Invites Residents to His State of the Ward Address
To celebrate his first year in office, Councilmember McDuffie invites all Ward 5 residents to join him on Tuesday, June 25th, for his State of the Ward Address. The event will be an opportunity for the community to come together to reflect on the many accomplishments we have seen throughout Ward 5, as well as a chance for Councilmember McDuffie to outline his vision for the future of the Ward. The State of the Ward Address will be held at Luke C. Moore High School, located at 1001 Monroe Street, NE, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Parking will be available in the school’s parking lot or residents can utilize on-street parking. Residents may also use the Brookland Metro Station. We hope to see you there!
Brentwood Community Walk-Through
Councilmember McDuffie will hold a community walk-through with the Metropolitan Police Department, Department of Parks and Recreation, Department of Transportation, Department of Public Works and Department of General Services in the Brentwood community. The purpose of the walk-through is to address a number of quality of life issues that have been brought to Councilmember McDuffie’s attention in recent weeks, such as public safety, cleanliness of the neighborhood and overall care of the Brentwood Recreation Center. Legislative Update:
On June 17, Councilmember McDuffie, Chairperson of the Committee on Government Operations and Councilmember Muriel Bowser, Chairperson of the Committee on Economic Development will hold a joint public roundtable on the Webb School Surplus. The hearing will be to discuss the measures to declare the Webb School as surplus and authorize, on an emergency basis, the District to enter into a new ground lease with KIPP DC.
The hearing will be taking place at 9:30 a.m. in Room 500 of John A. Wilson Building, located at 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W. For more information on the roundtable, click here.

DCRA to Host Small Business Restaurant Symposium Expo
The Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) will hold a half-day workshop on opening and operating a restaurant in the District of Columbia on Monday, June 17th, from 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Kellogg Conference Center, Gallaudet University located at 800 Florida Avenue, N.W.

DPR and OP Announce the Parks and Recreation Master Plan for the District
The D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and the D.C. Office of Planning (OP), in collaboration with consulting firm AECOM, announced a new city-wide initiative titled "The Parks and Recreation Master Plan" for the District of Columbia. DPR, OP and AECOM have been working together with thirty additional government, community and private sector organizations to develop the beginning phase of the District's Parks and Recreation Master Plan. This plan will guide a new, bold and strategic vision for advancing the District's parks and recreation resources and help District residents, workers and visitors Move, Grow, and Be Green.
The Parks and Recreation Master Plan project team is interested in hearing residents' ideas on the District's overall parks system, including what is working well, areas that could use improvement, and large-scale ideas to be considered for implementation over the next ten years.
Listed below are the dates for the first three scheduled public workshop dates to introduce the Master Plan project to District Residents and gain their input through a series of interactive exercises:
