TRAFFIC ADVISORY
DC Water Construction at North Capitol Street and Michigan Avenue NW begins June 2013
DC Water Construction at McMillan Sand Filtration Plant
(Washington, DC) – DC Water in coordination with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), is set to begin construction at the McMillan Sand Filtration Plant as part of the DC Water Northeast Boundary Neighborhood Protection Project to mitigate flooding in the Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park area.
Construction for the McMillan Storm Storage Project will take place on North Capitol Street and First Street NW from Channing Street NW to Michigan Avenue NW beginning June 2013 through March 2014. The work will be performed Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7:00pm until 5:00am.
Impacts
Traffic impacts will include the following from June 2013 until March 2014:
· Lane closure on North Capitol Street from Girard Street, NW to Michigan Avenue, NW – north and southbound lanes.
· Lane closure on First Street NW from Michigan Avenue NW to Channing Street, NW.
· Median removal on North Capitol Street between Michigan Avenue, NW and Channing Street, NW. This removal will result in a lane shift along this stretch of the roadway.
· Detour traffic signs have been posted throughout the area to alert motorists of the upcoming lane closure and traffic detours.
Project Details
Crews will construct underground structures to divert up to 6 million gallons of storm water into temporary holding tanks at the McMillan Sand Filtration Plant during intense rainstorms. After the passing of these rainstorms, the stored rain water will be sent to the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plan for treatment.
